Tutorial: Jailbreak iPhone 3.1.2 with BlackRa1n RC3

Ealier today, GeoHot unveiled BlackRa1n RC3, his latest jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.1.2. BlackRa1n RC3 is very similar to RC1 and RC2. The difference is that RC3 includes BlackSn0w, the unlock for iPhone baseband 05.11.07.

This step by steps guide and tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone OS 3.1.2 with BlackRa1n RC3. The steps are strictly identical to BlackRa1n RC1 and BlackRa1n RC2 but I figured it might be good to write a tutorial for novices.

This BlackRa1n RC3 iPhone jailbreak tutorial will work on both Mac and PC. If you already jailbroke your iPhone using BlackRa1n RC1 or RC2, there is no need for you to run BlackRa1n again.

How to jailbreak iPhone firmware 3.1.2 with BlackRa1n RC3:

Step 1: Update iTunes to the latest version available and reboot your computer. If your iPhone is not running OS 3.1.2, update your iPhone to firmware 3.1.2 in iTunes.

Step 2: Download BlackRa1n RC3 from our iPhone Downloads page.

Step 3: Plug your iPhone to your computer and make sure iTunes is closed. Run BlackRa1n RC3 and click on "make it ra1n".

Step 4: Your iPhone will enter recovery mode and you will see the usual recovery image replaced by a picture of GeoHot.

Step 5: BlackRa1n will run on your iPhone and it will reboot when done.

Step 6: A message will show up asking to donate. If your jailbreak is successful, I think it's the right thing to do to donate $5 or more. It's a good way to keep GeoHot motivated.

Step 7: After your iPhone has rebooted, you will notice a new BlackRa1n icon on your springboard. Make sure you have an internet connection and launch BlackRa1n.app on your iPhone.

Step 8: You will now have the option to install Cydia, Rock, or both if you choose to, then tap "install". You will also notice that Icy is gone and it's been replaced by "sn0w". Run "sn0w" only if you want to unlock your iPhone.

Step 9: Once the packages are installed, your iPhone will respring and you should see Cydia (and Rock if you chose it) on your springboard.

Step 10: Once Cydia and/or Rock are installed on your springboard, you can now uninstall BlackRa1n from your iPhone. Uninstalling BlackRa1n will obviously not remove the jailbreak. It will simply remove the BlackRa1n.app that was used to install the packages. To do so, simply launch the BlackRa1n.app and select "uninstall BlackRa1n".

Step 11: After uninstalling BlackRa1n, I suggest you reboot your iPhone.

Done!

The whole process shouldn't take more than 10 minutes. It definitely is an easy jailbreak.

Tutorial: Jailbreak Your iPhone With BlackRa1n RC2

GeoHot came up yesterday with an updated version of BlackRa1n called BlackRa1n RC2. This new release supposedly fixes a bunch of issues that some of you may have encountered, especially while trying to jailbreak an iPhone 3G.

This step-by-step guide and tutorial will show you how to use BlackRa1n RC2 to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod Touch, either on a Mac or a PC. This works for all iDevices, except for the iPod Touch 3G. This tutorial was made using an iPhone 3GS but again, it should work on all devices except the iPT3G.

I already wrote a BlackRa1n tutorial and the steps are identical but a few people emailed me or tweeted me asking to write a tutorial for BlackRa1n RC2.

Before we start, you have to understand that BlackRa1n is a jailbreak and jailbreak only. BlackRa1n will not unlock your iPhone. As a matter of fact, if you want to unlock your iPhone, do not use BlackRa1n as it will update the baseband and make it impossible to unlock for the time being.

If you want to unlock your iPhone, I suggest you use PwnageTool. PwnageTool will help you create a custom IPSW that won't update your baseband, thus allow you to unlock using UltraSn0w.

After jailbreaking using BlackRa1n, you may be facing an issue where you can't access the root folder of your iPhone using tools such as iFunBox, DiskAid, and iPhoneBrowser. Some users also report issues when using WinterBoard. I said it and I'll say it again, BlackRa1n is crappy. If you have the option, I recommend using PwnageTool instead. It is a much more reliable and stable jailbreak than BlackRa1n.

The problem comes from the fact that BlackRa1n doesn’t add the afc2 support to your iPhone that is necessary for iPhoneBrowser, iFunBox, and DiskAid to access the file system and allow the transfer of files such as Winterboard themes, NES ROMs, etc... to the iPhone. In other words, you can’t access the root partition of your drive.

To fix this annoying issue, simply install the afc2add patch from Cydia then reboot your iPhone. Done!

Jailbreak and Unlock iPhone 2G 3.1.2 Using PwnageTool

A few weeks ago, I wrote a step-by-step guide and tutorial that shows you how to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 2G 3.1 using PwnageTool for Mac OS X. I could very well rewrite this tutorial again and call it "jailbreak and unlock your iPhone 2G 3.1.2 with PwnageTool" but that would be a waste of time as the steps are identical.

I suggest you check out this tutorial and follow the steps over there. The only thing that will change is that instead of using the firmware 3.1, you will have to use firmware 3.1.2 (iPhone1,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw). Everything else is exactly the same.

Jailbreak iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 with PwnageTool

This step-by-step guide and tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G or 3GS OS 3.1.2 using PwnageTool 3.1.4 for Mac OS X. PwnageTool is a Mac and Mac only tool. There is no equivalent for Windows and no one knows yet when such a tool for Windows will be released.

If you updated your iPhone via iTunes to 3.1.2 or if you bought your iPhone with 3.1.2 pre-installed, you will be able to jailbreak it, however, you will not be able to unlock it. On the other hand. if you are still on 3.0 or if you have updated to 3.1 using PwnageTool, you preserved your baseband and you will be able to unlock using UltraSn0w.

This tutorial is written for both the iPhone 3G and 3GS. The steps are identical. The only thing that changes is the file you have to download in order to create your custom IPSW.

This step-by-step guide/tutorial will show you how to jailbreak your iPhone using BlackRa1n, the latest jailbreak tool by GeoHot. This BlackRa1n tutorial is for Windows and Mac. Note that this tutorial was written for a PC but the steps are identical for Mac.

Before we get started, I highly suggest you read this post I wrote earlier today. There are a few requirements and restrictions about BlackRa1n and it is very important you read and understand them all.

BlackRa1n will not unlock your iPhone. Also you should not update to 3.1.2 if you want to be able to unlock. If that's your case, you will have to wait for the Dev Team to update PwnageTool.

This tutorial was written for an iPhone 3GS but the process is exactly the same for all iPhones and all iPod Touch.

How to Jailbreak iPod Touch 2G 3.1.1

A few days ago was the release of the iPod Touch 2G jailbreak for 3.1.1 (as well as other devices). There is a bit of confusion because the Dev Team's blog post says you must be pwned before jailbreaking. I'm sure a lot of people (like me) demonstrated the sad smiley to perfection when they read this. Luckily, there is a way to jailbreak it.

You'll need the 3.0 firmware, RedSn0w, 3.1.1 firmware, and the latest PwnageTool. All these are available from the download page.

How to Unlock iPhone 3GS 3.1

This step-by-step guide and tutorial will show you how to unlock your iPhone 3GS running OS 3.1 using UltraSn0w. This is a very simple method that requires only a few steps.

Step 1: You have to jailbreak your iPhone 3GS by following one of these tutorials.

Step 2: Once jailbroken, follow these steps:

Launch Cydia. Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com (note there is a “0″ in sn0w, not an “o”). After installing this source in Cydia, search for “ultraSn0w”. Install UltraSn0w and reboot your iPhone.

Tha'ts as simple as that!

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS 3.1 PwnageTool Tutorial

This tutorial is a step-by-step guide that will show you how to jailbreak OS 3.1 for your iPhone 3GS using PwnageTool for Mac OS X.

PwnageTool will be used to create a custom firmware (also called custom IPSW). After creating the custom firmware, we will restore your iPhone 3GS in iTunes using this firmware. A custom IPSW is needed in order to avoid updating the baseband, which would render any software unlock impossible, at least for the time being.

Please read the next 2 notes over and over and over again... Seriously, please make sure you read and understand the following:

Note 1: PwnageTool does not support the 3GS out of the box. If your iPhone 3GS has 3.1 preinstalled and is not Pwned then there is no tested jailbreak solution at the moment. In other words, if you are on a pwned version of 3.0 or 3.0.1 (either using PwnageTool, RedSn0w, or PurpleRa1n), then you are fine; just follow this tutorial. If you updated to 3.1, you will have to wait for another method. We don't know when this other method will be available.

Note 2: there is no Windows version at the moment. We have no indication about when a Windows jailbreak will be available.

How to Downgrade iPhone 3.1 Baseband From 05.11.07 to 04.26.08

Every time there is a new firmware coming out, updating puts you at risk of updating your baseband as well, making it impossible to unlock your iPhone. This time is no different than the others and many people accidentally updated their iPhone to firmware 3.1, updating their baseband to 05.11.07 at the same time.

Fortunately, there is an easy way for iPhone 3G users to downgrade their baseband from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08. Note that this is for iPhone 3G users only. If you have an iPhone 3GS, then read my article on how to downgrade the iPhone 3GS firmware from 3.1 to 3.0.

Note that this trick only works on iPhones that have the 05.08 (5.8) bootloader from the factory, which is just a very limited amounts of iPhone 3G that were released in the first few weeks of the production cycle. If you don't know your bootloader version, you may run Fuzzyband and it will tell you what version you have and whether or not you can downgrade your baseband.

1. First, your iPhone 3G has to be jailbroken. For more information, read my iPhone 3.1 jailbreak article.

2. Launch Cydia and search for the Fuzzyband app. Install it and reboot your iPhone.

3. Launch the Fuzzyband app and tap "downgrade" to start downgrading your baseband from 05.11.07 to 04.26.08.

4. Reboot your iPhone. You should now be on baseband 04.26.08 and be able to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone using UltraSn0w.

How to Enable MMS on iPhone OS 3.0 or 3.0.1

Those of you on a 3.0 or 3.0.1 jailbroken iPhone who were anticipating the iPhone MMS release last week might have been disappointed by the fact that you have to be on the latest 3.1 firmware to download and install the carrier update. Rejoice because there is a simple hack that will allow you to have MMS on your iPhone.

1. First, download the AT&T Profile .IPCC 5.5.

2. Make sure iTunes is closed and run one of these commands, depending on your operating system:

On Windows: Note that it took me a few minutes to get this to work... It seems I was always typing something wrong.

Windows XP: Go to "Start", click on "Run" and type "cmd" then hit Enter. Now type the following: cd C:\Program Files\iTunes\ and hit ENTER then type iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit ENTER Windows Vista: Go to “Start” and type “Command Prompt” in search and then hit ENTER. Now type the following: cd C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\ and hit ENTER then type: iTunes.exe /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1 and hit ENTER

On Mac OS X:

Open Terminal by going to Applications > Utilities. Type the following: defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE and hit ENTER.

3. Launch iTunes and plug your iPhone. PC users should hold the SHIFT key on their keyboard (Mac users should hold the ALT key) and click on CHECK FOR UPDATE, while still holding the SHIFT or ALT key. A windows will pop up.

4. Navigate to the .IPCC file we downloaded in step 1.

5. It will update your iPhone, which should take just a few seconds.

6. Unplug your iPhone and reboot it.

7. You should now have MMS enabled.

Some people report loss of cellular data network and loss of visual voicemail. I haven't experienced any of that but if you do, here is how to fix it.

Go to Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network to update your configuration.

Visual Voicemail change wap.cingular to acds.voicemail MMS settings should match the following (leave blank fields blank):

APN: wap.cingular Username: Password: MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com MMS Proxy: 066.209.011.32 MMS Max Message Size: 614400 MMS UA Prof URL:

Troubleshooting: Reader "Since OS 7" gives an important tip in the comments.

Those receiving the 0xE800003D error: Did you install a carrier theme from Cydia? Like the AT&T logo or MakeitMine? If so remove that and try again. It seems that others before were getting that error because of this.

That's it. As usual, since this is a hack, you are taking the risk of messing up your iPhone...

Edit Videos On Your iPhone 3G

Last month, we talked about a simple hack to let you edit videos on your iPhone 2G or 3G the same way the iPhone 3GS does. iPhone OS 3.1 just made this hack obsolete for 3G users as it is now possible to edit videos on the iPhone 3G without hacking the phone.

If you updated your iPhone 3G to the new 3.1 firmware, you should now be able to trim videos and save them in your camera roll. In order to edit a video, you should have someone email you the video and save it to your camera roll first. From there, you can access the video, edit it, and save the changes.

That's a nice little upgrade for the iPhone 3G. Though I still think it's scandalous Apple didn't allow the 3G to get video recording.
