Unlock Your iPhone 3G With UltraSn0w

UltraSn0w, the soft unlock for the iphone 3G 3.0 firmware is now available thanks to the good work of the Dev Team. Don't wait any minute to install UltraSn0w and unlock your iPhone 3G.

Note that this tutorial was originally written for the 3.0 unlock but the steps are exactly the same to unlock iPhone OS 3.0.1. I simply updated this guide with the latest info.

Before installing UltraSn0w, your iPhone 3G has to be jailbroken and running the latest 3.0 3.0.1 firmware. You can either jailbreak your iPhone 3G using RedSn0w (see tutorial here) or by using PwnageTool (see tutorial here).

After jailbreaking your iPhone 3G, follow these simple steps:

Launch Cydia. Add the following source to Cydia repo666.ultrasn0w.com (note there is a "0" in sn0w, not an "o"). After installing this source in Cydia, search for "ultraSn0w". Install UltraSn0w and reboot your iPhone. Voila!

Note that T-Mobile users should disable 3G before using UltraSn0w.

Unfortunately, the new iPhone 3G S still can't be unlocked because there is no jailbreak for it yet.

Dev Team Demos UltraSn0w – iPhone 3G Unlock

As announced yesterday, Dev Team member MuscleNerd did a demo of UltraSn0w, the new software unlock for the iPhone 3G (skip to 2.20 min on the video below). Unlike its predecessor YellowSn0w, UltraSn0w will unlock your iPhone 3G no matter what firmware, bootloader or baseband you have, as long as you have the new 3.0 firmware installed.

The actual program that UltraSn0w injects into the baseband to accomplish the unlock is the exact same one the Dev Team developed for YellowSn0w. What changed is that the Dev Team found a new "hole" to inject the unlocking payload.

During his demo, MuscleNerd successfully jailbroke his iPhone 3G and proved it by inserting a T-Mobile SIM card.

UltraSn0w won't be available until Friday and like YellowSn0w, it will be downloadable through Cydia. Your iPhone will obviously have to be jailbroken and the Dev Team will release the necessary tools for that (QuickPwn and PwnageTool) soon.

Again, just to make this clear, there is no baseband downgrade needed. You can just upgrade to 3.0 tomorrow and wait for the Dev Team to push its unlocking tools and UltraSn0w on Friday.

Note that this unlock is only valid for the iPhone 3G. According to the Dev Team, this hack may be applicable to the new iPhone 3G S if it can be jailbroken, which should happen sometimes soon. Go Dev Team!

Since the creation of the App Store a few months ago, iPhone apps reviews are everywhere. I've always tried not to spend too much time on apps reviews to focus more on interesting news or hacks for the iPhone. From time to time though, we do have apps reviews, and it's mostly the job of dannyswrld.

I've received a few emails and comments from you guys asking what were my favorite iPhone apps so I thought I'd write a post about it. Note that these apps aren't ranked in any specific order.

CyDelete Uninstalls Cydia Apps Directly From Your SpringBoard

CyDelete is a new application available in Cydia that aims at making your Cydia apps uninstall a breeze. Currently, deleting a Cydia application from your springboard is a 7 step pain in the ass: start Cydia > Manage > Packages > Look for the package > Modify > Remove > Confirm.

By installing CyDelete, you won't have to go through this process anymore and you'll be able to uninstall Cydia apps just as easily as you delete App Store apps. Simply hold down the icon, wait for them to start wiggling, and tap the X.

CyDelete is still in beta so it might crash on you every once in a while, but so far, it's worked perfectly for me.

QuickGold App Launcher

Well here is a really handy app for iPhone: QuickGold. For those of you wondering this is only for those jailbroken devices. Apple has a 9 page limit for apps on the iPhone springboard. Although the Categories app is very useful to bypass the 9 page limit, when you have hundreds of apps in one folder it's kind of a pain having to look though all of them looking for one app. That's when QuickGold comes in handy.

QuickGold is an app launcher. When on your home screen, simply press the home button and a keyboard and search bar will pop-up. Start typing the name of the app you're looking for and QuickGold will show you apps that match what you're typing. In most cases, you just need to type a few letters.

App Store for Jailbroken iPhones Coming Soon

Saurik, the developer behind Cydia is working on an alternative to the dictatorship of the Apple App Store that will break Apple's grip on the iPhone. There is not much information about it yet, but I assume this will be a new feature added to Cydia that will let you pay for apps.

Like many of you, I am tired of seeing the best apps rejected from the App Store. Apps like Cycorder or xGPS will never make it to the App Store, unless Apple decides to loosen up on the SDK. This new Cydia Store coming up will finally give a chance to non qualifying apps to be distributed in a semi-controlled environment, while generating revenues for the developers. Of course, you will still need to be on a jailbroken iPhone to take advantage of the Cydia store.

According to the WSJ:

Another small company plans a store called Rock Your Phone for iPhone users who have not yet modified their devices to make it easier to download and buy unauthorized applications. A third start-up is building an online store that specializes in selling adult games for the iPhone.

Yeah, now we're talking! Bring on the porn!! hehe.

More seriously, I think this initiative is a big step towards freeing your iPhone from Apple's claws and finally empowering the users to do or install whatever they want on their iPhones.

Search Cydia Repos From The Web

ModMyi recently created an online directory that lets you browse Cydia apps directly from your computer. It's something I had thought about doing for a long time, but didn't have the technical skills or finances to put it in place.

Cydia apps listings show basic information about each application as well as a screenshot.

I find this tool much more convenient to use than your iPhone/iPod Touch when simply browsing apps. Note that you won't be able to download any app from the site.

hClipboard is Another iPhone Copy/Paste App

Earlier this week I posted about Clippy, an application that brilliantly brings copy/paste to the iPhone. I love Clippy. It is simple and it does exactly what you want it to do. One thing it doesn't do is letting you copy text from Safari, but hey, you can't ask it too much...

Available since today in Cydia is hClipboard, a copy/paste application that does the same as Clippy, except it makes it harder for you use...

Before installing hClipboard, I looked at the "more information" tab in Cydia about this app. I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of directions to use this app. I think that I'm a pretty smart guy when it comes to tech stuff so I didn't read the directions and decided to try it thinking I would figure it out.

I installed the app and went to the my Mail app to try it out. Once there I didn't know what to do. I briefly looked at the instructions online but honestly, I was turned off. To me, an app should be simple enough so a caveman can do it. This app required to much effort from me. I know that I should just read the instructions and I would get it in a minute but for some reason, I don't want to.

That's too bad because hClipboard seems to be a pretty good app from what I read... I'll stick too Clippy!

UPDATE: I wasn't able to fall asleep last night so I played around with hClipBoard for a bit and I realized how easy it is to use.

Simply place the cursor where you want to start copying text and hit the "select from here" icon (see image above) Then place the cursor where you want to end the text copy and hit the same icon to "select to here and copy" That's it. The text is now copied to your clipboard. You can repeat the steps above several times and have multiple copied sections on your clipboard. Now whenever you want to paste the text somewhere, simply tap this piece of text on your clipboard.

You can also create templates of text you paste on a regular basis, which is very convenient for email signatures for examples.

hClipBoard is definitely better than Clippy and after giving it a real try, I can tell that this is my new favorite copy/paste app.

Clippy Finally Brings Copy/Paste To The iPhone

[digg-me]Copy/Paste is without a doubt the most wanted feature on the iPhone and I still don't understand why Apple hasn't given it to us yet... Last month, I talked about PasteBud, which was kinda bringing copy/paste to the iPhone through a combination of javascript bookmarks and web services. PasteBud definitely had its share of restrictions and it wasn't as great as I thought it would be so I gave up on it.

Now comes Clippy, a free application available in Cydia through the iSpazio repo. Let me tell you right away that, even though it's still a beta version, Clippy is the best app for copy/pasting on your iPhone so far!

How does Clippy work? After installing the application, type any text you want and simply hit the "123" button on your keyboard to show the copy/paste buttons. Tap "copy" and start selecting the text you want to copy. Tap "copy" again to end the selection. Then tap "paste" to paste this text where you want it to be.

Pretty simple, huh? It does have a few limitations though...

First, Clippy only works across the Notes, Mail, and SMS apps and that is a big issue to me. Most of the text I want to copy comes from the web and Clippy won't allow me (yet) to copy/paste snippets of text from Safari.

Second, Clippy will only let you copy one line at a time. For example, if you have a 5-line paragraph, you will only be able to copy one line from that paragraph. That is kind of an issue too because you most likely want to copy larger text areas.

Besides that, Clippy works great! Remember it is still in beta so it will most likely be improved and work for Safari and also let you copy several lines at a time.

UPDATE: Clippy got an update this morning and it now allows you to copy several lines at a time and use copy/paste anywhere you can use the keyboard (ie Maps, Twittfon, etc...). So most of my negative comments about Cippy are not valid anymore. Next step to make it the perfect copy/paste app is to allow it to copy text from Safari!

This Is My New Favorite iPhone Theme

This is my new iPhone theme. I find it absolutely gorgeous! It's called Aladar and it's available through the MacCiti repo on Cydia. I tweaked it a little bit so it doesn't look exactly like the original, but it's still very close. You will need WinterBoard to activate this theme.

RedSn0w Demo

Dev Team member MuscleNerd showed us a demo of RedSn0w running on an iPod Touch 2G earlier today on Qik. The video reveals that RedSn0w is a patch that keeps the iPod Touch from detecting the jailbreak and stopping it from booting. Absolutely brilliant! RedSn0w is still not ready for a public release but as I said before, I am pretty sure it will be released before the end of the month.
