Spirit Jailbreak for Every iPhone iOS 4 on Its Way

Yesterday I was telling you the  Dev Team is working hard on an unlock for iPhone 4. Some of you may have wondered why the Dev Team would be working on an unlock when a jailbreak is not even ready yet, right?

That's because according to MuscleNerd, a jailbreak for all devices at iOS 4 is already taken care of by the upcoming release of Spirit by Comex.

Now the question is: when will Spirit for iOS 4 be available? With Apple supposed to release an update to iOS 4 in the upcoming weeks to supposedly fix the antenna issue, I doubt Comex will release Spirit beforehand and give Apple a chance to patch the exploit.

I bet you can't wait for Spirit for iOS 4, can you?

Frash: Android Flash Ported to the iPad

A few weeks  ago, Comex, the  developer of  Spirit, shared with us  a video of Flash running on the iPhone. Today, Comex introduces Frash, which is basically a port of Flash  for Android on the iPad.

Frash can currently run most Flash programs natively in the iPad MobileSafari browser, but support for other devices (3GS and iPhone 4 only due to hardware requirements) is on the way, as well as support for iOS 4.

Comex won't release Frash until it is stable and that might take a while. If you're a developers and you want to join the effort at http://github.com/comex/frash.

The iPhone 4 is Jailbroken

Ladies and gentlemen, there is a jailbreak for iPhone 4. iPhone hackers PlanetBeing and Chpwn have managed to get root access (jailbreak) the iPhone 4, by using a variation of the Spirit jailbreak by Comex.

A few hours ago, PlanetBeing posted the following on Twitter:

Think I’m the first one I know about to get a root shell (and SSH) on iPhone 4, using poor @comex’s code (since he has no iPhone 4)

This was later confirmed by MuscleNerd who posted a tweet containing this retina display image of Cydia on an iPhone 4.

And now for the bad news... iPhone hacker p0sixninja confirmed on Twitter that this version of Spirit used to jailbreak the iPhone 4 cannot be released at the time being because it contains parts of Apple's proprietary code, which is obviously illegal.

This bad news was also confirmed by PlanetBeing which insisted on the fact that Spirit is nowhere ready for a release. What does that mean? Well, it means it might take a few more days, maybe weeks, until Spirit can officially be released to jailbreak the iPhone 4.

Comex Gives Us A Preview of Flash on the iPhone

Comex, the guy behind the Spirit jailbreak, recently posted this video on YouTube showing an iPhone running Flash. We don't have any additional information about this.

When you see what a great job Comex was able to do with Spirit, I can't wait to see what he's got up his sleeves to run Flash on the iPhone.

Comex is not the only one working on porting Flash to iOS. Chris Smoak recently unveiled SmokeScreen, a workaround that will allow you to play Flash content on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Spirit Jailbreak Released

Spirit, the userland jailbreak for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad is finally available. We've been waiting for Spirit for quite a while now. It was supposed to be released last Friday but Comex, its developer, decided to wait a few more days to make sure new iPad 3G owners would have time save their SHSH blobs, but also to finish up Spirit and make sure it was 100% reliable.

For the occasion, Comex developed a new website for Spirit at SpiritJB dot com where you can download the Windows and Mac version. Note that at the time I am writing this, my antivirus keeps flagging Spirit as a trojan. Besides, the site is very slow due to an overwhelming amount of traffic.

UPDATE: I turned off my antivirus and downloaded Spirit. It is 100% safe.

Things worth noting about Spirit: Spirit is an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch on firmware 3.1.2, 3.1.3, and 3.2 Your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad must be activated Your device must not be stuck on the Connect to iTunes logo or emergency call screen It will work on any version of iTunes 9 (including 9.1.1) Spirit will not unlock your iPhone If you are currently using a tethered jailbreak, you have to restore in order to use Spirit Do not upgrade if you unlocked your iPhone 3G or 3GS (if you have the SHSH blobs for 3.1.2, you can restore to it) While Spirit is stable for all devices, your iPad may act a little funny due to packages that have not been updated for it yet

Comex did a great job on that one. Congrats!

UPDATE 2: I wrote a Spirit jailbreak tutorial for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

Spirit Jailbreak Release Delayed

I don't know if it's just a bad joke but Comex, the developer behing the userland jailbreak Spirit, just said on Twitter that he was delaying the release of this new jailbreak.

This decision came after Comex read a year old article about how quick Apple was at patching a security hole in firmware 3.0.

If true, this piece of news is a a huge let down. Everyone was really waiting for Spirit to be released. I fail to understand the logic behind this decision. Whatever date the jailbreak will be released, there will always be the risk of Apple patching the firmware at some point.

Cross your fingers! Maybe Comex is just playing with our nerves... How do you feel about that?

Spirit Jailbreak for iPhone,iPad and iPod Touch Coming Tomorrow

A few weeks ago I was telling you about Spirit, a new userland jailbreak by Comex that would supposedly jailbreak all iPhones and iPod Touch 3.1.3, no matter what model, as well as the iPad 3.1.2.

After a month of painful wait, the official realease date finally came from Comex himself. When someone asked him on Twitter when we could expect his Spirit jailbreak to be released, Comex said "Friday".

It is pretty unclear what Spirit will look like. It was originally believed to be a browser-based jailbreak like jailbreakme.com but Chpwn confirmed a few hours ago that Spirit doesn't work out of a browser. He also made it clear that Spirit will work for the latest firmware of the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

That is indeed good news for some of us who "accidentally" updated to 3.1.3 and got stuck without a jailbreak. It's important to note that Spirit is a jailbreak only. It will not unlock your iPhone! There is no word about a 3.1.3 iPhone unlock and if I were you, I wouldn't hold my breath. I suspect we won't see a 3.1.3 unlock until iPhone OS 4 is released in a few weeks.

If you're going to be using Spirit for your iDevice, MuscleNerd recommended NOT to update iTunes to the latest 9.1.1 version. According to MuscleNerd, iTunes can detect Spirit and remove it, so make sure you stay away from this "update" button.

I just got my iPad and I was feeling really miserable without all my jailbreak apps. I'm glad I'm going to be able to take full advantage of this beautiful device as soon as I jailbreak it with Spirit.

What about you? Are you excited?

More Evidence Of iPad Jailbreak In The Wild

Yesterday I told you that GeoHot had found a jailbreak for the iPad. It seems he's not the only one as more proofs of an iPad jailbreak are surfacing.

This time, the leak comes from Comex, the developer behind the Spirit jailbreak. A few hours ago, Comex tweeted the image above showing MultiFl0w on the iPad.

In the meantime, ZodTTD posted a video by Chpwn showing an iPad running the N64 NES emulator for iPhone.

As usual, there is no ETA date but I believe this iPad jailbreak release is now imminent.

iPad Jailbreak Video

It didn't take too long for  the jailbreak community to come up with a jailbreak for the iPad. Last week I told you about Spirit, a jailbreak for iPhone 3.1.3, and today, MuscleNerd confirmed the iPad jailbreak using a variation of Spirit, originally developed by Comex.

Even better news is that this jailbreak can also be applied to every platform including the iPhone 3GS and iPod Touch 3G, and potentially to the iPad 3G.

Credit goes where it's due. This iPad jailbreak is a cross-team effort by @chronicdevteam, @comex, @chpwn, and the Dev Team.

If you were on the fence about buying an iPad, this might just be the reason you were looking for.

There is no estimated release date for this jailbreak. My guess is that these smart hackers will wait for iPhone OS 3.2, so Apple doesn't patch the firmware and render this jailbreak useless.

How exciting!

Spirit – A New Jailbreak For iPhone 3.1.3

Just a few days after GeoHot released a video of a potential untethered jailbreak for 3.1.3, a new video by hacker Comex emerged on the internet showing a new userland jailbreak called Spirit.

UPDATE: Spirit has been released. You can see my Spirit jailbreak tutorial here.

A userland jailbreak is a browser-based jailbreak, similar to the good old JailbreakMe.com, which allows you to jailbreak your iPhone simply by visiting a site from Safari and agreeing to jailbreak your iPhone. If you used JailbreakMe.com before, you will probably remember how easy and quick it was. As for me, I remember going visit the Apple Store and jailbreak a bunch of iPhones on display for the heck of it...

Presumably, Spirit will work for every device on 3.1.3 with the newer bootrom, and potentially even the iPad. It's interesting to note that this is an untethered jailbreak.

For those of you that might be skeptical about this video, MuscleNerd confirmed that it is indeed a legit userland  jailbreak.

The question on everybody's lips is when will this new jailbreak be available? Well, there is no ETA at the time. Now that Geohot has been challenged though, I suspect that he's going to rush to release his new jailbreak, which in turn will kinda force Comex to release his too. Only time will tell.
