Apple to start offering ‘Spoken Editions’ of news articles via iTunes

You'll soon be able to listen to news articles in iTunes, reports TechCrunch. The outlet says that in the near future, you'll be able to browse through a new category of podcasts that will allow you to listen to news stories from your favorite publishers.

These new podcasts will be labeled "Spoken Edition" in iTunes, and the format will be short-form programs that offer listeners an audio version of a publisher's articles. So you could essentially listen to the news while commuting or working out.

Some heavy duty cases for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Although Apple has taken some major steps this year to make the iPhone more durable, the device is still very susceptible to bumps and scratches. This is why we recommend putting a case on your smartphone if you want it to stay in like-new condition.

We've already recommended a number of different cases, but for those who work and use their phones in more harsh environments, a heavy-duty case is the only way to go. Here are a few we like so far that are available for the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus right now.

Some great minimalist cases for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

If you recently purchased an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, and are in the market for a minimalist case, this post is for you. We've rounded up some of our favorite minimalist cases for Apple's new handset based on price, personal experience and customer reviews.

So what qualifies as a "minimalist" case? Obviously the term is a bit subjective, but to us this means it has a subtle, unassuming design free of complex patterns and unsightly branding. They're typically thinner, made of a single material, and solid in color.

Yahoo confirms hack, says data from 500 million user accounts stolen

Yahoo on Thursday confirmed that certain user account information was stolen from the company's network in late 2014. Recode has the official statement, which says that it believes more than 500 million users were affected by the breach.

The good news is that Yahoo says from what it knows so far, the stolen information doesn't include payment card data, bank account information, or unprotected passwords. The firm is working closely with law enforcement in its investigation.

Apple’s free app of the week: AG Drive

Apple on Thursday updated its App of the Week promotion with the game AG Drive. This means from now through next Thursday, you can pick up the popular futuristic racing title for free—a solid savings of $4.

AG Drive puts you behind the wheel of a blazing fast anti-gravity craft and up against opponents on gorgeous tracks. It features amazing graphics, easy-to-learn controls, and it works on both iOS and Apple TV.

Apple buys machine learning startup Tuplejump

Apple has acquired an India/US-based machine learning startup known as Tuplejump, reports TechCrunch. The company has essentially confirmed the buyout, offering up its typical "Apple buys smaller technology companies" statement.

This is the iPhone-maker's third publicly-known purchase of a machine learning company within the last year. Remember it bought out artificial intelligence startup Perceptio at the end of last year, and Seattle-based Turi a few months ago.

Some great ultra-thin cases for iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus

Have a new iPhone 7 or 7 Plus? The first thing you're going to want to do—unless you don't care about scratches or abrasions—is find a case for it. And if you're like me, you don't want some big bulky case. You want something ultra-thin that won't get in the way.

So we've put together a list of several great ultra-thin cases for both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. These obviously aren't the only available cases for Apple's new handsets, but we picked these specifically based on personal experience, user feedback, features and pricing.

Apple seeds first beta of iOS 10.1 with new Portrait camera mode

Apple on Wednesday issued the first beta for iOS 10.1. Registered developers can grab the new software via the over-the-air update mechanism in the iOS Settings app, or via Apple's online developer portal.

Perhaps the most significant change in this first 10.1 beta is the addition of Portrait camera mode— a software feature for the iPhone 7 Plus Apple showed off earlier this month that creates a 'bokeh' effect.

Apple updates Mac iWork apps with support for real-time collaboration

In addition to macOS Sierra, Apple on Tuesday also released updates for its Mac iWork apps to support real-time collaboration. The feature was announced at the iPhone 7 event earlier this month, and was added to iOS apps last week.

Real-time collaboration is exactly what it sounds like. With it, users can work simultaneously in any iWork app regardless of device. A list is displayed of all current document editors, and users see the others' cursor activity in real time.

Tweetbot for Mac updated with support for macOS Sierra, extended Tweets and more

Tweetbot users will be happy to hear that the Tapbots have updated their popular Twitter client today to support the just-released macOS Sierra software. The release brings the app to version 2.4.2, and it includes several improvements.

Among these improvements is support for extended Tweets—a change Twitter made to its service this week that prevents media URLs and Quote Tweets from counting against your 140 character limit. It also now supports extended videos.
