iPad 10, the elevator pitch

Apple unveiled the tenth-generation iPad via a press release published on its website on October 18, 2022. The tablet adopted USB-C for charging and data.

It has adopted the iPad Pro’s design language with thin borders and square edges. As we saw with the iPad Air,  Touch ID is embedded into the top button.

The iPad 10 also debuted a landscape FaceTime camera for more natural video calls. It came in vibrant colors, including blue, pink and yellow [tech specs].

The price went up from $329 to $449, but the previous $329 model remained in the lineup. For further information, read a press release in the Apple Newsroom.

Our take: Not so budget anymore

This iPad used to be the so-called budget iPad. It’s the only Apple tablet that could give Chromebooks a run for their money. We’re not sure whether Apple has decided to cede the education market to Google, but the new iPad is a tough sell for schools.

If you buy an Apple Pencil ($99) along with a Magic Keyboard Folio ($249), you’re nearing the $800 mark. You could buy a Chromebook with a keyboard and stylus for much less than that. Even Microsoft’s Surface Go seems a better proposition.

No matter how you look at it, there’s no denying that Apple’s enter tablet strategy is the worst it has ever been—it’s no longer clear which model to buy.
