KGI: iPhone 8 to feature 5.8-inch OLED display with virtual buttons

By , Feb 15, 2017

This year’s flagship iPhone, often referred to as the ‘iPhone 8’ or ‘iPhone X,’ will feature a 5.8-inch display reports KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo. In his latest research note, shared by MacRumors, the analyst says 5.15-inches of the display will be usable, with the rest of it reserved at the bottom for “virtual buttons.”

As has been previously rumored, Kuo says the display will take up the entire front of the phone, meaning no bezels or physical Home button. This also means that although the handset will have a display roughly the size of the current iPhone 7 Plus, its body may not be much bigger than the 4.7-inch iPhone 7.

In addition to the OLED iPhone 8, the research note reaffirms speculation that Apple will also launch new 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch LCD handsets this year. It’s possible they may see minor performance improvements, similar to the Series 1 Apple Watch strategy, but the consensus is the OLED iPhone will be the flagship.

Other new features rumored for Apple’s new handset include wireless charging, a glass body framed by stainless steel, better battery life and some sort of augmented reality feature. It’s believed, and Kuo reiterates this in today’s note, that these enhancements will push the iPhone’s full retail price tag beyond $1,000.

    I just got a raise

    *throws money at apple*

    Take my money

Been saying this since the ipad pro got on the market. They want a bigger profit margin so they are introducing a new flagship line while slowly mid-ranging the older ones.
Ipad pro, ipad pro 9.7 inch, iphone plus and now the iphone pro.
They are doing the same to the macbooks.

After all these years, they add Touch ID to the MacBook Pro. And now shortly after, they’re thinking about getting rid of it from the iPhone. Nice.

    • Christopher

This doesn’t mean they’re getting rid of Touch ID. Apple has patents that show that they can embed the sensor into the display. So like the iPhone 7 the home button will be solid state, and most likely will use the Taptic Engine so simulate a “click”. The only difference is it would be a part of the display.

      • Shan

Sorry. I should’ve posted this comment on 9to5Mac. They have this article in more detailed and mention the potential loss of Touch ID.

      • Christopher

Common mistake. I do this all the time lol.

There’s no way they would remove TouchID. At the very least you have the entire Apple Pay system depending on it.

Edit : just to clarify – the dedicated circle below the screen might be gone, however TouchID will still remain in one form or another.

There’s no way they are getting rid of it! They will most likely have it embedded in the screen. Touch ID is here to stay. Not sure why 9to5 Mac said it might be removed.

Seriously it won’t be 5.15 inch it will be at least 5.5 they’re not making a premium smartphone again

    • Jeffrey

Nahh, not nearly everybody likes a 5.5+ inch form factor, most people like the 4.7 inch iPhone (or even think it’s a tad too big). So to reach the biggest customer segment they’re going for the 4.7 inch form factor (but then with a 5.15 inch screen this time).

      • Siri Tim Cook Holness

They should at least keep 2 sizes only idiots don’t know 4.7 or even 5.1 inch is way too small

      • Jeffrey

I’m sorry but thats the biggest bs I’ve read in a while. 4.5 inch or below was the standard for smartphones for many many years, and Apple joined other companies by making a 4.7 and 5.5 inch iPhone later than most people expected.

Apple always marketed their iPhones for being perfectly useable with one hand, which is why they doubted to make the step to release bigger than 4 inch smartphones.

Apple is not Samsung, which thinks bigger is always better and sells over 6 inch phones. WHY WOULD YOU WANT A PHONE WITH A SCREEN OVER 6 INCHES???? Apple will never ever release a phone with a bigger form factor than that of the iPhone 6/6s/7 plus.

A lot of people think the 4.7 inch iPhone is perfect or even a bit too big. I personally know a lot of people who prefer the iPhone SE because of it’s 4 inch screen, and I also know there aren’t a lot of people who prefer an iPhone X Plus. And the ones that do are smartphone enthousiasts 9 out of 10 times.

      • Siri Tim Cook Holness

4.7 inch is way too small for me I watch a lot of videos and play a lot of games bigger is better for that

      • Jeffrey

        Then buy an iPad Mini.

      • Siri Tim Cook Holness

Why buy an iPad mini it doesn’t get the latest specs LTE-A or 3D touch or anything and it’s declining bc of phablets like every small tablet

      • Siri Tim Cook Holness

If they were SMARTPHONE enthusiasts they wouldn’t prefer the plus bc the plus is considered a phablet

      • Jeffrey

        Oh we’re gonna be a smartass now…..

      • Siri Tim Cook Holness

I think they should release a 6.69 inch iPhone 8 plus with 100% screen to body

      • Jeffrey

        Hahah, you’re funny

      • Siri Tim Cook Holness

I don’t see them making a premium smartphone they’re gonna either make it a phablet or 2 models

      • Siri Tim Cook Holness

If not they’ll piss off a group of people either way

      • Siri Tim Cook Holness

Seriously they’re not gonna make their most expensive iPhone a smartphone in 2017 it’s been a phablet since 2014 and it’s just ridiculous to think they’d go back to they’re most expensive iPhone being sub-5.5″

Touch bar coming to the iPhone?
