Not to be outdone by Apple’s $799 iPad Pro, which has an ultra high-resolution screen measuring 12.9 inches diagonally and goes on sale next month, rival Samsung is gearing up to launch a brand new tablet with a huge 18.4-inch screen, the Galaxy View.

Although the View is yet to officially launch, some online retailers are now taking pre-orders for the $599 Android device, 9to5Google reported Monday.

Available for pre-order over at Adorama for $599 for an entry-level model with thirty-two gigabytes of built-in flash storage, the Galaxy View is powered by Samsung’s own 1.6 GHz Exynos 7580 octa-core chip with 2GB of RAM, code-named ‘Carmen2’.

On the connectivity front, the device includes Bluetooth 4.1 Low Energy, 802.11 ac Wi-Fi networking and Cat. 6 CA LTE cellular. Built-in storage is expandable up to 128 gigabytes via a micro-SD card.

The front camera is a paltry 2.1-megapixel module with 1080p video capture at thirty frames per second. There’s no LED flash on the front camera and there’s no second camera on the back.

Driven by Android Lollipop, the View’s gigantic 18.4-inch TFT screen has a full HD 1,920-by-1,080 pixel resolution. Samsung claims the View’s 5,700 mAh battery provides 8.5 hours of video playback time.

If the promotional images and the device’s moniker are an indication, Samsung is positioning the View as an inexpensive tablet with a massive screen, mostly dedicated to watching video and enjoying media.

Samsung starts again with their desperation. always has to rival something that is already out. why don’t they be original? you don’t see apple comparing their products to Samsung to see if they are keeping up with the competition. Samsung is the one who has to compare themselves to the best.

    • Mike

“You don’t see apple comparing their products to Samsung.” You have no clue what you are saying… They had commercials back then doing that.

      • Manuel Molina

        The Mac/PC commercials.

      • burlow

what? apple has never compared themselves to samsung.

      • Jay

i think people really should hear themselves out !! ROFL

    • Benedict

Your knowledge of tech really starts and ends with Apple. There is the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 12.2″ since 2014 on the market. Besides that, Apple is always steps behind the state of art: bigger phones, smaller tablets, better cameras, better resolution, iOS features…

      • igorsky

I don’t think you understand what “state of the art” means if you consider the size of a phone to be state of the art. You know what’s state of the art? Pressure sensitive screens, 64bit in-house designed chips, iCloud. In those features, those that are true “state of the art”, Apple is always ahead.

      • Bugs Bunnay

Might like to add environmentally friendly.

      • You can remove iCloud from that list. Compared to the competition it definitely isn’t state of the art. One day it probably will be but today is not that day.

      • Benedict

You know what I mean – there are hundreds of features and newer hardware which Apple does not use in their devices. ARM’s 64-Bit technology also is not Apple’s credit. Force Touch is the only thing since years which they come up first with – whereas Samsungs Stylus does the same trick when hovering over the screen. ANd Google and others started their “cloud” services long before icloud was released in 2011.

      • Benedict

        ..perhaps for 10th anniversary 🙂

      • You have an watch for that, pal

      • RFMFP

Just to say, apple was the first company to announce it would built a 12″ tablet. Some weeks later Samsung announced to the public a 12″ tablet. Just like the Apple Watch: Apple announced it would built a smart watch, and guess what? Some weeks later Samsung announced to the public a smart watch. Sorry if my English is not correct

      • Snailpo

Samsung had smart watches years before apple did? Unless I’m reading this wrong

      • apple never announced it but it has been rumored for years now and samsung beat apple to the punch

      • George

Apple never announced shit, now if they heard rumors then fine but don’t bullshit me with what apple announced to make

      • rfow

George’s butt is so hurt right now.

      • George

Yeah it angers me when people talk out of their ass.

      • John

They didn’t have to announce anything. Apple had already filled patents for a watch way before Samsung announced they were making one. Apple could of announced it but chose not to because that’s what they do. They keep things quiet. Now I suggest you sit back down.

      • George

I suggest you suck less apple D.

      • John

yh ok little boy. Go talk trash over the Internet. You certainly couldn’t do it to my face. And I would love to ruin that pretty boy face you have. You lookin like a gayer Ben stiller.

      • George

At least I don’t look like a serial killer.

      • The Tab Pro is such a bad seller its not even funny.

      • iPhoneWINS

        exactly… killed by iPad

      • I love Apple products, but am not a fanboy and can admit that you’re mostly right here. Of course the fanboys are gonna bash you and defend their precious Apple though…

      • iPhoneWINS

        it sucks

  • iPhoneWINS

LOL now thee companies are talking small TV screen and selling them as expensive “tablets” lol

  • ravinigga

I see this as a downgrade 2gb ram and lollipop, TFT screen no back camera?. And why 18.4 inch

    • Chindavon

      Cuz it’s bigger than 12.9″ :o)

      • ravinigga

I know but I know by android is higher specs but this is lower than say s5

  • Franklin Richards

Cool another product for Apple to outsell you at.

  • redjazon

Samsung: “let’s make it bigger and cheaper than iPad Pro!” Lol!
Good luck to squeezing that “tablet” in your backpack when traveling.

    • @dongiuj

Why would you need to stick a tablet in your backpack when travelling?

      • Having a tablet used to mean it was supposed to be portable.

      • redjazon

        Thank you!

      • @dongiuj

And it still is, just like a laptop is portable. This thing would even fit in my rucksack no problems.

      • Since when have laptop with screens over 17 inches been portable lol?

      • @dongiuj

Remember, this isn’t 18″ in length, it’s diagonally so there’s barely any difference in screen size. A 17″ laptop would take up more room probably due to its thickness. I have carried a laptop of this size in my rucksack along with other stuff. This guy is talking about a backpack (considerably larger than a rucksack).
My question to him was, why would you want to put a tablet in a rucksack? I don’t see his point as I said to Simon earlier. Look at the logical situations people generally use a backpack when travelling.
If you’re travelling for a long period of time with a backpack it’s because you have everything need (clothes wise etc) and no excess materials/weight (a tablet).
If you’re travelling for a short period of time then you either have enough room in your backpack or you most probably have another bag (rucksack perhaps) as normal hand luggage like I do very often (I see many people almost every time I travel doing the same) and have no problems fitting something of this size plus toiletries/documents etc while travelling on short trips for work.
I honestly don’t see a problem and don’t see his point.

      • No, your right its not a problem, its just not as portable as the smaller tablets are. Having such a big tablet in and bag with other things could be a problem though It could be super thin and easy to bend which would also make it easier to break too.

      • Because people use their hands for more important functions when they are on the go?? You know like opening the door, driving, not looking like a dbag walking down the street with a tablet in your hand, etc. lol
The OP actually made a great point here, that this thing won’t fit in most backpacks, as normal people would be concerned about something like that. HA

      • George

Maybe this tablet isn’t for that?

      • redjazon

My point, exactly. Thanks for expressing it better.

      • @dongiuj

So you’re saying this wouldn’t fit in a backpack easily? All depends on what’s in the backpack.
If you’re driving then, as you stated, then there is plenty of room for a tablet in your car. If you’re talking about using one while driving then I hope you don’t possess a drivers license. HA.
Most people that are travelling with a backpack won’t be needing a tablet. All they’ll need is their phone. You probably haven’t done any travelling that long with a backpack by the sounds of it. If you have then you’ll know it’s unnecessary weight and space taken up for any kind of reasonable sized tablet. HA.
If you use a backpack for travelling for a short period of time then I would imagine you also have either enough space in your backpack/have a separate piece of hand luggage which will still be big enough to fit this sized tablet in. I know this because I’ve done it plenty of time with my laptop (with its thickness and weight I believe it will be no different than this tablet) in my rucksack (rucksack=smaller than a backpack) and still managed to fit many other necessary documents and travelling needs in the same bag. HA.
So my point is, it’s not really an issue like he’s trying make out it is. HA.

  • igorsky

It’s not just the copying…its the timing. Apple releases something, Samsung releases something similar. Without fail. It’s comical at this point.

    • George

Samsung has had a tab pro 12 inch since 2013 so they copied how exactly?

  • Chris Wagers

These will not sell enough to continue producing them next year. I think we’ll see them not make a tablet this big again imho. Not enough people demand something of this size. It’s not like it’s a phone where a bigger screen allows you to see everything a bit better. Again just my thoughts.

  • Bugs Bunnay

    1.6 ghz… Disgusting.

    • It is an octa-core though…If that even really makes a difference.

      • George

        It does

      • Bugs Bunnay

sadly no. it does not. won’t go into details, but look at lg g2 vs g3 and g4. higher hertz over higher cores anytime. or… look at apple’s devices for another comparison.

  • iDude

they should ship it with wall mount, i don’t think people would carry something like that.

    • Kenneth Delgado

      Lol.

  • Lance Baker

Well, Samsung technically had a 12 inch tablet long before the iPad Pro. Not saying Apple copied because they certainly didn’t. Just pointing this out.

    • askep3

Oh yeah I read about the mat in a comment below, you are right!

      • George

        Since 2013 they’ve had a pro 12 inch

      • askep3

Ya I didn’t pay attention to the specific sizes haha

  • Could you imagine if these became popular and everywhere you went you saw people taking pics with these? lol

    • askep3

That would be amazing, the world would instantly know who to stay away from

  • George

That is a crazy low price

  • Manuel Molina

Well played Samsung, well played. I like it.

  • John

More importantly … Does it bend?

    • Benedict

Definitely… When you put it in your pocket and sit on it.

  • Martynet

There is 3 photos in this article, where this thing is basically replacing the TV. I can’t see any competition here. Useless device.

    • Mike

Not really… they both copy from each other. If you think about it when you jailbreak an iPhone and download tweaks. Those tweak ideas came from Android phones. Then apple copies those tweak ideas that are in cydia and says its brand new. I feel like the wanna keep cydia because they get most of their ideas for their next iOS. I had the iPhone 6+ jailbroken and now have the Note 5 so I can tell whats different and the same.
