Jailbreak Killer Police Line

The cat and mouse game between Apple and the jailbreak community is still very much happening, if an unconfirmed message from an apparent member of the Pangu Team is to be believed.

Weibo user Daniel_K4, who is apparently a member of the Pangu Team recently posted that iOS 8.1.1 beta that was released yesterday patches exploits used by the Pangu jailbreak, incapacitating the jailbreak process on devices that will be updated to the latest OS version once it is released to the public.

The Weibo message translation, courtesy of Reddit user illusiomist:

Apple has released iOS 8.1.1 beta to developers. After our tests, it has patched the jailbreak exploit. Anyone who wish to jailbreak, please seize the chance to upgrade to iOS 8.1 and do so before Apple officially releases iOS 8.1.1.

So what does it mean for jailbreakers?

It means that devices running iOS 8.1.1 won’t be able to run the jailbreak in its current state. We can always hope the Pangu Team has other tricks up its sleeves and may come with other ways to jailbreak iOS 8.1.1, but the message posted on Weibo by Daniel_K4 doesn’t seem to let any of that hope shine between the words.

If you’re already running iOS 8.1, and you’re already jailbroken, then it seems that your best bet is to enjoy what you have now and make sure you do not update to iOS 8.1.1 once it is released.

If you aren’t running iOS 8.1 yet, then this might be your last chance to update now and jailbreak using the latest version of Pangu.

The Pangu Team itself hasn’t come forward and acknowledged yet that iOS 8.1.1 kills the Pangu jailbreak, so until we get a full confirmation from the team itself, we can only hope that this information isn’t completely accurate. No matter what, we still recommend you proceed with caution. We will of course keep you updated of any new development.

  • Definitely expected this. Bringing as pangu is is titled to work on 8.1.x I assume they have a few tricks up there selves. Or its just my wishful thinking.

    • Mr.Coolfreak

I didn’t during ios 7 it took a long time to patch it. Apple released a lot of updates that didn’t patch it

      • I’m just going on how fast it took to find an exploit for 8.0 and 8.1. Compare to the time it took to Jailbreak iOS7 it sort or coincides with how long it took Apple to patch it.

      • Arjan Vlek

It probably was an easy to use and easy to patch exploit… Like one of the ones (the date/time set back exploit) used on iOS 7

      • Possibly.

      • mrgerbik

Ios 6-7 was a bigger jump change wise internally then 7-8 methinks

      • techraxx

I need a jailbreak now cuz my damn girl updated my iPhone 5S to iOS 8.1 (by accident she claims). by accident my ass!! Now without Cydia I can’t get back the “bigU Movies” app I installed from xsellize repo or insanelyi repo to watch new movies like John Wick, Fury, Dracula Untold, The Equalizer, Annabelle and No Good Deed. I really hope I can use this Pangu jailbreak successfully cuz my nights & weekends won’t be the same when I can’t watch movies.

      • You’ll be fine. Its pretty stable now.

      • Andrew

How exactly does one accidentally update an iPhone’s operating system? That would be pretty hard to do…

“Oops, I accidentally hit ‘Update, Okay, Yes, I agree, Continue’, my bad.”

    • ltcommander_data

Jailbreaks tend to use multiple exploits and Apple probably only patched a portion of them. Enough so that the jailbreak no longer works, but the Pangu team probably has other exploits they can quickly substitute to get it working again. The question is whether it’s worth it or if they should save them for iOS 8.2. I’m hoping for the later.

  • Frank Anthony

OKAY. Just as expected! Apple are quite at work compare to before.!

  • Merman123

Perhaps iOS 8 jailbreak was released too soon? Apple often releases back to back updates when a new device / new iOS is released. Probably should have seen it coming.

    • Antzboogie

      Not really.

  • iltas

  • Jonathan

    That was fast.

    • Marvin

      pangu too

    • Buzz { Light:Year; }

Theres allways an exploit. An update always opens up something else; nothing is perfect.

      • Buzz { Light:Year; }

        But yes super fast

    • pegger1

I think it’s pretty easy for them to track down the hole using the jailbreak.

  • Manor

if the rumors are true and apple plans to release iOS 8.1 and 8.2 in the future before iOS 9 comes out I hope that pangu will be smart enough not to release a jailbreak just for ios 8.1.1

    • Zeyad Kambouris

    • Ian Leon

what if they had a huge amount of exploits.

  • Chocolatewe

pangu are extremely clever, they have got this 😀

  • czarczarczar

    This blows

  • Shawn

I’m f ine with a jailbreak but I’d rather have a stable iOS system. Also my jailbreak somehow keeps me from writing words with an f followed by an i.

    • Antzboogie

      Not me.

      • Shawn

So you’d rather have a version of iOS with wi f i drops and Bluetooth drops over a jailbreak? Dedication.

      • Antzboogie

I’m not having any of those issues my Jailbreak is working official on my iPhone 6 Plus.

      • Shawn

Wish my 6+ was as well of f as yours.

Also found out I can’t put two f’s together.

    • ClaudieX X

The reason is because you wrote it bad once and didn’t change it… so now the corrector thinks that is ok to make a space between the f and the i

      • Shawn

No. I’ve reset the keyboard dictionary. And I highly doubt that iOS auto correct would backspace the whole word and still have it registered with no way to change it. Trust me that if you saw it wouldn’t say that.

      • ClaudieX X

ohhh… I was going to ask you to reset the dictionary… so… can’t help

  • I’m just waiting for a Mac version. I can’t jailbreak yet. 🙁

    • pegger1

That doesn’t stop you from upgrading to 8.1, while you can.
And there are workarounds to jailbreak on a Mac.

    • Evan Moore

If you have a friend who has Windows, jailbreaking takes like 20 seconds. Remove touchid, remove find my iphone FIRST > back up your iphone up to your mac (like normal) > then reset your iphone to factory settings > go to your friends house that has Windows, download the pangu .EXE file and follow the on screen instructions. Your phone will be jailbroken within seconds and then use your mac to restore your iphone to your backup.

    • 10marcer

Honestly with the bugs that the windows version has, Ill be happy to just wait. I guess its smarter for them to focus on the bugs on the windows version first then the make the bug free mac version later

      • Nesly Lacroix

Keep waiting and risk being stuck with iOS 7. The current Windows version is as good you gonna get. Remember you’d still need to restore to factory defaults before you jailbreak. If apple releases 8.1.1 by then, it would be too late.

  • iOS_TV

Jailbreaking doesn’t seem worth it any more. The only thing I miss is swipe selection. I don’t think it justifies the down sides of Jailbreaking.

    • Matt Funk

ikeywi is on the official app store with built in key swiping

    • pegger1

      What’s the downside?
Swipeselection is more than enough reason for me.

      • Antzboogie

        Me too.

    • 10marcer

same here, Its harder and harder to justify jailbreaking now. The only reason why i even do it is to tether since i still have a grandfathered unlimited plan

    • Antzboogie

Down sides? Lol there are way more upsides and the freedom it gives me is exactly what I love about it.

  • WatchTheThrone

    Welp, time to upgrade.

  • Montgomery Tyler

damn just ordered my phone online and now i get to hear this news…..

    • Walter White

      It won’t ship with 8.1.1 , it’s still in a beta-version

      • Montgomery Tyler

        wiping sweat of my forhead….

      • Keith S.

That’s definitely true. And even if it isn’t set to ship for another week or two, it will probably still be on 8.1.

HOWEVER, I think there is another issue people are overlooking. If you are upgrading from an older phone, you will need to restore a backup. If that backup is not already on 8.1 (or even if it is, correct me if I’m wrong), you’ll have to get it signed by Apple. At that point, won’t you be forced to upgrade to 8.1.1?

In other words, if you still have a phone on 7.1 and were holding out to upgrade until you have your iPhone 6 in your hands, you might be running against the clock now.

I’m not sure if you can upgrade to iOS 8.1 today, then restore that backup to a new phone without having to sign it, but if so, that would be the best advice I think.

    • SIMTester

It will be on 8.1 if you just ordered it online. They wouldn’t send the phone with a beta.

      • Montgomery Tyler

oh good i was scared for a min lol.

    • peanuttie

Me, too! I was hoping to jailbreak it as soon as I get it…..now this! 🙁

  • andyr354

I am not going to jump on board with this jailbreak. Still to many issues that I want fixed in the OS. The daily use of my phone is more important than the few tweaks I use.

    • Walter White

      I haven’t had one tbh

      • h4nd0fg0d

      • pegger1

    • Antzboogie

I haven’t had any issues iPhone 6 Plus Jailbreak. I’m loving mine.

  • TwinSon

JB is running perfect on my 6+, roommates’ 6 and and 6+. Will not be updating until a JB solution is found found for future iOS updates. All I ever wanted was Apple Pay and JB, I’m completely content.

    • diggitydang

Mine is buggy… Activator kills Reachability, which I use quite a bit… f.lux doesn’t come on at night (have to re-install it, and it’ll come on for the night, go out in the morning, then won’t switch to nighttime on its own).

I’m still glad I JB, but it is far from perfect right now…

      • TwinSon

Ya but the obvious upside is updates to those tweaks will make the experience smoother and less prone to bugs. I don’t have many on right now (nitrous, nofbmessenger, noslowanimations, icleaner, Zeppelin) so my experience has been mostly trouble free. Just waiting on theming to get updated.

      • diggitydang

Totally agree. I’ll be happy once devs have a chance to update. I’m not hating on JB at all… In fact, I’m anxiously awaiting!!

      • Brent Shelton

The tweaks are buggy. The jailbreak isn’t.

      • pegger1

Exactly. Some people don’t know the difference.

    • Antzboogie

Yeah me too it’s going smooth sailing for me iPhone 6 Plus 64 GB 🙂

  • Sam Romeo

I ordered my iPhone 6 from Apple in the UK on Monday, says it won’t be dispatched for 7-10 days, so maybe next Wednesday it’ll be in the post? What does anyone think the likelihood is that Apple will have seeded 8.1.1 for general release and it’ll be pre-installed new phones by next week?

    • TwinSon

      It wouldn’t be. You’re good.

      • Keith S.

As I commnented above, that’s true — I think — UNLESS all of the following happen before you get your phone up and running: 1) 8.1.1 final is released, 2) 8.1.0 is no longer being signed, 3) you want to restore a backup (e.g.: transfer data from another iPhone) that is not already at 8.1.

      • Sam Romeo

Thanks for your thoughts guys. My last backup, which I’ll restore with, is my from my iPhone 5 running 8.1, so that shouldn’t be a problem. (1) is what I’m most worried about – what is the usual time that passes between Apple seeding an incremental update to releasing a GM? Later iOS 8 betas seemed to be coming out thick and fast before general release, almost every week wasn’t it? What is the likelihood that Apple releases 8.1.1 before next week do you think?

  • pauleebe

8.2 will be jailbroken when it drops in early 2015. The pangu team would be wise to not burn any exploits they have up their sleeves on 8.1.1!

    • pegger1

      or save them for iOS9

  • czarczarczar

Pangu gave Apple the exploit in return for 4 Lambos, 3 Gucci Sweatsuits , and 2 pairs of Yeezy shoes .

    • riazbapoo

      pangu isn’t geohot

      • My Wasted Fantasy

        That’s a sick burn! Haha

      • Buzz { Light:Year; }
      • mlee19841

lol. That dude was a beast what ever happened to him?

  • David Gitman

  • DopamineAddicted

Noooooo!!! So its either keep jailbreak with bugs or no jailbreak and kill bugs. I’m torn

    • urrl

I went back from iOS 8 jailbreak. Since I am coming from Android I preferred Apple reliability instead of bug-ability.

  • Why do i get “error while transferring jailbreak files”? tried it on both iPad mini 2 and iPhone 4S. freshly reset with iOS 8.1

  • Manuel Molina

I know Apple mention more frequent updates in the near future, but did anyone really think the timing of the 8.1.1 update seem fitting to the jailbreak? It’s rare for Apple to patch jailbreaks with a 1.2 or 1.1 update, so this one seems in the lines with how committed they are to stopping people from doing it still.

  • Iliyan

I’m still running jailbroken iOS 7.1, and haven’t upgraded to iOS 8.1 because of the instability reports.

So I wonder, if I download the 8.1 installation file now, will I be able to install it via iTunes some time in the future *after* Apple release 8.1.1 ?

    • Niclas

Nope, you need to restore it before apple stops signing it (when 8.1.1 drops).

  • Alex

Any idea when 8.1.1 will be released?

    • I would assume any time in the next 2 weeks. Probably sooner, usually they don’t do betas for smaller releases so who knows for sure.

  • iRy757

I’m in a good place to accept this. iOS 8.1 is great on my iPhone 6 and the jailbreak is also responding and working very will. I think I will keep this jailbreak and iOS version for a while, at least until iOS 9 comes out lol.

    • urrl

My jail break was fine until a Pangu update. My iP6 Plus just kept ringing when a call came in and could not be stopped. So I restored my phone and got rid of the jail break. I still have iOS 8.1 though.

      • pegger1

If your jailbreak was fine, why would you update Pangu?
If it isn’t broken don’t fix it.

  • Alberto Espinal

New OSes are always buggy, it won’t be long to IOS 9 and we will have another jailbreak soon

    • James G

And by won’t be long, you mean 11 months?

      • Alberto Espinal

Well if you make a mistake and update the software then yea you gonna have to wait

  • Antzboogie

  • ClaudieX X

I tried 3 times with the iPad Mini…

1st: Clean 8.1 good jailbreak but looping reset after restoring data…
2nd: Clean 8.1, first installed the apps then Jailbreak… never came back after respring… no start button responding… scared me a lot… Factory reset Worked…
3th: Clean 8.1 jalbreak started but freezed half way (blue bar at the middle)

    No luck… tired

    Only 8.1 without jailbreak Now

    • Jeroen Claassens

Though the issue should be fixed with the newer versions of Pangu, you could try not setting a passcode and disabling Find my iPad (yep… wanted to say iPhone there) during the process.

      • ClaudieX X

I did that too… no luck

  • Preben Faarkrog Hansen

    mac version comming ?

  • Nesly Lacroix

Today’s news forced my hands. I had already jailbraked my iPad, but was waiting for Auxo 2 and BiteSMS updates. The jailbreak went very smoothly. I used an old Window XP I have laying around.

    • Chris

BiteSMS might be a long way off since the messages app was heavily changed in iOS 8, I’m also waiting for it but don’t expect to see it for at least 2-3 months as a stable release.

      • James G

There doesn’t even seem to be a biteSMS beta for iOS 8 yet. Must be far off.

  • Anthony

Hopefully a mac version come out before iOS 8.1.1

  • Luism27

I have an iPhone 5 Jailbroken on iOS 7.1.2.. Should I update to ios 8.1 and jailbreak it or that will make my phone slow??

    • SIMTester

It won’t necessarily make your phone slow, but you should only update if you’re unhappy with iOS 7. You could run into unforeseen problems although this isn’t necessarily the case.

  • SloneRyder

XBMC alone is enough for me to keep my Jailbreak running on my iPhone 6 can’t forget Moviebox either #TeamJailbreak

  • AnimeGr33n

    NO way am I upgradeing

  • James G

Please release a stable Mac version of Pangu before 8.1.1 🙁

    • pegger1

Update to 8.1 now and you have nothing to worry about.

      • James G

Except having to Restore from an iTunes update instead of OTA.

  • Adam Corona IV

I ordered an Iphone 6 but hasnt came in the mail yet. When it arrives do you guys think it will be on 8.1.1 or 8.1? Any of you guys have experience with this?

    • SIMTester

They will never ship an iPhone with a beta. As it takes a few days for orders to arrive from China and then two days to receive it from the US shipping facility, you will only receive 8.1.1 if your iPhone is backordered two or more weeks.

      • Montgomery Tyler

but we are going to assume it’s on ios 8 through 8.1 when we receive it?

  • Pann Shiha

hasss hasssss pangu is now trifling for 8.1.1 users 😀

  • Is it completely safe that during a reboot sometimes Apple logo appear and disappear upto 3 times and then device boots successfully.

  • Denny Kurniawan Budiman

Well, i jailbroke my iPhone and the iphone wont boot up, it shutdown after the jailbreak proccess and when i turned it on, it show normal apple logo but then its shutdown again. Btw, my phone is iPhone 5 running on ios 8.1 jailbreak using pangu 1.2.0. Help me please.

    • SIMTester

Try to restart again. If that fails, you need to restore to 8.1 in iTunes and jailbreak again.

  • SIMTester

Cydia has been updated today to 1.1.6. After installing Pangu, you can do a Complete Upgrade in Cydia to fix the passcode/restore from backup boot loop.

  • MilkyMushrooms

But Pangu has a feature where you can restore to old firmwares, doesn’t it?

    • pegger1

No, that’s just to restore to current firmware, 8.1

  • Troels Quistgaard

This might be a noobish question; if i order an iPhone now, that is on say iOS 8.0, would i be able to update it to iOS 8.1 by using an .ipsw-file, even though apple has released 8.1.1?

  • Phíllíp Chum

i need jailbreak from evasi0n!! please!!

  • Miguel Zaragoza Padrao

i want to buy a new ipad, but I have a question: if I buy it after apple release ios 8.1.1, will it come with it or ios 8.1 preinstalled?
