If you’ve ever saved an animated GIF to your iPhone’s Photos app, you’ve probably realized that the animations don’t play as normal. Instead, animated GIFs behave like static images within the Photos app, devoid of any of the animation that makes using GIFs so fun.

GIFViewer is a brand new jailbreak tweak that solves this problem. It, upon installation, allows you to view animated GIFs that are saved to the stock Photos app. Have a look at our video walkthrough inside for a demonstration of how it works.

After installing GIFViewer, there are no settings or options to configure, it just starts working. Find an animated GIF and tap and hold on it to bring up the save image dialogue. Save the image, and open the stock Photos app to navigate to the just-saved image. Instead of seeing a static representation of the GIF animation like with stock iOS, GIFViewer makes it so that the full animation plays from within the Photos app.

Now you can enjoy all of those awesome GIF animations and save them for archival and sharing with friends. GIFViewer is a $0.99 jailbreak tweak, and it’s available on Cydia’s BigBoss repo right now.

    About time!

This is way better than Giffy on iOS 6. I bought the tweak a few days ago.

How? I’ve had giffy, it seemed to work

    • Jeremiah Miller

I’m mad that giffy isn’t updated, I don’t want to have to buy another tweak (I don’t have a credit card so buying tweaks isn’t pleasant)

      • Zack D’Souza

look up a list of sources that have a bootlegged version

    • workin

How’s it different than Giffy, I’ve had Giffy for a bit.
-can anyone tell the difference between Giffy & GifViewer?
EDIT:GifViewer is for newer iOS I assume? I’m still on iOS 6.1.3

I had giffy on my old 4S. Whenever I save a pic to my camera roll with giffy, to make it “move” I always had to swipe to the previous/next photo, and then swipe back to that photo.
With GifViewer I don’t have to do that.

finally..i was waiting long enough for this

unfortunately, when you upload the gif via an app like Imgur, the image is remains static. IIRC, Giffy on iOS 6 retained the animation for upload.

Awesome! been waiting for a GIF tweak for a while (:

  • Kenneth Plas

kinda useful, not 99c useful i think. although this is one of those tweaks, when you see it you’re like ‘well why isn’t that in iOS7 stock version?’

    • on3simpleclick

Apple doesn’t think formats such as GIF & particular Flash, needs to be supported by their iDevices, because they are old formats (even though they are used practically everywhere).

  • I think there is a tweak like this called giffy. It’s 99 cents.

  • Sgt. Faggot

Hahaha, I’m not paying 99¢ for something that is supposed to be free.

  • Steve

At least show some cute GIFs, Jeff. = =

  • Zack D’Souza

can you download GIFs from iFunny or other sources?

  • workin
