Touch ID in action

Just like clockwork, Apple has now updated its website with new material related to today’s announcements. The flagship iPhone 5s has received a substantial upgrade and with much of the attention surrounding its fingerprint scanning feature, the company has made a little video explaining how they integrated the sensitive fingerprint reader into the Home button while giving us an overview of how Touch ID works. I’ve included it for your viewing pleaser right after the break, have a look right now…

Apple SVP of Design, Jonathan Ive, and SVP of Hardware Engineering, Dan Riccio, will take it from here.

What do you think about Touch ID?

Is it a killer iPhone 5s feature or just a fad?

Any news on when I can update to GM?

    • Filip Zíka

i would like to know that too..

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100005439874554 Bob Patin

Don’t know if they’ll release the GM to developers; am I the only one who’s having issues with iOS 7 beta on the iPad 2? Not having them on my iPhone, but I get freezes quite a bit on the iPad.

      • Timothy

The beta is much more buggy on iPad 2 than on my iPhone 4, even. That should change today, because they just released iOS 7 GM, though not OTA.

    • Timothy

GM is out, but not OTA.

    • Prasoon Singh

It’s up on Apple’s dev site.

    • John714

      wtf is a GM?

      • felixtaf

        Gold Master. Pre-final release…

  • stulaw01

Not even close to enough to upgrade from the iphone 5.

I have a feeling the 4 number passcode is quicker than waiting for it to process the fingerprint and unlock the device.

Sounds good in theory but not practical.

    • Joseph

You’d expect face unlock to take a long time, but it actually doesn’t. So I guess we’ll all see.

    • Julio Cesar

It has the power of TWO iPhone 5, it’s not enough?
      What were you expecting? Holograms?

If you don’t think you need all these performance, don’t say that nobody needs. As a developer I’ve seen several new possibilities compared to the iPhone 5.

      • Gregory Kitchens

        agreed.

    • jocastro

it would be way more secure, and how is it quicker? you confuse me, because im pretty sure its quicker then 4 number lock

      • http://theeyesofmarch.wordpress.com/ Timothy

The time for the phone to take to process the fingerprint might be longer than the time it takes to quickly enter a passcode. We shall see!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100005439874554 Bob Patin

How is it not practical? I use a fingerprint scanner on my desktop computer every day, and I suspect this one will work a whole lot better than what I’m using.

You forget the speed improvements and camera improvements too. I have an iPhone 5, and just for the fingerprint scanner alone I’ll be upgrading. I HATE having to type in my password everytime I use my phone, and to use an iPhone these days without one is foolish.

      • Rowan09

I agree I do get annoyed putting in a password, every company is making things easily accessible and that’s what this scanner does.

      • a.no

I’m on the same boat, I’ll hopefully be upgrading from my 4s. Besides, the processing seems a ton faster and look at the other improvements, including camera and the motion processor thing (I forget what it’s called). And for people who believe Apple products are terrible because Apple doesn’t think directly about specs, well, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iKQ8is_tq0I

    • Anthony Petell

Its supposed to learn you fingerprint and get quicker over time. LOL. just like Siri would learn your voice and adapt overtime in the 4S. Well I think there might be some glitches. I’m on the iPhone 5 now and will not be upgrading to this one. Its not worth the money. If I had more then i would definitely be upgrading.

    • Gregory Kitchens

64 bit processor with local data, it doesnt go to a server for verification like siri. it will be much faster than a passcode. people really dont realize what 1 billion transistors means. that is equal to my bulldozer processor in my desktop. it will be VERY fast at things like this.

  • Fevostone

They should of made the screen a little sharper and it defo should of been 32gb 64gb 128gb

    • Rowan09

$499 with contract no thank you.

      • Royce Otero

That’s why they got the 5c for shumps like u

    • Julio Cesar

More resolution for what? To put this in your face looking for pixels?
No need for higher resolution while keeping the screen this size.
Unless you want to lose performance…

      • Rowan09

I agree when the increase the screen size I would want a better screen, for now I’m more than satisfied.

      • Fevostone

        True…!

    • itaydrum

I wanted to have the option of 128GB but once I saw the price of 5C i figured it would not happen.
Because then the two models will be at the same price at 32GB

  • sivkai

So can someone clarify, is the home button clickable?

    • Lance Baker

      Tactile switch. So yes, clickable.

    • Yunsar

I think you can click it, but you don’t have to click for the fingerprint

    • Latinpride011

It still has a physical push affect to go to the home screen and pull up muti task

  • Boss

Amazing they only purchasing this fingerprint company like 2 years ago

    • John714

      cry good

  • Matt Taylor

The metal ring looks ugly don’t you think? They could of at least color coded it…

  • jocastro

im disappointed tho, :( this is probably the only thing that cool about it, im waiting definitely

  • GuyBey0ndC00L

If you have an iPhone 4/ 4S the iPhone 5S is an easy upgrade. If your own an iPhone 5 right now. I can’t but feel iPhone 5S is not worth the money. Finger scanner is a great feature and camera upgrades always welcome. Just not enough, I’m so confused right now.

    • Danuel Carr

I would get it just because of that Graphite. That sh*t is sexy.

      • GuyBey0ndC00L

What Graphite you talking about, I wanna know too. : )

      • Danuel Carr

The new color. I think they call it “space grey” but all the rumors called it graphite so that’s the name that stuck with me. It looks fantastic.

      • Shiv

It’s nice, sure. But 600 dollars can be used in other ways, you know? (a thousand for me in Singapore).

  • Jamie Pettus

Worth upgrading if it works. If they have improved the technology it may be worth it. I read that in general fingerprint scanners are not very reliable.

  • Rowan09

I want this phone. If I can get a good price for my 5 I’m getting the 32GB gold for retail price. I’m leaving AT&T and choosing their AIO service instead to save some money. The fingerprint scanner is a nice addition and want to see the difference with the camera.

  • itaydrum

I do not understand if they would kill the 4s they would kill the 3.5 ” screen and the old connector with one stroke! Really stupid to leave the 4s

    • Prasoon Singh

      I agree.

  • Guest

iOS 7 GM is up on Apple’s dev site. It’s not OTA.

  • Prasoon Singh

iOS 7 GM is up on Apple’s dev site. It’s not OTA like the other iOS 7 betas.

  • John714

No thanks! I’ll just wait another year for the iphone 6. Since my contract with AT&T just expired, I’ll just keep my iphone 4s and switch to straight talk.

  • Gregory D Foster

Touch ID is cool no doubt but does it enhance my user experience? Absolutely not. They need to advance iOS itself, the facelift is nice but c’mon!

    • 3aloo1

The best use of it instead of writing a password use a fingerprint scanner
      TIME SAVING

      • Gregory D Foster

Lol, yah. Not sold. It’s just not enough for me. I upgrade every two years, always skipping the “s”… for good reason.

      • Shiv

Yeah the S upgrades are cool but not worth it. A phone can last 2 years and still be decent. I get a 2 year contract, and my last phone was the 5. So the next will be the 6, which will actually have a bigger hardware change (hoping for bigger screens :D ). The S years are basically software years. Siri for the 4s, etc. Not hardware. And the iPhone 6 will have all these new features and so many more hardware upgrades.

      • 3aloo1

2 year contract for the iphone 5
skipping s is also a good idea

  • Gregory Kitchens

the one thing i still wonder about is, if it automatically unlocks, why does it still say slide to unlock?!? i guess that must be for the fact that they must have the lock screen for devices that dont have the sensor. I would have pulled the lock screen all together for this device if it had been me creating it. of course it would still be present if an unauthorized person tried to unlock it. I do see one problem however. Say I get a 5S and I want to show my friends. I unlock it and hand it to them and walk away for a minute or two and the screen locks for whatever reason. Now my friend cannot unlock it and continue checking it out. They’re gunna think “wow, what a piece of junk, no thanks!

    • Danuel Carr

They couldn’t unlock it if it had a regular pass code on it either so the fingerprint scanner doesn’t change anything in the area. And if your friends think a phone is a piece of crap just because they can’t get past the fingerprint sensor, then you might wanna a: talk some sense into them, or b: try meeting new people

      • Gregory Kitchens

THe difference is, I can tell them the password ahead of time, I cant just willy nilly cut my finger off and hand it to them.
Also, who are you kidding? I don’t actually have any friends! But my point was, human nature is such that, we don’t like things that do not immediately work, nor do most people like things they do not understand.

I tried meeting people once, it was awful. People suck. the world is 40% idiot 40% ignorant, 15% stuck up and conceited and 5% bored these days. I can carry a better conversation with Siri than most people my age.

      • Danuel Carr

I totally feel you on that last part :D

      • Qasim Bashir

u can just set a passcode too, both options are there

  • ExRoot

Interesting. People constantly B itching about privacy. NSA, wire taps etc., but today we’re all excited about fingerprint scans? Did you guys see that vector scan in the video. That will be your real print. FOR Real! You guys are ok with that?

    REALLY?

    • Danuel Carr

Yeah. I mean what’s the government going to do with my fingerprint? It doesn’t change our lives in any way, shape, or form. If they wanna watch me, they can go right ahead, I’m ready. *hikes up miniskirt, puts on lipstick, and pushes out cleavage*

      • Gregory Kitchens

The only disturbing part about this, is that you seem serious, dude. Lmao.

      • Danuel Carr

        I’m just screwin around. :D

  • http://hashuumi.tumblr.com/ Hisham

So the new home button is all capacitive rather than click styled older iPhones…?
    correct me if I’m wrong…

    • Danuel Carr

      No it still clicks.

      • http://hashuumi.tumblr.com/ Hisham

        Oh ok thanks… :)

  • 3aloo1

    Yesss its a KILLLER FEATURE
