best buy store

If you happen to be in the market for a new Mac laptop, you may want to check out your local Best Buy. Not only has the retailer knocked $200 off the prices of its Retina MacBook Pros, but it’s also now offering a free Apple TV with purchase.

The promotion is good for all 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro purchases, and includes a free third-generation Apple TV at checkout—no mail-in rebates or anything. And between that and the aforementioned discount, that’s a savings of at least $300…

It’s also worth noting that Best Buy is running a student discount right now as well, which knocks an additional $100 off the computer if you supply a university-given email address. So essentially, you could get $400 off a MacBook/ATV combo.

For example, the 15-inch MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB flash drive is normally $2,199. But with the current deals going on, you could get it for $1,999 (or $1,899 with student discount) along with a free Apple TV3 (normally $99) at Best Buy.

If you’re interested, you’ll have to hurry. The free Apple TV promo only runs from today through Saturday. It’s worth noting, though, that it’s been a while since Apple has refreshed either product, so new versions are expected to launch sooner than later.

Apple tv’s kinda sucks compared to the Roku 3, and I love most everything Apple.

I use my Apple TV in conjunction with Plex thanks to the hack someone made so with that plus AirPlay it can more a less do anything and everything a Roku can do. As far as content is concerned though, I do agree that the Apple TV needs more, a lot more, perhaps even an AppStore?

      • J. Rockwell

I have had Plex on my ATV with firecore seas0n pass for a LONG time. When running a .mkv file over 6GB on ATV it buffers and stutters constantly. On the Roku you can play a 36GB Prometheus Blu-Ray .mkv on it without a single stutter (that is 6x the file size that ATV has trouble with.) That combined with HBOgo, Hulu+, Amazon Prime, and countless other channels makes the ATV vastly inferior. I think you are dead on with app store, it desperately needs third party apps, and a hardware upgrade as well.

If you had it with firecore then you were using an Apple TV 2. When using the newer Apple TV with the Plex hack (PlexConnect) I have managed to play a wide variety of file formats without any issues.

I dont know about you buy don’t have any problems running 15 gb 1080p mkv from my mac to ATV3 via ‘Beamer’ – ATV3 is connected via ethernet while the Mac via wifi- work just perfect
ATV3 handling the file great and nothing get stuck..
