Apple claims Google Now violates its Siri patents, adds Galaxy S4 to suit

A week ago, news broke that Apple mulled adding Samsung’s latest Galaxy S4 flagship smartphone to its patent infringement case against Samsung Electronics. It’s not terribly surprising then that Apple has now filed a motion asserting that both the Internet giant’s head-turning Google Now feature and Samsung’s Galaxy S4 handset violate its two Siri patents and five other inventions…

Patent expert Florian Müeller specified on his FOSS Patents blog the five patents Apple is asserting against Samsung – including U.S. Patent No. 5,666,502, U.S. Patent No. 5,946,647 and U.S. Patent No. 7,761,414 - and another two Siri-related patents – U.S. Patent No. 8,086,604 and U.S. Patent No. 6,847,959 - used against the Google Now service.

In its original infringement contentions Apple asserted the ’604 and ’509 unified search patents against the Android Quick Search Box. Meanwhile Google has launched Google Now, and Apple wishes to update its infringement contentions accordingly.

Here’s Apple’s filing, embedded as a Scribd document.

13-05-21 Apple Motion to Amend Infringement Contentions

Apple previously claimed Samsung’s Galaxy devices infringe its Siri patents and Judge Lucy Koh back in March greenlit the Siri lawsuit, which involves different patents than the case that went to trial in California last year.

After removing one of the 22 infringing devices and adding the Galaxy S4 added to its second California suit against Samsung, the two parties are expected to duke it out in the courtroom in spring 2014.

Yet again Apple wasting more time in law suits get your ass back to the board room and start creating some new stuff

    • http://twitter.com/Max_Kas Max Kas

Yes because the people who work on the legal side also create new products.

      • Jerry

        LOLLL!^

      • Dylfo

Well if they’re spending less money on law suits they can spend more on innovation sooooooo

      • iBanks

The cost of the lawsuits are the least of their concerns when protecting their materials. Besides… They have plenty money in Ireland.

      • JoshuaHulgan

Yeah, they better be thrifty with that $100 billion…

      • Boss

I see people like Tim Cook in the law suits he’s basically the seal of approval at testing new stuff , I bet Apple’s lawyers could have come up with a better designed iPhone 5 than the same lame guys creating it and the iOS

This infringement should not be tolerated Apple please pull the Google Search app from the ApoStore now!

P.s if you can’t tell I’m being sarcastic

  • http://twitter.com/JacobsLiveCA Jacob S

I am using S4 along with iPhone 5. Siri and S Voice work similarly. So the patent violation must be valid I guess. As far as the phones Apple can’t even come closer to Samsung with its hardware features at least for next 3 generations of iPhones. Whereas the quality is concerned it is just opposite; Samsung can’t even come closer to Apple hardware and app quality for at least next 5 generations of Galaxies.

    • mrloko

but why will apple develope 8 core processor and other stuff when the 2 core A 5 processor can easily run ios without lag.????

      i have seen note 2 n s3 lagging lol

      • http://twitter.com/JacobsLiveCA Jacob S

I have used S3 and you are right, it has lagging. But S4 has no lagging (it is only 2 days that I am using this, so may be I am speaking too early) also apps are downloaded and installed in lightning speed compared to iPhone 5. Not only the processor, but other stuff such as NFC, airwave sensors, IR sensor etc is much added advantages on hardware side. Also I can see why Samsung wants developers to write Apps for Galaxy devices using Samsung’s own SDK. As of now a wonderful piece of hardware is being filled with regular krapdroid applications and thus customers are not able to get the potential of S4′s hardware capabilities.

      • mrloko

lol generally android devices start lagging after a few months..in the start they are smooth

      • Gorgonphone

they are just like PCs al nice on day one then on day 2 things slow way down..lolsad

      • mehrab

Lol really? I had so,e lag out of the box when i started surfing the web

      • Gorgonphone

i tried S4 in store and its till is not as smith as iphone5..sorry

      • mehrab

Oh please my bros gs4 lags compared to my 7 month old iphone 5 at everything open google chrome on both open a few tabs go to websites and such see which performs better you”ll see

      • mehrab

App downloads cud be an issue on the servers or it cud that the same app on android is 5 mb but 15 on ios also installing takes a while

      • mehrab

Most of the features you wont use on a daily basis meither do they work

      • Dan

GS3 lags, I’ll give you that. The Note 2? no way. Been using mine for a few months now, it’s a beast.

      • Cameron Chao

The note 2 with stock UI does lag, and so does the S4, its still a flaw Samsung hasnt done much to fix.

      • Dan

When does it lag for you? The only lag I’ve ever had is due to graphic intensive games. Everything stock is smooth (ie: email/text/phone/camera).

      • mrloko

i have seen it lagging at the first step..that is unlocking the device…beat that

      • Gorgonphone

it still has the low frame rate jittery scrolling issue also..

      • erod434

Too bad that youtube video was on a prototype pre-release build… And its seriously amazing that you fanboys have to deny that its smooth when you don’t even own the device. Are you serious that insecure that you believe that your phone must be the best one out their. I own a gs4 myself and I personally believe its on pair with my iphone five except for in a few apps such as google chrome, but I stick with the stock browser so it doesn’t matter.

      • mrloko

no youtube video man…i am talking about my friends device which i used for a couple of days

      • Gorgonphone

        it lags

      • mehrab

Oh okay……………….. Thats like soo truee……………..
Wattta about other apps? Yeah test it againt safari and see
Every single intensive game flicking thru pictures
Watching vidoes i saw dropped frames but yeah whatever why are you so happy that its on par with a 7 month old phone or shud i say 8?

      • mehrab

Google chrome facebook just about every single app unless its youtube butmsometimes youtube lags too
Oh AND MMAAAJOOORRR ON GOOGLE CHROME AND FACEBOOK ON THE GS4 the international version which my brother got 3 days ago. Your just used to the lag

      • mehrab

Not to mention zooming in and out on webpages zoom in pause then zoom out on your plastic beast lets see what happens lol

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649839720 Raul Henriquez

Guess what all games on iOS never lag

      • Dan

Yeah I don’t give a rats @ss about graphic intensive games, the games that I do play work perfectly (tower defense/angry birds/where my water…).

      • mehrab

You can play those on a 3gs without lag lol those games are cute to us

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649839720 Raul Henriquez

Well good for you, I enjoy 60 FPS on my real racing and enjoy true unreal engine games that run amazing.

      • Dan

Shadowgun/NFS most wanted/Epoch/GTA = no lag, no idea about the rest. Like I said, I prefer to play those types of games on a PC.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649839720 Raul Henriquez

Lmao yeah I like to play PC games too

      • Gorgonphone

the flaw is using android OS android is too cheap and dumb t make their own..lololo

      • Gorgonphone

it lags dude.. you are getting accustomed to lag so you think its normal now..

      • mehrab

        Exactly #wellsaid

      • Dan

you two are so cute, like two idiots in a pod ;)

      • mehrab

Scroll thru your images you”ll see a slight lag you shit face ;)

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649839720 Raul Henriquez

Are you trying to shit talk lmao that’s cute haha…

      • mehrab

Do you see how google chrome or other apps has slow fancy animations? Its to try to hide the lag. But it is still lagyy to ios users

      • Dan

I went from years on an iPhone to android, lag would of shocked me if it was present, what I did notice was that everything was snappy on my Note 2

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649839720 Raul Henriquez

Really! so how do you quit an app on an iPhone, that has become unresponsive, without the multitask switcher, or restarting the phone completely?

        Lets see if you know

      • Dan

What are you, 8? You know what, I’m done arguing with you and those two idiots. What is it about people like you always needing to impose your views on others? Are you so insecure about your phone that you need to prove that it’s the best?

I’ve never said Android is better than IOS, because that would be very close minded of me. I’ve always said that I think android and IOS both have their strengths, and that it falls on the user to decide which best suits him. I’m done wasting my time, I hope you enjoy your iPhone.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649839720 Raul Henriquez

Exactly the response I expected from an idiot like you who has never owned an iPhone. Yet you’re the one imposing. Classic and that makes you look like the 8 year old.

      • Dan

/sigh, shouldn’t even respond but I’m bored at work… I’ve had iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S and currently have iPad 2.

Unresponsive app you say? I either press home button, if that doesn’t work I can keep finger on power button and just do shutdown. If nothing works at all? I press home and power for a while and hard boot. Usually, that will cause me to restart in safe mode so I’ll respring. These steps have always worked, although they have been far and between.

so anyway man, try to accept that some people perfer other things than you ok? I didn’t kick your dog or say your phone sucked. I just dared to say that for my needs, I prefer android.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649839720 Raul Henriquez

How is it not imposing? I don’t come here to hear about android, I have a blog for that. I love android all the way, but I prefer iOS and truly believe its a complete experience. I have a nexus 4 and galaxy S2 and I love them, but they are just not there yet. It’s really apparent when you own both. And the way you quit an app in iOS that’s completely unresponsive is to hold the power button down until you see the shutdown screen and then hold the home button f or 10 seconds.

      • Dan

You don’t own the blog man, people are free to give their opinion. IDB has been posting stuff about android for a while now.

You want to vent, vent the guy who started talking about android in the first place. I have a right to reply to his comment and give my 2 cents.

Coming to an Apple blog and flaming Apple? Then I would understand. I see the good in both products. People like you who have tunnel vision and put down something/someone to feel better about their chosen product are the problem.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1649839720 Raul Henriquez

Never did I say or implied that I did owned it, but this is an iOS blog not and android blog. I’m not putting down android I’m simply stating that there’s a place for that and it’s not here. It’s completely irrelevant. And no you don’t get the same effect because for one you are shutting down the phone and as I described you are only force quitting all apps like on a mac

      • Dan

Well that’s good to know, all those years with IOS devices and I never knew I could do that, thanks.

      • Cameron Chao

        Bring down its notification center.

      • mehrab

        Lol

      • mrloko

try managing all these comments with android like me and you will go mad…using android temp because iphone is at store and in 2 days android has eaten my brains

      • Gorgonphone

androids OS is just laggy by nature.. i can’t see why they can fix it

      • mehrab

No not true actually its very optimised but it”ll take years to get to the level apples optimasation is at atm
Btw apple optimizes even more better on every single major os update

      • Gorgonphone

point is its snot as smooth as it needs to be.. iphone 5 is the smoother phone on earth,..

    • Gorgonphone

lool the S4 just came out yesterday..lol it better be damn powerful. but all the power in the word running android will still be crap

      • mrloko

android will lag with even 30 core processor …lol just saying

  • Gorgonphone

they are both boring as hell.. and far from what they could be sad

  • sl0wCydia

    Why Android devices suck

    1.lag
    2. not all apps are compatible with all Android devices.
    3. most Android phones have pointless and stupid features.
    4. ugly UI
    5. The software you get with the phone you usually stay with. Its very hard to update the software of a Android phone.

    6. most Android phones are made out of cheap hard plastic which makes it a #$%$ phone

Example: dragging a video from the internet to the home screen is a perfect example of a pointless and stupid feature

    • mehrab

And like the devs dont care to optimise the apps for that specific android device with its hardware on board thats a big reason why even the iphone 4s lauches runs the same apps way better then the leading androids on the market

    • mehrab

I have this two friends who were showong off their gs4″s it lagged at every feature air gestures didnt work so well and they did the you know how they smack the back of their phones and exchange pictures yeah so they did that and my friends gs4 slipped out of his hands and fell on the ground and it shattered lol

  • sl0wCydia

on paper most Android devices have a faster processor then Apple devices but are they faster then Apple devices NO

    • mehrab

Yeah and fools on the market are like omg the iphone 5 is a dual core BAHAHAHAHAHHAHA yeah i”ll take that octa core gs4

  • Efdhwifhhi

Ok, I might be reading this wrong, but Apple is suing Samsung for Google Now? That’s golden.
