Google Search for Velox

As we discussed on yesterday’s episode of Let’s Talk Jailbreak, Velox is great, not so much because of what it does right now, but because of the many possibilities it opens up for future add-ons. Now the add-ons have begun to flow into Cydia, and one in particular allows you to search Google without necessitating the launch of the Google app.

Check out our overview of Google Search for Velox inside.

Google Search for Velox 02

As you might expect, the official Google app is needed to take advantage of Google Search for Velox. Once both the app and the jailbreak tweak are installed, all it takes is a simple swipe gesture on the Google app icon to open up the custom Velox search folder.

The custom search folder is a very straightforward search that contains a box to type in your desired search terms. Personally, I’m quite fond of the simplicity of this tweak; it gets straight to the point without being overly annoying or overly designed.

Once your search term is typed into the box and you tap the search button, the Safari browser will open up with your desired Google search. It would have been nice if the tweak contained an option to use the Google app instead, since that’s what you’re using for the custom Velox folder to begin with. Perhaps in a future update.

If you want to try Google Search for Velox then you must already own Velox. If you do, then you can download Google Search for Velox free of charge from Cydia’s BigBoss repo.

Come on iPad version. I need you!

  • Gorgonphone

    coooooooooool

  • Tried it and uninstalled. A very, very basic plugin for Velox

    • Well get ready to see a lot of them just like all the millions and billions of pointless notification centre search widgets…

    • insanj

If you have any suggestions, feel free to let me know.

  • Isa Altintas

    Awesome. Thanks Jeff

  • You can easily use google Chrome as the default browser if you install browser chooser. Also, I would like to see this plugin offer the ability to automatically focus on the search input box and bring up the keyboard for you. I think that would be a great improvement.

    • insanj

I’ll look into it! Didn’t really think of that in the first version, but I see how it could make it even more simple.

  • Not impressed with it. You have to have the app at the top of your phone or else you can’t see the search bar. As well, it doesn’t even open the app, it takes you to Safari. It has potential, just think it was released a little prematurely.

Still in love with Velox. The potential still hasn’t been reached yet.

    • Gorgonphone

yes it was rushed and lame and im removing now..

  • I like this Google Search Velox tweak *because* it’s very basic–and because it uses Safari instead of the Google app you have access to the “search tools,” which are handy to refine searches by time and other factors.

    • Gorgonphone

i wish it opened n folder view like all the other velox tweaks do..

  • Erm, Spotlight just do this… for free.

  • Seems kind of pointless. I keep Google Search in a folder, and you can’t use Velox (as far as I know) from within a folder. Plus, you can just search Google from Spotlight and use Activator to open Spotlight from anywhere on your phone.

  • Velox is currently very buggy! The current version freezes the iPhone and reboots it into safe mode. This is happening for the camera app. Went back to the original release.

    • Gorgonphone

      mine is fine..

  • Sahil

I yet don’t understand the concept of velox.. It makes no sense.. And about google search. U can do that from spotlight search

    • Yeah, it makes no sense for 80 percent of the apps it uses special folders with since opening the app does the same thing with better precision. Still, some are very useful such as setting alarms on/off like in the previews. i believe the developer must focus on things that makes the users to not open the app and something actually useful for such a tweak like this rather than rushing to get every app on the springboard to have a special folder

  • Gorgonphone

umm i dont want this to just open the real google app i want it in a folder view lease.. this suuucks..

  • House4life

The more news on velox i read, the more it burns me that theres no ipad version yet :p

    • That’s what I’m feeling wtth auxo. And we all know what this blog always likes to talk about :p

  • It’d be nice if it opened the search in the google’s search app

  • What do you use to make the GIF?? Thanks!

  • Reinaldo Simões

I’d die to see Google Now implemented in Velox. Or, instead of popping out the tiny window, it’d open Google Now immediately. I prefer it over having the plain google search button.

    • insanj

Would be an immense amount of coding… I’d try it, but I feel like it would take half a second longer to pull them up using the app, and they wouldn’t look even remotely as good in a Velox folder.

  • This would be even better if it could open the voice search with one flick

  • SweKiwi

Not very userfriendly though. Try it out a few times and see if you don’t prefer opening the app first, which by the way is grandious fast and beautiful.

  • Damian Lillard

Dope as all get out, and quite simple. two thumbs up.

  • phatmanjr.

The devs need to add this for Google Chrome, please.
