The anticipation leading up to Apple’s next iPhone announcement has reached a fever pitch. Apple geeks everywhere are more excited than ever about what Apple has in store for its beloved smartphone next month.

Will the next iPhone be the iPhone 5 or the iPhone 4S? Will Apple announce the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 4S at once? Do you plan on upgrading from your current iPhone? These are the questions that are being asked…

Mashable has published an interesting infographic, courtesy of AYTM and PaidViewpoint, about who is planning to upgrade to the next gen iPhone. A study was conducted of 1,000 US iPhone owners aged 18 years and older. Some interesting facts were uncovered about iPhone users and who’s more likely to upgrade this Fall.

Some highlights:

  • More than 75% of iPhone owners are still on AT&T.
  • More than 80% of iPhone owners are still locked to one carrier.
  • 11.7% of iPhones on AT&T and Verizon are jailbroken.
  • Nearly 80% of iPhone owners still enjoy a grandfathered unlimited 3G data plan.
  • The iPhone is mostly used for texting.
  • The number one reason people want to upgrade to a new iPhone is for better battery life.
  • A redesigned iPhone is the least wanted feature for the iPhone 5.
  • Nearly half of current iPhone owners plan to upgrade within six months of the next iPhone’s release.

Do you plan on upgrading to the next iPhone?

Since i own a iPhone 3GS with a prepaid dataplan with no real benefits regarding free calls etc, i am really looking forward to buy my new iphone with a unlimited dataplan and free calls to contacts with the same carrier for non less then 39CHF (SwissFranc). 🙂

I’m currently using htc evo. I have always loved iphones and plan to be one of the first to get iphone 5. Hopefully it will be a great design and better battery life.

Not this time! I been upgrading iphone’s since the 3g. This time im trying android and will probably sell my factory unlocked iphone 4

    • David

How did you get it factory unlocked? Was it from eBay like that? Or did you pay somebody to do it?

      Just wondering.

  • Justin

11.7% are jailbroken? LOL. I believe that number is closer to 18-20%.

    Upgrade…in January .

I’m surprised that battery life was the number one requested feature. I feel like the battery does just fine on the iPhone 4 and has never really been a major problem with virtually all of the iPhones, unlike Android (my girlfriend has a thunderbolt and she can only go about 7-8 hours on a charge). Also, I love how people want no lengthy contracts and unlimited data, two things Apple has no control over, goes to show how little people understand.

upgrading next year. really happy with the iPhone 4

  • Dylan

Upgrade next time. Since I have to pay for my own phone. I’m 15.

  • Jasper

Upgrading since i have (had actually) an iPhone 3gs, it’s broken though.

  • mo

goddamit we need 4g LTE in the new iphone!

  • Max

Since the first iPhone came out I’ve been on line for first day. Nothing is going to change for me. Apple has me hooked. No matter what comes out, I’m in. The iPhone is a great product. Sure it always dissapoints in some areas but no other phone could match it.

Jon, name an Android or Win7 powered device to compare to……

  • Tbv

Will upgrade to another factory unlock model. But I will not be one of the first ones to camp out and wait at the Apple store.
I am REALLY hoping for a 4 inch screen and 1MB of RAM on this newer model. I do not care if it is 4G or not, I cannot get 4G where I live any way.

  • mersim

    GB dude 😛

  • I won’t be upgrading the iPhone 4 ticks all my boxes and I don’t feel the next one is going to a major leap from what I got now

  • Scaredy Shroom

Lol @ people deciding when it hasn’t even been announced.

  • Max Bl.

Just sold my i4 for 460€ (621$), can’t wait for the i5 to come 😉 but i miss my iPhone…

    Greetings from Germany 😀

I’m not. There is nothing wrong with the iPhone 4. Plus I’m not on a contract nor do I wish to be so if I get one it will have to be from Apple for however many hundreds of pounds they will sell it for. The iPhone 4 will get iOS anyway.

Saying that a larger screen would be good for my sausage fingers.

I’ll wait for the iPhone 6. I think the leap from 4 to 6 will be as big as the leap from the 3G to 4

  • Karma32

Only if it has a bigger screen. At least a 4 incher or very close to that, if it doesn’t I’m definitely not getting the iPhone 5. The iPhone puny screen factor is feeling cramped against the othe bigger screened phones. Once you start using a 4.0-4.3 inch screen smart phone, it’s hard going back to the iPhone 4.

I hope Apple plays catch up with the iPhone 5 screen form factor

  • No point in upgrading to a 4s if its not gonna be that different hardware wise. Im cool with the 4 but I would consider the 5

  • Ru folk

I don’t care since I have an ipad2,not an iPhone.
The reason for that I’m waiting iphone5 is the iOS 5 will come out and finally, the jailbreakers will release their jailbreaks for 4.3.5 and a5.
And this fact makes me feel myself frustrated.

  • gabe

Im waiting for the 6th gen of iPhone. it seams silly to just keep upgrading as soon as a new phone comes out. consumerism much ?
