Those of us old enough to remember the Sega CD, or Mega CD (depending on where you happen to live), will readily admit that it holds a special place in our hearts. The Sega CD was arguably ahead of its time, and eventually died off with the arrival of competing products from Nintendo and Sony, not to mention Sega’s own Saturn.

Before it was killed, the Sega CD did survive long enough to give us one of the better Sonic games to come to any platform since the original release.

With that in mind, I can perhaps be forgiven for squealing like a schoolgirl when I say that Sega is bringing Sonic CD to iOS…

Not only is Sonic CD coming to our favorite mobile platform, but it’s also getting a touch-specific makeover, thanks to a clever independent developer who, it seems, did all the hard work on a conversion SDK. Details are sketchy, but the developer, Christian Whitehead, may have received a bit of love from Sega as a result of his Retro Engine.

Check out the video Whitehead released a couple of years ago showing his hard work, and we can only imagine how much better it is now!

I defy anyone who played the original to not get at least a little excited by the prospect of getting their hands on that!

Sega has also provided a teaser trailer to really get the juices flowing. The only bad news? We have to wait until Christmas to play it.

Are you old enough to remember Sonic CD? What other games would you like to see ported to iOS using the Retro Engine?

Will it have all the animation scenes?

I wish there was a Saturn emulator for the iPhone, i’d love to play Sega Rally and Daytona Racing on the iPhone, I could never get the PSX emulator to work properly, the games were always in strange parts that never joined together properly and there was fuck all info anywhere on how to get them to play, not even on the Rom sites.

Saga rally …now your talking ..

It’ll suck.. Just like all the other ported sonics.. They put no effort into making throw it on ios to make a quick buck then abandon the game, no updates to fix controls, no updates to enhance experience or anything.. Just you wait and see… They’re just out to make a buck before sonic completely dies…

Sonic is much better on the Genesis emulator, much the same as the SNEs 1, any game ported to iOS that was available on either of them is way better purely because of the Wii remote, if there’s 1 thing I hate about mobile gaming is covering the screen with controls, all helps to ruin any quality game imo.

what would I like to see ported to iOS? legend of Zelda: ocarina of time

I would love to see Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles, not each game separately but the combined version. Originally you could plug in Sonic 3 into the top of Sonic & Knuckles cartridge and play from the beginning of one game and got through to the end of the other game (combining them into one big-ass game). It was cool that you could play as Knuckles in Sonic 3 (and through to Sonic & Knuckles) and you can play as Tails in Sonic & Knuckles (as long as u got through Sonic 3 to get to Sonic & Knuckles). Another bonus was that each playable character was able to go past “Super Mode” and get “Hyper Mode”.

    New super Mario bros

+1, the old SNES versions are the reason I got the emulator, Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart etc, the best games you can play on the iPhone imo, it’s a shame the N64 emulator never seemed to work on 4.x.x.

Super excited, I hope it features the original Japanese/European soundtrack. The music if the video is from the Japanese/European soundtrack for Wacky Workbench Bad Future. So hoping this some indication that all of us in the North America will finally get to hear the game as it was meant to be heard.
