A new handy feature that made its way to iOS 5 is the ability to launch the camera directly from the lockscreen. Have you ever wanted to take a picture rapidly but missed the perfect shot because it took you too long to unlock your phone and launch the camera app? No more of that.

Now you can launch the camera app more quickly by simply hitting the home button twice while on the lockscreen. This will bring the camera icon. Hitting this icon will launch the camera app…

Additionally, you can now use the volume buttons to snap a picture. Really convenient too.

What do you think of this feature?

  • BLiNK

i wish there was an option to keep it on the lockscreen. maybe on the next build..

  • AMB

You forgot to add that even if there’s a passcode set, you’ll still be able to launch the cam from the lockscreen but won’t have access to the photo library.

    • iXanczy

      True…

      • yes you can.
        launch cam>corner square pic>home buton>pictures …yup

      • Sebastiab

No. If you have the iPhone locked with a Password, pictures are not shown to you until you unlock

  • Sunil

It is not present in my iOS 5. Am I missing something?

      Does not work on 3GS

      • Wellington

        It works on mine…

    • Larry

You have to double tap the home button.

    • Dino

I too thought it didn’t work on the 3GS, but as Larry says, you need to double-tap the home button and it works on the 3GS too! 🙂

  • CameraButtons already let’s you use the volume buttons for the shutter and other options. You can also enable the buttons to launch the camera from the lock screen. Nothing new here

    • Joe

But it wasn’t well integrated into the os, and caused no slowdown, like most jailbreak tweaks do.

  • XepptizZ

Ah, the replacement for camerabuttons, took em long enough.

  • Ben

My only worry is when the iPhone is in the pocket and you keep accidentally pressing the camera button.

    • Joe

No an iPhone only reacts to your skin.

      • Rory

surpisingly it actually works with other types of fabrics i’ve noticed. I’m an avid golfer and it works with with my golf glove on. Don’t know the fabric exactly.

New iphone must have additional button apart from the volume button for taking pictures?

  • Chris

does not work on iPad 2 can anyone else confirm this

    • dfgbhfdv

I think its cuz ipads have the slideshow thingy.

  • i am waiting for untethered jailbreak of iOS 5

  • Listen everybody….. DOUBLE TAP YOUR HOME SCREEN BUTTON WHEN YOU IPHONE IS LOCKED TO OPEN YOUR CAMERA!!!

  • scott

I don’t see it on my iPhone 4 After updating to iOS5.

  • George

Is there a way to permanently leave the lockscreen with the camera button?

  • Bill

Hmm .. I’ve tried this on IOS5… seems to bypass the lockscreen on my phone
    – Dounble click home button when on lockscreen .. get camera symbol
    – press camera symbol, get camera
    – Press home button .. back to homescreen .. all apps available
    Is this just me?

    • Spritt

My iPhone IS set with password, but tapping the camera button from the lock screen and then pressing the home button let’s you enter the phone without giving the password. That must be a bug?!?
