Even though Comex said he wasn’t sure he was going to be able to meet his Christmas deadline for an untethered jailbreak, it does seem we’ll get a nice gift from the Dev Team after all. According to the Team’s blog, an updated version of RedSn0w that implements a “backup plan” will be released and will deliver an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1.

Things seem to be rushed a bit as the Dev Team is looking for beta testers to run this RedSn0w untethered jailbreak and make sure every bug is taken care of before the public release…

Feel like helping? Here is what you need to know:

(If you have an iPhone 3G, or an old-bootrom ipt2g or iPhone 3GS, you already have an untethered jailbreak!  Just use the latest public redsn0w.)

To keep things manageable, this will be a Mac-only test program.  We also request that any volunteers *NOT* need the ultrasn0w unlock (in case things go very wrong).

Right now, the “backup plan” requires that you have the 4.2b3 IPSW on your Mac, and that Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH hashes.  Please don’t pirate that 4.2b3 IPSW!  (We’re also working on a way that this technique might apply to all those with 4.1 IPSWs, but that’s not the first goal right now.)

If you fit all the above qualifications, please follow @redsn0w_testers on twitter for announcements, and use the comments section here for feedback.

The good news obviously is that we’ll get an untethered jailbreak this Christmas. The not-so-good news is that this jailbreak is just a “backup plan” that might be rushed out of the door to meet the Christmas deadline. However, I do trust MuscleNerd and the Dev Team to give us something that has thoroughly been tested.

This RedSn0w update will ship sometimes this weekend. It can be as early as tonight or as late as Sunday night.

What are you going to do? Will you try this untethered jailbreak right away, or will you wait a couple days to make sure all the kinks have been worked out?

  • Rightaway for sure .

“If you have an iPhone 3G, or an old-bootrom ipt2g or iPhone 3GS, you already have an untethered jailbreak”

I thought only old 3gs’s have had an untethered jailbreak???

    • Z

“… or an old-bootrom ipt2g or iPhone 3GS…” meaning that both and ipt2g and iPhone 3GS have to have old boot. The newer models like MC are not supported.

  • Burge

All I need is a Mac ..just might have to go and see my mate and use his …hohoho..

  • Emma

Untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak 3Gs??? Where? XD

  • Mike

This still involves putting your idevice into DFU mode though, correct? Unfortunately my iPhone is jacked up enough where I can’t do it. The plastic surrounding the power button is cracked but it still works but DFU mode does not. Reboot works maybe 45% of the time but only if I am lucky. I even asked 2 supposed “DFU mode Apple geniuses” who lost $20 each to me saying “You are just doing it wrong” DFU mode ALWAYS works and will work every time and we can prove it! Haha! They spent literally 8 hours staring at my phone trying it to get into DFU like the monkeys around the obelisk in 2001! Yes Rob Y. and Joe D. you are certified morons and not certified Apple geniuses!! Hey, at least I won something from this mess! When JailbreakMe 3.0 is finally released hopefully that works I don’t have to do the DFU dance anymore.

You can still put your iPhone into DFU mode by using a UNIX terminal. Just boot into a Linux distribution of your choice, install the open-source USB daemons

    • Z

@Mike have you tried searching for other options of putting your phone in DFU mode? I think I came across a couple of methods. Give it a google and hope that christmass miracles do happen 😉

      • Taylor Harris

As Z said, there are many other methods to place your iPhone in DFU mode besides just using the default buttons on the phone. If your iPhone is currently jailbroken, try searching Cydia with the query, “DFU” and see what you find ;). Once in DFU, just update your phone with the redsn0w patched firmware file.

Wot does it mean by 4.2b3 hashes how do u get those?

    • Taylor Harris

4.2b3 hashes are unique alphanumeric sequences generated by your iPhone along with it’s corresponding firmware that Apple uses to dictate the update and restore process on your phone. These hashes are also known as SHSH blobs, which, if you have either 4.1 or 4.2.1 installed and jailbroken and you’ve confirmed you’d like Cydia to keep them on file for you, there should be no need to acquire this hash code, as it is already secured on a third party server allowing you to downgrade if you ever prefer to do so. Does that answer your question?

      • Taylor Harris

And, there are hashes for every firmware that Apple release. A 4.2b3 hash would just be the sequence generated when using the third beta of iOS firmware on your iPhone. Likewise, a 4.1 hash is generated when you install iOS 4.1 on your iPhone.

Thanks all for the help, just for clarification, here’s the deal with my phone ~ I have a MB Model 3G iPhone and it WAS jailbroken and then the impatient guy that I am, decided to update it to the latest firmware 4.2.1 (8C148) through iTunes and it became restored to the factory settings. From that point on I am unable to get it into DFU mode to jailbreak it again. I have tried every and all methods to get it into DFU mode as well as actually taking it to supposed “experts” but it will simply not go into DFU. I know there are several people out there who will say IMPOSSIBLE!! IT ALWAYS WORKS!!I In response I must say, just because you are not experiencing the problem doesn’t mean that it does not exist.I also must say I have gotten into DFU fairly easily in the past so that is why this is so frustrating to me, I know that it should work! The odd thing is it will not even reset if it is connected via usb to my or any computer in iTunes, If I close iTunes or disconnect the usb and I can reset it just fine. Very odd. Anyway until JailbreakMe 3 is out I think I will try the UNIX idea. Thanks again.

    • Taylor Harris

No problem Mike. Haha… An Apple Genius really just means a technological moron. Working for Apple is like being a citizen of a totalitarian ‘1984’ government where Big Brother is in charge. You know what they want you to know, not what you’re capable of knowing. You can also try restoring your iPhone to your current firmware again with iTunes and see if maybe the DFU function was somehow corrupted the last time you updated.

  • Mike

I have a 3g and have updated to 4.2.1 and jailbroke and unlock it using redsnow and ultrasnow. I tried to restore it and now im stuck in the connect to itunes screen. I know i screwed up because the unlock required me to use the ipad baseband. can anyone help me fix this?

    • Brandon

Tried restoring it on another computer through iTunes then backing up as a new phone? It will lose ya unlock n jailbreak but you can always put it back on again. Once you’ve restored it on the other computer… put it on you main one and restore from a backup to get all your contacts, app info etc….

      • Mike

gave it a try on a different computer but i still get “iphone failed to restore (code 1015)” then the phone goes back into recovery mode, same as i did on the main computer. what else can i do?

  • Boal

i have one Iphone 4 with 4.2 unlock and new. What can I do to jailbreak it?

  • JAK

Cool, no rush… To get it just right….. 🙂

  • Almymon

    • Burge

Look for 1015 error fixer on the net.. When iTunes says 1015 error , the firmware is no your phone and all you need to do is run 1015 error fixer to boot it past the connect to iTunes screen on your phone

  • ExoSan

Come on! When it will be realeased :S

  • LegitGuy

Just got my iphone4 and just rung through to unlock it through itunes.
Downloading the latest iTunes… am I safe to update to the latest update now that the jailbreak is this close?
Or should I not update it through iTunes and keep it on 4.1?
    My baseband is at 2.xxxx
