QuickPwn 2.1 Guide & Tutorial

Sebastien, Sep 19, 2008

UPDATE: This post in kind of outdated since firmware 2.2 became available. I wrote new tutorials on how to jailbreak iPhone 2.2 with QuickPwn and how to unlock iPhone 2.2 with QuickPwn.

UPDATE 2: I closed the comments for this post. If you have any question about QuickPwn, please ask in the forum.

This guide will show you how to use QuickPwn 2.1 to jailbreak your iPhone. This tutorial is for PC users. If you use a Mac, you may want to refer to QuickPwn tutorial for Mac OS X or PwnageTool 2.1 Tutorial for Mac OS X.

This QuickPwn 2.1 tutorial will be short as I have already posted a QuickPwn guide before.

Before starting, make sure you have downloaded the latest version of iTunes. Also make sure you are currently running firmware 2.1 (thanks Tim for pointing that out!). Plug your iPhone and make sure iTunes has detected it. If you’re iPhone is already jailbroken, you may want to remove all the apps that you have downloaded from Cydia. Certain applications such as Winterboard, Categories and more cause trouble. You will be able to reinstall them later.

Supports 2.1 firmware with the unlocking and jailbreaking of iPhone 1st generation (2G) device. Supports the jailbreaking of iPod Touch 1st generation device and iPhone 3G. Does not support the unlocking of iPhone 3G or jailbreaking of second generation (n72ap based) iPod Touch.

Note that you are pwning your iPhone at your own risk… Success is not guaranteed!

  1. Create a folder called “QuickPwn” on your desktop. Download your appropriate iPhone firmare from here. Also download the QuickPwn 2.1 from here and place it. Place these files in the newly created QuickPwn folder on your desktop. If you want to unlock your iPhone (only works with iPhone 2G), download the Bootloader 3.9 & 4.6 Files.
  2. Extract QuickPwn zipped file.
  3. Launch QuickPwn and select your iPhone version.
  4. You will be asked to select your iPhone firmware. Select the firmware your downloaded in Step 1.
  5. If the firmware you selected is valid, QuickPwn will show a green checkmark. Click Continue.
  6. You will then have the opportunity to select Cydia, Installer and to choose a custom boot logo. You have to select Cydia. You may also choose to install Installer. Click Next.
  7. You will now have a message saying that you are ready to launch the QuickPwn process in a new Window. Click Go.
  8. You will then be asked to power off your iPhone and press Enter once it has been turned off.
  9. QuickPwn 2.1 will now help you put your iPhone into DFU Mode (aka recovery mode). Read the instructions carefully then type in Y for YES and press Enter.
  10. You will be asked to hold down the Power button for 5 seconds. Then you will have to also hold down the Home button for 10 seconds without letting go of the Power button. At the end of 10 seconds you will need to release only the Power button.
  11. After a few seconds of holding down just the Home button QuickPwn will detect the your iPhone in DFU mode and start performing some “operations”. After 8 operations are performed QuickPwn will tell you to “Please wait while your iPhone is Jailbroken”. Press any key to continue.
  12. Your iPhone will display a turning wheel and in a few minutes will be jailbroken!

If you have a 2G iPhone and would like to unlock it simply install and run BootNeuter from Cydia.

If this post was helpful, please DIGG it! Thanks.

Ok my 2.1 is JB and perfect for me but how do I use Quickpwn to just update the boot logos which is all I want to do

Please advise I can not find the instructions to just change boot logos

    Thanks

  • Tim

Be careful with the above instructions. They don’t say anything about upgrading to 2.1 first. The first screen of QuickPwn states that it is not designed to upgrade your iphone, so you definitely should upgrade to 2.1 before running QuickPwn.

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

@Tim – thanks for pointing that out. I just added it to the tutorial. I will also write a tutorial for how to jailbreak from upgrade vs restore

  • Victor Chavez

Ok to understand this I first need to update my 1.1.4 firmware of my 2G Iphone from Itunes to 2.1 correct? no hacked firmware ? then run QuickPwn and load again the clean firmware ? Could someone confirm this ?

  • Rex

    Sebastien,
I have the 2g iphone jail broken only, using ziphone.
Can I upgrade through itunes to 2.1 and then run Quickpwn?
Thanks for any advise you might be ale to share.

@Victor and @Rex – To use this guide as is, yes, you have to upgrade to 2.1 through iTunes first. However, I am currently writing a tutorial on how to update from an older firmware without having to restore. If you can wait a couple hours, it will be online.

BUT, since you’re both running very old versions, i’d still recommend upgrading from a restore. Start from scratch. Take a piece of paper and write down the name of all the apps you have.

  • Victor Chavez

I only have appz KB installed in my Iphone by now because las time I tried to upgrade phone to 2.0 using QuickPwn 2.0 leave the phone at the end with the pineapple screen and stuck there so I need used Ibrick to comeback the phone from that state and restore clean again to 1.1.4 firmware.

Thanks Sebastien for taking the time to re-write a tutorial for users like Rex and me that we are still using old firmwares like 1.1.3 or 1.1.4. If you could write it the more explicit way (like teaching a 10 year old boy ) many will apreciate it.

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

@Victor and @Rex – OK guys, I have bad news. I am just realizing you won’t be able to use my technique. You have to be at least on 2.0. My recommendation is to restore to a clean 2.1 and then follow this guide. Sorry….

  • Victor Chavez

You mean by restore is: selecting the restore in Itunes 8 version load the 2.1 Iphone firmware and then load QuickPwn 2.1 and then again select the clean 2.1 firmware and continue the instructions ?

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

@Victor – yes, exactly. Once you’ve restored to a clean 2.1, you will be able to follow the directions on this page

  • Victor Chavez

Doing the clean restore in itues 8 do I need to put the phone in DFU ?

  • http://www.sebastienpage.com Sebastien

@Victor – no, don’t worry about that yet. Restore to 2.1 first then follow this guide. Going to bed. Have to get up early. We’re moving out tomorrow!

@everyone – have you checked this blog from your iPhone? It has a sick mobile integration that makes it look awesome and easy to navigate on the iPhone.

  • Dean

Do you have to have iTunes running during the pwning process or do you have to terminate all itunes/apple processes?

  • Ruben

Does this work for ipod touch 2.1?

  • Victor Chavez

    MY STATUS

QuickPwn 2.1 successfull Just like Sebastien said “RESTORE” to firmware 2.1 “NOT UPDATE” If you have a 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 yeah It took a while don’t worry took me like 10 minutes or a little more if you feel it hangs doing the restore don’t worry take a while don’t panic and follow Instructions
I stand up and applaud because it worked for me. Just a note Sebastian you forgot to put the Bootloaders download link in case somene clicks the option Unlock.

100% Works people no error 6 no errro 1006 NOTHING ALL WORKING fine.

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

    @Ruben – read the post!!!

@Victor – Congrats my friend! Yes, sorry I didn’t think about adding the Bootloaders because I don’t have to unlock. I edited the post and added them.

AMAZING!!! Brilliant work. I was running 1.1.1 and have upgraded to 2.1, this is brilliant!!! Just to share with all those who are running old firmware versions know … I backed up my data with older itunes, then downloaded 1.2.0 firmware and itunes 8. Now upgrade itunes to version 8, shift+restore your iphone to firmware 1.2.0 (this will take a lot of time, mine took 20-25 minutes). Now the phone will be in Activate iPhone mode. Run quickpwn 2.1 and jailbreak your phone. It will take around 10-15 minutes as well. Now your iphone is jailbroken but NOT unlocked. Configure your wireless and install Bootneuter from Cydia. Run Bootneuter and enable neuter and unlock options. It will take some 10 minutes and your phone will be unlocked and jailbroken.

    I’m so happy!!!

I have one question though. My iPhone shows less space now, the one that was supposedly allocated by Cydia/Installer. Can I get it back?

  • giovanni

I dont know if this was just my computer doing this but, when i run quickpwn and select custom bootlogo and click next quickpwn freezes and crashes but, then when i dont select custom bootlogo, if worked perfectly fine.
    Anyone else get this problem?

    Also, successfully jailbroke 2.1!

  • James

I am new to this so please help clarify. I just got my iPhone 3G still at 2.0.1 and have itunes 8.0. So I have to update using itunes to 2.1 first, then follow the quickpwn instructions as you have above to jailbreak my phone. my questions are
    1. what happens to the applications that are already installed on my phone. do i sync my phone first to back up before running the quickpwn application and after the phone is pawned, will the applications be lost and i have to load it again?
    2. if for some reason the pwning process does not go accordingly and the phone fw gets messed up, is it a simple restore from itunes to get the phone back to factory settings?

last question, i downloaded but not installed the 2.1 firmware using itunes, anyone knows what directory and the file name that itunes stores it in? Thanks for your help.

  • James

oh, do i still need to d/l the 2.1 firmware from the link above if my phone is already updated to 2.1? If i don’t need to d/l then what about in step 3&4 above how would i be able to browse to the 2.1 firmware or does quickpwn automatically look for it on my computer.

  • ashvagan

@James, you will have to download 1.2 firmware

  • mike

ok i have an 1st gen. iphone running on 2.1 unlocked but not jailbroke. If i run QuickPwn will i lose the apps i have installed via app store? Also my music, videos, ringtones, and contacts?

  • Pop

im having a little issue with the unlock here. i have a 2g iphone. the jailbreak seemed to have gone well, i saw cydia and those other new icons when the phone rebooted and the main screen loaded. however, when i put my tmobile sim card in, my iphone gave me a message ‘different SIM detected, please connect to itunes.’ i cannot access the home page with this tmobile sim. what can the issue be? i ran the bootloader and unlock as stated

  • Pop

    ^problem solved

unlocking had to be done with the tmobile sim card in the phone

  • Cameron

I keep getting an error 1602?

    Please help.

  • Ruben

    @ Cameron
Just google this error and you get

    Issue

Or when trying to restore your iPod touch in iTunes, you may see the following message:

The iPod “[username]” could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1602)

    Products affected

    * iPhone
    * iPod touch
    * iTunes 7.4.3 or earlier

    Solution

Completely remove iTunes and Apple Mobile Device support and then reinstall iTunes 7.5 or later.

    hopes this will help

  • jeffneon

Everything was ok..quickpwn apps installed. Then some apps would not show up when trying to reinstall. SO, I
    1.restored original 2.1
    2. repawned
    3. restored backup to get my contacts back.
When I then tried to installed some cracked apps, I got the message “appname was not not installed because it couldn’t be verified”
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • allumsdm

Thanks a lot!!! Luckily i did not encounter any problem jailbreaking my Ipod Touch 1st gen. Tnx again!

  • James

after jailbreaking, can we still use itunes to download official apps from the apple store?

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

@James – yes, you can still do everything after jailbreaking

  • teras

Hi, your guide is great but I am a bit confused. I have an ipod touch 1G. Why do I need to download the 2.1 firmware since I am already running it in the ipod? I’m asking this because earlier today I run quickpwn just to see if it recognized my touch and I saw that it had already found the firmware and the green checkmark was there. I didn’t have to browse for it because it was there and I didn’t downloaded it before. Do I have to?

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

@Teras – you don’t have to but you may want to do it, just in case it asks for it.

  • teras

    Wow that was fast!!! :)
Thank you very much Sebastien. Very good work.

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

@Teras – if you reallly want to thank me, please DIGG this story (button at the top righ of this post). Thank :-)

  • teras

    Done! Thanks again. :)

  • kevin

    quickpwn.exe will not open
“the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click on ok to terminate app”
any suggestions on how i can get it working?

does this work for Australian iPhones ??

  • s

I have 1st gen 1.1.4 upgrade to 2.1, JB and unlocked, bought in the US
Will this work overseas with local SIM card?

When i upgraded to 1.1.4 I had to install timschuerewegen’s app support patch (to prevent dialer from crashing) to make it work in Asia. Does anyone have any experience with this?

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

    @Dave – yes, of course

@s – If you already have a jailbroken and unlocked iphone, why would you go through the jailbreak process again???

  • Jeff

I’d like to echo Dean’s earlier question:

Do you have to have iTunes running during the pwning process or do you have to terminate all itunes/apple processes?

  • http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/ Sebastien

@Jeff-QuickPwn will close iTunes when necessary

  • Roland

    @ Sebastien
Thanks a lot for the tutorial pal, I succesfully upgraded from 2.0.1 to 2.1!
