Rumor: Sony tapped to provide in-cell displays for next iPhone

AppleInsider points to a new report from the Taipei Times today claiming that Sony has been tapped to manufacturer displays for Apple's upcoming smartphone, joining Sharp, Toshiba Mobile and LG.

The most interesting part of the report is that these display panels are going to be using in-cell technology, something we touched on a bit last month, as it could have major implications for the handset...

Poll: should the next iPhone have a bigger screen?

With Android devices typically sporting displays measuring between 4.3 and 4.8 inches diagonally (and beyond) and the usually credible Wall Street Journal throwing its weight behind recent reports asserting a four-inch iPhone, we're eager to learn about your take on this drama.

Would you prefer the next iPhone to sport the same 3.5-inch display as prior iPhones? A four-inch iPhone, you say? How do you feel about a monstrous 4.8-inch iPhone?

How about an iPhone with a bendable display?

A report out this morning from Far East suggested Apple could be interested in adopting Samsung’s new flexible OLED screens, presumably for use in iPads, iPhones and iPods. The South Korean conglomerate last year supplied Apple with nearly $8 billion worth of processors, NAND flash chips and screens for iOS devices.

Now, Samsung has reportedly received a “huge” number of orders for flexible OLED displays and supposedly Apple is among the phone makers interested in this technology. An iPhone with a flexible display, anyone? Just a pipe dream, you say? Bear with me for a second, there's more to this than meets the eye...

DisplayMate CEO says Apple settled for Plan B with new iPad

CNET is out with a new report this week, which highlights some interesting comments made by DisplayMate's CEO Raymond Soneira. The company is in the video diagnostics business, calibrating and testing displays for manufacturers.

Anyways, according to Soneira, the iPad that Apple unveiled earlier this year was actually Apple's "Plan B" for the product. It seems that the company's "Plan A," a slimmer, lighter tablet, required technology that just wasn't ready in time...

Apple still working on haptic feedback for iOS devices

Remember the last-minute rumor that Apple was going to integrate Senseg's haptic feedback into its third-generation iPad? The theory, which surfaced just hours before Apple's iPad event, never materialized. But that doesn't mean it won't happen.

9to5Mac points to a new patent application from the Cupertino company, discovered by PatentlyApple, regarding haptic feedback. The filing covers a technology that is described as a "wildly intelligent multi-tiered haptics system..."

Rumor: Apple could use in-cell touch panels for thinner, lighter future iPhones

DigiTimes is out with a new report today claiming that it has learned that Apple is looking to adopt in-cell touch panels for future iPhones — possibly even this year's model. As usual, the information in the report is attributed to supply chain chatter.

Why is this a big deal? Well, if it's true, it could make future iPhones significantly thinner. Unlike on-cell panels, which Apple uses in its current handsets, in-cell panels combine touch sensors and color filters into one layer, making the touch panel much thinner...

A scenario for an iPhone with a 4-inch display

Even though we are likely a good 6 months away from seeing Apple's next iPhone in the flesh, we are already hearing tons of gossip regarding possible new features. One rumor in particular, an all-new 4-inch display, seems to be surfacing rather consistently.

Folks in the Apple community have been postulating the existence of a 4-inch iPhone for more than a year now. And after more than two years with the iPhone 4 design, and over 5 years with the 3.5-inch form factor, many think the handset is ripe for a change...

Rumor: 7-inch iPad to feature slim bezel display

Apple has been rumored to unveil a 7-inch iPad for years now, and we most recently heard the Kindle Fire competitor is set to launch sometime this fall. Earlier this month, leaked Samsung documents helped tighten up some of the rumors.

Today, Asian publication Digitimes is reporting that the 7-inch iPad will feature a slim bezel display, that will bring less space between the display and outside of the device...

Rumor: 7-inch ‘iPad mini’ launching in Q3

A 7-inch iPad has been in the rumor-mill for quite awhile, but has yet to see the light of day. Many have said Apple will never choose to go with a 7-inch display and will continue to opt with its 10-inch iPad -- which is currently the top selling tablet. However, many reports indicate a 7-inch (or 8-inch) version of the iPad will launch later this year.

OLED-Display says it has obtained a leaked document from Samsung, dated from December 2011. According the document, Apple will launch a 7-inch 'iPad mini' in Q3 of this year...

Apple confirms the iPhone uses Corning glass

We've assumed for a long time that Apple used ultra-tough Corning glass in its iOS products. Corning, a US-based company that specializes in glass and ceramics, is the maker of the popular Gorilla Glass display cover found in several devices.

Apple's never said for sure whether or not it uses the scratch-resistant glass cover in its mobile gadgets. But that changed today when the company, possibly by accident, confirmed its relationship with Corning in its new Job Creation page...

iPad 3 Retina Display confirmed

After months of speculation, it appears that it has now been confirmed that Apple's next tablet will feature a Retina display.

The confirmation comes from the folks over at MacRumors, who have just gotten their hands on one of the purported iPad 3 display panels that have been floating around China for the past few weeks...
