You should update to iOS 8.1 now if you’re at all interested in jailbreaking

Perhaps you've been holding out on updating to iOS 8.1 until there's a "stable" jailbreak and a stable version of Cydia. Maybe you're like Sebastien and Cody, and just want to make sure that things run smoothly enough, and that the compelling tweaks are updated for iOS 8 before taking the leap.

Throw all of that logic out of the window. If you're an iOS 7.x jailbreak holdover, it's time to stop holding out and just update. iOS 8.1.1 is now in beta, and it has been confirmed to kill Pangu's iOS 8.x jailbreak. Even if you don't want to jailbreak right now, it's still a good idea to go ahead and upgrade to iOS 8.1, so that when the jailbreak does meet your needs, you can still jailbreak on iOS 8.

Infographic offers snapshot of jailbreakers on reddit

The folks over on the popular subreddit r/jailbreak recently participated in a survey, offering up their favorite tweaks, themes, and other information. Over 1,200 people participated in the project, and the results offer a small snapshot of jailbreakers on reddit.

For example, of those that participated, only 51 of them claimed to be female, and over 700 fell into the 15-20 years-old age bracket. The most popular tweak, by far, in the group was Activator, followed by f.lux and BiteSMS. We've embedded the full results below.

YouTube now accepts silky smooth 60FPS footage captured on your iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus

Announced four months ago at the VidCon conference, the Internet giant Google a few days ago began rolling out support for playback of YouTube videos recorded in 48 and 60 frames per second (FPS).

This is great news for both video creators and Apple fans, who can now upload their silky smooth 60FPS footage captured on their iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus to YouTube.

For those who have been sleeping under the rock, the new iPhones are capable of capturing full HD (1,920-by-1,080 pixels) footage at either 30 or 60 frames per second, depending on your preference set in Settings > Photos & Camera.

And with YouTube officially accepting 60FPS uploads, your high frame rate footage gets a treatment it deserves.

If you haven't shot any 60FPS video on your iPhone 6 yet, do it now — I guarantee you'll be amazed how smooth it plays back without any stutter, no matter how fast you pan the camera.

Aeternum: the best looking Apple Watch UI SpringBoard replacement for iPhone

I just got my hands on the latest jailbreak tweak to take advantage of Lucas Mendes' open source Apple Watch UI for the iPhone. It's called Aeternum, which means eternity in latin, and it's from the developer that brought us iRealSMS and iTouchSecure. In other words, it's from a quality well-known developer.

I've tried a few tweaks that build upon Mendes' code, but Aeternum is far and away the best looking and best functioning one thus far. Not only do you get the Apple Watch UI, but you get smooth animations, a dock, and the ability to rearrange app icons. It still has some ways to go, but it's very promising. Have a look at our full video walkthrough after the jump.

Law firm investigating CVS and Rite Aid for potential class action suit over Apple Pay

Law firm Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe has launched an antitrust investigation into CVS and Rite Aid over their decision to stop accepting Apple Pay in their retail stores. As noted by MacRumors, the firm, which specializes in class action lawsuits, made the announcement on their blog last night.

Attorneys for Schubert Jonckheer & Kolbe say that the two retail chains may have violated anti-trust laws, and the situation has class action potential. "Consumers with phones that support Apple Pay may be able to participate in a class action to restore the service at CVS and Rite Aid retail stores."

Google News & Weather gets iOS 8 Today widget

Nearly a month following its App Store debut, the search giant's News & Weather application for the iPhone and iPad has received a Today widget for iOS 8's Notification Center, along with a handful of bug fixes.

Bumped from version 1.0.232 to 1.1.276, the software now provides an at-a-glance overview of the top three headlines within the Notification Center, but no  interactivity.

Google News & Weather is free in the App Store.

Real Racing 3 updated with new Maserati vehicles, new events and more

Two months after its 'Classic Lamborghini' update, the folks at EA have posted another new version of its popular Real Racing 3 game today that brings about new vehicles from both Maserati and Ferrari, new bonus events, and much more.

The new vehicles include the Maserati Trident, the GranTurismo MC Stradale, and its limited edition race-spec counterpart. The update also features the LaFerrari—Ferrari's first production car equipped with the F1-derived hybrid engine.

Michael Fassbender now in talks to play Steve Jobs in Sony biopic

The tumultuous casting process of Sony's Steve Jobs biopic continues, with Michael Fassbender now reportedly in talks to play the Apple co-founder. Variety reports today that following the departure of Christian Bale, the actor has begun "early talks" with director Danny Boyle and Sony execs.

Although not as well known as Bale, Fassbender has starred in a number of high profile movies, including Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds and Ridley Scott's Prometheus. He also received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor, for his performance in 12 Years a Slave.

Neato lets you jot quick notes directly from Notification Center

Neato is a new application that mostly consists of a Notification Center extension that lets you quickly jot down quick notes from anywhere on iOS. After installing the free app from the App Store, simply add the Notification Center extension to start typing in notes from the Lock screen, Home screen, or directly from within an application.

Notes can be synced with Evernote or with Dropbox. Additionally, whatever you type can be easily shared to Twitter, or via email or text message.

Woah Dave! will scratch that old-school arcade game itch

Retro games are a big deal in the App Store. I personally love those fantastic 8-bit games from my childhood. I know that technology has made it possible for our video games to look like movies now, but I have a spot in my heart for those pixelated power ups that I grew up on.

Woah Dave! is a retro style game that pays homage to the classics. Not only does it look like it came out in 1982, but the choppy, blips and bleeps of the soundtrack really take you back a few decades.

How much will stainless steel and gold Apple Watches cost? New rumor has the answer

The Apple Watch will start at $349 for the basic Sport edition with its anodized aluminum case and come in Spring 2015.

But what about the more expensive stainless steel version — and especially the luxurious gold edition which features a case crafted from 18-karat gold that “our metallurgists have developed to be up to twice as hard as standard gold“?

While the Cupertino firm has yet to reveal pricing for these Apple Watches, a new rumor shared by French blog iGen.fr [Google Translate] pegs the asking prices of the stainless steel model with a polished or black side at $500.

And if you have a hole burning in your pocket that demands to be filled with cash, you'll definitely want to avoid the pricey gold edition.

iOS 8.1.1 apparently kills Pangu jailbreak

The cat and mouse game between Apple and the jailbreak community is still very much happening, if an unconfirmed message from an apparent member of the Pangu Team is to be believed.

Weibo user Daniel_K4, who is apparently a member of the Pangu Team recently posted that iOS 8.1.1 beta that was released yesterday patches exploits used by the Pangu jailbreak, incapacitating the jailbreak process on devices that will be updated to the latest OS version once it is released to the public.
