‘Aqueux’ is a beautiful collection of backgrounds inspired by classic OS X wallpapers

The iDownloadBlog Wallpapers of the Week collection brings you incredible, photo quality backgrounds every Sunday. Our collection runs across many genres, but of the most popular, are original Apple wallpapers or those inspired by actual Apple images.

This “Aqueux” OS X wallpaper collection bridges both of those sub-genre with OS X Aqua inspired, macOS X smash up designs for iPad.

Classic OS X wallpapers

A lot of people have been excited about the original iOS clown fish wallpaper showing up in iOS 16 betas. It’s caused quite a stir among the Apple faithful. With that excitement in mind, this collection pays homage to earlier OS X versions.

Aqueux is based on Aqua, the GUI and design language of OS X, which was first introduced in the Mac OS X public beta, Kodiak. The initial release was on January 6, 2000. Jobs noted at the introduction “… it’s liquid, one of the design goes was when you saw it, you wanted to lick it.”

Taking one of the original Aqua wallpapers from OS X 10.4 Tiger, Hector Simpson @dizzyup, mashed up the Tiger wallpaper with newer OS X and macOS stock wallpapers. As shown below, you will see Tiger versions with gradients from Leopard, Lion, Mavericks, Yosemite, Sierra, Monterey, and the newest macOS Ventura.

Below are the iPad versions of the images, which are fine to utilize for even the largest iPhone Max devices.

There are dedicated iPhone-sized options on his own gallery. If you are loving these designs, you can actually purchase a 6K desktop version that even change dynamically throughout the day. This is not an ad, mind you. I decided to pay the minimal amount for an incredible collection. If you consider the dynamic versions as static images, which you can download individually after purchase, there are 47 images in the total collection.

My thanks to @BasicAppleGuy for the tip on today’s downloads. You too can influence the iDB wallpaper gallery by catching up with me via @jim_gresham. Follow along for mid-week downloads, sneak peaks of upcoming posts, and general Apple banter as we head into hardware season.
