In their review of the new Samsung Galaxy S4, CNET found out the following:

Nearly half of the S4’s storage space (after a factory reset, our 16GB Galaxy S4 showed 8.49GB of available room) is taken up with the phone’s operating system and built-in apps, limiting the amount of data you can store on the company’s quad-core monster.

Now the question is, should Samsung sell it as an 8GB phone?

  • M Last

their answer is you always can purchase micro SD Card :)LOL

    • King

still cheaper than the ridiculous price diffidence apple charge pre-gb version

      • I think you are comparing top grade internal memory to cheap sd cards from ebay. Transfer rates and quality are a lot different.

      • Mohammed Sahib

Take iPad: The price difference between the 16 Gb and 32Gb is the same as between the 64 and 128Gb versions, in other words: an additional $100 gives 16GB in one instance and 64Gb in another. Do you still think the additional price is the cost of additional internal memory?!! Is it fair? or is it pure corporate greed? and ripping their customers and fans? They should at least remove the 16Gb model and replace it with the 32 one at the same price point. 16Gb is so 2011 with all the much advocated HD content and retina-optimized games and apps.

      • Ben

        That sir, is marketing.

      • Mr_Russ1an

Apple should not remove the 16GB one because it is enough space for me on my retina iPad. I just do not download hundreds of apps and I do not keep a lot of apps on the device. With the iPod, they should have kept the 16GB version instead of getting rid of it and making a 32GB version which is really expensive.

      • yahmed

        Money making machines

      • Since when does Hynix manufacture top grade internal memory? Flash memory in the iPhone 4 is made by *drumroll* Samsung! Need I go on?

Also, transfer rates of $50 64 GB Class 10 SD cards are pretty much the same to the internal memory found in the iPhone, if not higher. It sure ain’t top grade, sir, you are being ripped off.

        (isuppli_com/PublishingImages/Press%20Releases/2012-09-25_iPhone5.jpg)

      • Some people just don’t get it lol. How are you comparing sd with internal flash? Yes both are solid state but they are completely different in terms of performance. There’s a reason iPhone won’t ever need to rely on SD for storage. It would be nice to have but I personally wouldn’t save anything to it. I would like it for the purpose of transferring from a different camera but we have a nice little adapter that doesn’t take up space on the phone. Or give it an ugly looking slot. The sim slot is enough but maybe apple can conceal it better

    • JaeM1llz

At least they give you that option. I’d much rather have smaller internal storage and the ability to add more storage externally.

      • You really cannot compare top quality flash memory to sd cards. Also, are you actually able to install apps onto this SD card?

      • cayano1

You can’t install apps on Micro SD Card. Useless!

    • felixtaf

Although i hate samsung, thats a reasonable answer… SD cards are cheap and i think that phone can take upto 64gb…

    • Still prefer it over “You can always buy an entirely new phone.”
      🙂 LOL

    • “Unlike the HTC One and iPhone 5, the Galaxy S4 does come with a microSD card slot, to expand the amount of storage at your disposal. What you might not know, however, is that Samsung DOESN’T LET YOU INSTALL APPS onto that card.” -says the source.

So you could only install about 10 big games and then it would be full…

    • U cannot move apps from phone memory to sd card (after the android v4 ICS, u can’t move apps to sd cards), u have to root it. But it’s still not working properly on every android, btw it’s “directory bind”.. But the fckin annoying thing is that u just install 3-4 hd games on s4 n it won’t able to install a single other app. This kind of issue shouldn’t be exist in any high end mobile. People who purchased galaxy s4 16gb are now fcked 😛 as 8gb is nothing. That external micro sd card is only useful when u wants listen n watch music videos n movies. This is the ONLY use of sd cards in androids. (At least iPhone’s 16gb memory is almost double compare to S4,, around 14gb I guess, I never had 16gb iOS device, I mostly purchased 64gb or 32gb version, using iOS devices since 3GS:)

    • cayano1

You can’t install apps on Micro SD Card. Useless if you have many apps

    • yahmed

Haha so true! They just TAKE our money!

  • Mohammad Ridwan

HA HA HA… Robbery in their High-end Phone.. lmfao

    • Metroview

“HA HA HA… Robbery in all of Apple’s devices.. lmfao” fixed that for you

    • And $100 to upgrade from 16 Gb to 32 GB iPhone isn’t a robbery??? WTF?

      • at least in my country, upgrading to a 32 gb apple device is cheaper then buying a sd card with a good transfer rate…

      • Mohammed Sahib

        Where do you live?
Note to self: prepare passport and stack up on SD cards.
        😛

      • That may be the case, but how fast does your card have to be? Also, keep in mind that iPhone 4’s flash memory has read/write speeds of ~20/5 MB per second. Class 10 64 GB SD cards have approximately the same speeds, depending on the model, and cost around $50 to $60. (amazon com/Transcend-Class-Flash-Memory-TS64GSDXC10E/dp/B004XIB9T6)

Expandable storage would easily save you $140 if you could upgrade the base iPhone model. The only reason Apple doesn’t allow it is because they enjoy cashing in on limiting the user experience.

      • Or they’d like to keep their OS closed as always, which I don’t think is such a bad thing

      • There true solid state there not SD quality get that threw your hard head lol. I’m only kidding with you.

      • Kurt

They’re*…”there” is used to talk about an object a bit of a distance from you as opposed to here. You always make the same mistake. “Their” is for ownership. “They’re” is a contraction of the pronoun they+to be verb.

Through*…”threw” is the past tense word for throw.

Thick head* The expression is thick head not hard head

Learn English since it’s your native language and the only language you speak.

      • Mohammad Ridwan

At least you know what you are getting… unlike Shamesung who would hide behind lie.

  • JaeM1llz

“Now the question is, should Samsung sell it as an 8GB phone?” No, because it’s a 16GB phone…..

    • if I buy an 8GB phone that has 0 GB of storage b/c its all taken up by the OS.. I’d be pissed.
I wont count it as an 8GB phone…….

      • wheebang

The OS takes space.. The same with iPhone, and iPad too.

The iPad leaves 11MB free which is better than 8.89. It’s a shame that Samsung does not let you uninstall the pre-installed crap to give you your space back. I just got the 32MB SG4 which had about 25MB free if I remember. Not great, but not too bad since I can store my videos and music on an SD, and some larger games also store a large portion of their content on the SD as well.

  • wonderboydave

this would be problematic on the HTC one, since it doesn’t give u the option for external memory.

    • Mohammed Sahib

And that’s why it offers only 32 and 64 Gb versions, with the former priced at a reasonable $575 unlocked. Great modern phone IMO.

  • felixtaf

Still better than surface tabs!!! Lol… Its Shamesung, but we dnt have to bash it for everything…. SD cards are damn cheap….

  • asine21

does apple sell the iPhone as 12 GB phone, you moron?
16GB microsd costs only $20 (or less most of the time) vs. $100 Apple charges for the same amount of space.

    • Chandler Dzula

Different speeds, microsd is alot slower vs SSD. SSD is ALOT more expensive because of this and alot more reliable.

      • Metroview

Do me a favor and list phones and tablets that have SSD in them…

      • Chandler Dzula

        iPhones, iPads?

      • Metroview

No. They have NAND based flash memory. Same with every other phone and tablet.

      • Mohammed Sahib

Lol, that’s basically what SSD is: NAND flash + controller!

      • wheebang

Not exactly true. SSD has much more refined memory for performance. a CF card is NAND + a controller too, but I would hardly consider than an SSD device.

      • felixtaf

“The success of the iPad and the iPhone as well as Android-based devices only prove that investing in solid-state storage for mobile solutions is currently a much more profitable business than making SSDs for computers” – Source: CNET, Storage Talk.

      • There is a VAST difference between solid state storage and flash storage found in portable devices!

      • felixtaf

Am NO tech-genius… I shared what I read… U can also read n see if this makes sense. “CNET: Sorage talk: Why SSDs are still so expensive”.

      • Mohammed Sahib

I believe SD speeds are sufficient for photos and music. Internal memory can be used exclusively for intensive games and apps.

      • wheebang

Exactly. cheap (I’m talking a $15 buck 32GB) SD card is more than adequate to save photos real-time and watch 1080p movies. Don’t need anything ultra fast. I got two of them for my devices, and they perform quite well.

On-board memory has to be quicker to launch those multi-gig games, but media (movies and music) can reside on slower SDs without any performance issues.

    • Mustang5Oh

Wow you are a huge tool bag. Congrats.

      • Gorgonphone

he is a damn tool truck full of tool bags

  • Ignacio Irigoyen

The time is approaching were the mobile OS takes up the same space as a full feature OS

    • felixtaf

Its already done in this case….. I think Xp is 5gb, Win 7 is 7-9 gb… Dont know about Mac OSX n Win 8…

      • Nano

        win8 = 2.4GB , Mac OSX 4.3GB

      • felixtaf

Cudnt be true… The OS 8 is 4-5 gb in DVD…. U r jus posting some numbers.. lol

  • asine21

a lot of the apps i bet are useless samsung crap like media hub, etc. which can easily be removed (possibly after rooting) to get back much of that space.

    • wheebang

I don’t like rooting my devices, but yes, you can reclaim about 4GB worth of space by deleting that crap.

  • iBanks

Lol. That’s crazy. Myself, I’m waiting for the day where I need no internal memory or memory card, I’d rather all my things be in the cloud on multiple backup servers. Sucks for my data plan but worth it to me.

    • asine21

and when there’s no cell signal? or you’re traveling abroad?
happy to pay $100 roaming for 50mb of data?

      • iBanks

Happily… Pay more than that when on a cruise ship to make a an single call.

      • Ian

I’d suggest begging Bill Gates for a check.

      • Where do you you live and what provider do you have because us is currently leading in wireless infrastructure so that’s hardly a problem. I was using Skype on 3G almost 5 years ago in the middle of the desert going to Arizona. So if that doesn’t say much I don’t know what does.

      • asine21

i live in New York, and you might be surprised to know, but at&t loses signal even on parts of the Long Island Expressway (“the busiest highway in the US”), and some of the local routes in the Hamptons also have no signal (at least with at&t).

      • Trust me I believe you

How’s Verizon down there? Is it the same? Maybe it’s bette. Check them out maybe they work better for you. I currently have AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. They work great in my city.

      • asine21

verizon might be a little better in the suburbs. but i only travel out there on weekends, mostly in the summer. so it doesn’t matter much, as at&t has much faster lte compared to verizon in the city.

      • It’s that a fact for LTE in New York?
I get 40 down on average in Los Angeles at night I get 65

      • asine21

much more congested networks, and less than half the speed here for most of the time.

  • sjimmiep

    Who cares?
    Isn’t this an iDevice blog?

  • shadyside4fyr

Apple’s scam to me seems rather obvious, they skip hardware updates and charge the same price for outdated new devices, they make tiny variations to the same product and sell it at ridiculous prices for these slight variations (when they can just put an SD card slot) they cripple devices with great potentials so they can sell the more expensive ones, they convince consumers that they do not need features they are going to be charged for.But the best thing about this scam is that they have consumers fighting to be cheated no one talks and no one listens all they do is swallow whatever pills apple gives no matter how big.

    • Gorgonphone

iphone > android sooooo cry all you want..

  • Ernie Marin

Well, you don’t buy an android phone because of space, but because of how easy is to manage an sdcard

    • Gorgonphone

SD transfer rates are slow as hell… so no i dont want it..

      • wheebang

Slow compared to what? Sure it’s not SSD speeds, but it’s enough to pull a 1080p movie with room to spare That is all they are intended for.. media..

  • jilex

wlee samsung surely has to do something about this (i doubt they do but whatever) a lot of things can be removed after rooting, now, apple doesn’t sell the 16 GB iPhone as a 12GB device, so why has samsung to do it? of course is better the internal memory, but you can always boy some SD cards, an about the installing an app in the SD issue, it’s easy, you change the rom for another that lets you make a partition and problem solved

    • Gorgonphone

dude half of the advertised storage and you think its okay?????…looolll

      • jilex

no no, i’m saying it’s ok to use SD cards, they are not that bad just because apple doesn’t uses them, about the internal storage of the device i said samsung should do something about it, but they wont, i’m almost sure of that

  • Ian

Yeah, no wonder I’m sticking with iPhone..

  • Gorgonphone

loloollolololol inefficiency at its finest… android suck and samsung suuuuucks…

    • wheebang

      ROFLMMFAO2POHAIPM

      • lmao

        ROFLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ.. ok whatever lol.

  • I love when an Apple “news” site covers anything but Apple.

  • but i am still buying it … on it’s way, enough with this shit so called ios

  • Soran Ebrahim

That’s the same reason why my iphone only have 6GB even it is called 8GB iPhone 4. Android OS is different with iOS, the ‘used’ 8GB on S4 is actually useful when the device connected to a PC or when it have to install some big apps. It is just like the internal SD card and cannot be unmount. So just stop blaming SAMSUNG, the Dorid Razr by MOTOROLA which I used to have is of same problem.

  • Regardless of whether you can buy more memory or not, I still consider it false advertisement to consider it a 16 gb phone. Just like Microsoft and the god awful surface.. Samsung sucks, I wonder if it’s gay screen can tell I’m rolling my eyes!

  • batongxue

These days short articles are pretty popular on iDB.
    LOL

CNET is now one of the biggetst troll for Shamesung.
Check out those biased reviews and you will get the idea.

  • Really??? That’s stupid, over 8gigs just on firmware plus i was expecting more from the s4

  • Tom

I have galaxy s2 and I can move files from phone to SD card

  • Raymond Spruance Lee

Samsung want to say every S4 users should buy micro SD Card hahahah!

    • wheebang

At least SD cards are cheap.

  • iOops

Taking up 45% of the storage for the OS and some more than useless apps amazes me. I got the 32GB International flavour, and it comes with 25GB free. Still plenty especially with 64GB SD cards, but damn, that is a waste.

I cannot remember off hand what my 32GB iPhone 5 capacity is. I think it was something like 28GB if memory serves.

  • cayano1

Yes, they should sell it as 8gb phone. I was going to buy one today, but after I read this article. Forget it! I go with the htc one 64gb almost the same price.
You can’t install apps on Micro SD Card. Useless if you have many apps like me.

  • Luis

16 GB in 2013 with a little over 8 GB available for personal use is not acceptable to me in 2013 on ANY cell costing over $600. Yes, you can direct your pics and videos to a memory card and store your music there but you CAN NOT put your apps there without rooting. Most people don’t alter their devices in that manner. Say I install Real Racing 3, Modern Combat 4, and Dead Trigger, My 8 GB of storage just got shot down to 4 and a half GB maybe 5! I will either wait for 32 GB model to show up or just skip it and go for htc one with 32 GB. The remedy is fair and simple-just put a sticker on the box letting customers know how much usable storage is available to them-but to tell me to go out and buy a memory card to expand my storage and then not let me put apps on them is so not cool and I would return it in a hearbeat.

    • Luis

To answer your question fairly NO it should not b sold as an 8 GB phone because it has 16 GB-but DISCLOSE how much ACTUAL STORAGE is available for personal use ON THE BOX.

  • Abid Jamal

Guys how about we sue samsung for doing this cheap act, I just need an army , if anyone want to join me then contact me on wild1turi@gmail.com its our right, we should fight for it. We will get , what we paid for.
