Even though the new iPad doesn’t officially go on sale until tomorrow morning, some folks have already gotten their hands on the one. It appears that some retailers started selling the tablet around midnight tonight.

Of course, now that it’s starting to make its way into customers hands, the big question here at iDB is: “when will it be jailbroken?” Luckily, the infamous Dev Team posted some interesting information tonight regarding the topic…

“There are a few bits of good news already:

  • We can confirm that the method used to jailbreak the iPad2 4 months ago still works even in 5.1. That means that we’ll at least be able to get our foot in the door to get the required kernel dumps on the ipad 3. That’s an important step, but by no means is it the end of the story.
  • Those of you following @i0n1c may have noticed he’s already tweeted pictures of his iPad 2 jailbroken at 5.1. As far as we know, he’s using a method completely unrelated to the one mentioned above. That would be great news!
  • We’ve also seen bits and pieces of an entirely different jailbreak method being investigated by someone close to the Cydia repo scene.

That’s three different angles, and we’re not even including the continuous work @pod2g makes towards a new jailbreak! As always, keep in mind this is very preliminary progress, and it’s impossible to predict how or when these things turn out.”

The post goes on to mention that it’s possible that some third-generation iPads are shipping with software prior to iOS 5.1. So make sure that when/if you plug the new tablet into your computer, that you do not upgrade the firmware!

It looks like the hackers of the jailbreak community have a pretty good bead on things. And hats off to the Dev Team for keeping us up to date and informed. Now our next question is, will Saurik update Cydia with Retina graphics?

Kidding, of course.

Actually, the word “bead” was intentional. The idiom “good bead” means to have a head start or a firm grasp in a given situation.

      Thanks for reading!

      • Ah, wasn’t aware of that. You learn something every day, thank you.

    • The B is not really close to the L so he must’ve had pretty big fingers to make that typo…

  • Great news..&thnx for the tip about Walmart! Scored me one!

  • New iPads shipping with 5.0.1 or earlier just doesn’t sound right. The signing window’s already ended and Apple doesn’t want it jailbroken of course.

I actually took the post to mean something *newer* than 5.1, as in a different build than the currently publicly available 5.1. Also, there have been rumblings before about devices shipping with Apple debug builds which are highly sought after by the most prominent hackers as they are supposed to reveal SIGNIFICANTLY more information about the workings of IOS than just reverse engineering can do.

      Something like that.

      • Maybe they have an earlier build of 5.1 than the others (like 5.0.1 build 9A405/6). Or like you said, a debug build.

      • How do you know if you have a debug build?

      • I’m thinking that the way to tell is to connect it to your computer, and I’d it asks you to update your firmware, you might have one of the above mentioned iPads..that would be my guess anyways

      • Usually you’d get debug settings in the settings app, or if you’re lucky, it might come with the SwitchBoard testing OS instead of iOS.

        Ad@m

      • “Prior” does not mean “newer”. He was referring to 5.0.1 being on some devices, which is possible. It would be a mistake of course, but still possible.

Cody is the one who said “prior.” I was referring to Musclenerd in the Dev-Team Blog post that Cody was talking about. I was saying I understood that differently than Cody did which is why Cody’s post uses different verbiage. Musclenerd’s original language is as follows:

“By the way, it’s rare but entirely possible that some of you may find your iPad3 comes with an iOS version that’s not quite 5.1. If you do, be sure to let us know in the comments below!”

  • This is great news! Good work DreamTeam!

  • sylvan feghali

Hell Yeah ! Bring it on Babe:) , There is a big prize for the Head of Ipad 3 jailbreak ,lol

  • Good news for us…… But imagine the developers of jailbreak tweaks like RetinaPad……. The iPad has a retina display…… So no one would use that tweak anymore…..

    • Time for RetinaPad2…;D
