Since Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 5 back in June of this year, the jailbreak community has been eagerly waiting for an untethered exploit. We’ve been able to jailbreak the firmware since practically day one, but it’s always been a tethered solution.

But that could soon change thanks to iOS hacker pod2g. He’s been working hard on an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 and keeping the community updated via Twitter and blog posts. Now it seems that he’s just hit a major milestone in his progress…

A few days ago, we told you that the coding was done on the jailbreak for all applicable A4 devices. Today, pod2g has submitted another update to his blog, stating that testing on the A4 devices is done and he’s now looking to move on to A5 devices:

“Hello my friends, I know that I’ve been silent yesterday and that it was annoying. Sorry for this, but I had to organize things for the release. Also, I’ve tested iPad 1 and it worked. Today I hope I can test a 3GS.

BTW: please don’t propose to be a beta tester because I’m too paranoid, fearing leaks. Now the time to finalize the jailbreak for old devices, fix some stability issues and package the whole. That will take some days.

In the meanwhile, I’m starting the research for iPad 2 and 4S. I’ll take you informed of my progress. Finally, I want to thank all who donated. I can now buy both devices! I don’t know what to say. Thank you very much my friends. Have a good day! See ya.”

We can tell from the blog post that the jailbreak is fairly close to being finished for older devices. And while we don’t have any information regarding iPad 2 and iPhone 4S compatibility, we can see that he is looking to start testing on these devices very soon.

The anticipation mounting for the the iOS 5 untethered jailbreak kind of reminds us of Comex’s JailbreakMe 3.0 release. We’ll keep you updated on pod2g’s progress and let you know when the actual jailbreak is available the moment it hits. Stay tuned.

There are no beta testers for this untethered jailbreak because of the JailbreakMe 3.0 (Saffron) incident 😀

  • Well I suppose it’s one way to get a iPhone 4s and a iPad 2…lol… You just need to know how to hack all these idevices …way to go pod2g

  • Bravo pod2g, no more kindergarden drawing pad 2 anymore!

  • wow they putting a lot of effort into this without getting payed.. i just gotta say that i appreciate what you guys are doing for yourselves and us.. such great knowledge you guys have and that u guys love what you doing because without it we wouldnt have it jailbreak devices…. i hope in the following days you guys try to find a jb for the A5 devices… well idk if im going to use it on my ipod 4G ios 5.0.1 if i have ios 4.3.3.. 🙂 but thanks for all your hard work and time you guys put into this tool 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

    • Are you kidding ? he’s gonna buy iPad 2 & iPhone 4S from donations… and and he is not getting paid ? i would do it too if so !

      • Anonymous

Donations and getting paid are to very different things. If he gets paid then he would have had the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2, ages ago. With donations, people are giving him money for all his hard work. The latter being a person’s choice to give money, not being forced to do so. If he actually were to get paid, then he would charge an amount for the JB tool (which no JB Dev does).

      • Are you sure you got it right? Ppl like me donates money so he can apply his jb on to them.
If you jb 5.1 I will personally donate 10 of each idevices to you.
        Until then, you’re a twat.

why there is no mentions of possible jailbreak of ios 5.1 ?
two betas were released and no word from DEV-team or Pod2g ? will this jailbreak work on ios 5.1 ? maybe better to wait till 5.1 is realeased then release the untethered jailbreak ?

  • Is there going to be an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0? Is this jailbreak only for iOS 5.0.1?

    • Anonymous

This exploit works on both 5.0 and 5.0.1

  • The untethered jailbreak will be for 5.0.0 also right?

  • I am kind of scared to update for the new jailbreak cuz I don’t want to lose my siri0us dictation for the iPhone 4 Which I use to write this

  • ok does ipad1 themes work on ipad2 too?

  • Anonymous

But today’s update states that he has tested iphone 3GS but iPod and iPhone 4 (A4 devices) are still to be tested. Anyway, great news for us jailbreakers, and great work from pod2g.

    • Anonymous

Well done pod2g you are our hero..keep up the good work, I cant wait for your jailbreak on ipad2 & iphone 4s

  • is it possible to do a untethered jailbreak over a tethered jailbreak? or would i have to do a restore then install the untethered?

  • Fabricio Gonçalves

finally, btw we are still waiting for this… i hope this can be released very fast ^^

  • i wish they suprised us and did it today.that would be awesome as.:-)))

Why yes I do have questions. Let’s say that by chance Apple patches this hole in 5.1 (by “accident”).

Am I better to upgrade from 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 right now and wait it out for the untethered? I’m afraid I won’t be able to upgrade to 5.0.1 when 5.1 is released.

    • Anonymous

When 5.1 is released, you have a few hours to update to 5.0.1(last time it was just under 24hrs), before apple stop signing the previous firmware, as the new one is released.
You could download 5.0.1 for your device, from this site.
Option(Mac) OR Shift(PC) + Restore in iTunes, and point it towards that 5.0.1 to restore your device to that firmware.

        Thanks for the reply iPos3r.

I’ve actually already done that, and also already ran it through sn0wbreeze 2.8b11 to create the ipsw that will preserve my 01.59 baseband. So really it looks like this is the most I can do until T minus 24-or-so-hours. Or I upgrade now to 5.0.1. I’m just a bit worried about upgrading right now as I’ve only read failure comments from people who attempted it (iPhone 4).

a lot of people might/gonna miss the window, due to being away on vacation, out of town, etc(plus 24hrs can go by fast)….so it would be best to go chill on the version, or atleast go to it(5.0.1), ifaith it(save blobs), and return to 4.3.3 if you have blobs saved.
i do have 4.3.3 blobs saved, but i prefer iOS 5 with semi-tether(no issues).

  • I think he deserves it it is the least we can do to show him we support him and are grateful I love my iPad 2 jailbroken I have graviboard and it is absolutely awesome.

  • Can I upgrade directly from my previously jailbreak 4.3.3 to 5.0.1 untethered when it’s out? Thanks in advance`

    • Not directly, but you can download “AptBackup” before and after you upgrade. It saves a list of your installed packages from Cydia so you can get them all back by pressing one button. But you’ll need to set your SSH password again.

see my reply, 2 posts above ^^^^^.

  • Hi. Such a hard work deserves some worldly useful way of saying thanks, besides THANK YOU- how can I donate? Please let me know. Thank you. Diego.

  • Yeah this is great news! I would like to donate aswell. Reading all these blogs about how these guys do so much for the JB community I think more ppl should support by donating. Alot of hard work goes into this and everyone needs to support these guys. Not many supported comex and look where ended up! ( good on him too ) I read he didn’t make much for all his efforts and that contributed to him taking the internship…. So support by donating it’s the least you can do… $1 X JB community = happy developer which in turn gives happy users!!!! JB for LIFE
