Last week we broke the news that jailbreak hacker iH8sn0w was actively working on bringing Siri to iDevices like the 4G iPod touch and iPhone 4. This got a lot of people excited at the possibility of getting access to Siri’s artificial intelligence without having to upgrade to the iPhone 4S.

This morning, the Dev Team’s MuscleNerd sent out a tweet saying that porting Siri to the iPhone 4 or any other iDevice would most likely require piracy, something that the Dev Team has always refused to do…

MuscleNerd said:

Anyone hoping for a “port” of Siri from iPhone4S: pending a very low-level A5 exploit, it likely can’t be done without piracy ๐Ÿ™

According to MuscleNerd, the only way to legally port Siri to other iDevices would be to get access to the main FileSystem keys, which requires a low level exploit. There hasn’t been such an exploit for the A5 processor yet. Without access to the filesystem key, piracy is the only option.

But who knows, maybe iH8sn0w has something up his sleeve we don’t know about. When asked to comment on the issue, here’s what iH8sn0w had to say:

While hackers could illegally port Siri to other devices, they’d put themselves at risk of being sued by Apple. That’s why hacker teams such as the Dev Team have always made a point not to pirate, but to use legal means for reaching their ends.

This is a matter we’ll be following closely, so stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

    do it,

  • keith

PLEASE DEV-TEAM!!! I know you guys are hard at work on this exploit rght now, and I have nothing but the upmost respect and confidence that you will find a solution without having to pirate. Appreciate everything you’ve done for me in the past and be looking foward to Siri on my iPhone 4.

    • JamesAlab

Oh sorry for you but this blog isn’t the Dev Team’s web site.
Better reach them directly on their site instead. I’m nit sure they’ll be reding your comment among millions of comments on the Web, but who knows… Maybe I’m wrong

  • Me

Who gives a sh1t? Just do it!

    • 877

+1 who give a f@ck just do it

      • elcarlitoxloco

and deal with the consequences of getting sued for immense amounts of money, which will probably put and end to one of our most reliable jailbreaker teams out there? i don’t think so.

    • keith

well being that, THEY will be the ones being sued by apple, im sure THEY give a “sh1t” ,as you put it.

  • TOrni

    Please DO IT !!!!

  • Just Me!

Meh! there will just be an even better Siri alternative jailbreak app IMO

If they managed to make it work anyways, a new exploit would need to be found every time just for Siri

  • Zack

I love how everyone comments how bad piracy is, unless it’s something they REAALLY want, and can ONLY get via piracy.

  • Joey Johari

    That would be so coooooool….!!!!…:)

We desirve Siri .. It was an app for every one before apple hires the developer ..
Siri should be for everyone ..

  • Francesco

damn ppl, they respect apple, but you guys know that jailbreak in the past was never piracy thats why they keep doing it, but also they never pirated anything from Apple.. and it looks like this is the thing that will have to pirated, but they won’t because they are against piracy.SO LEAVE THEM BE

  • Simche

I hope the dev team finds ร  way to port it, even if they want it to be legally (and it Will probably be time consuming), but it’s like the say: ‘patiance has its own rewards’ ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I couldn’t give two shits about whether it is pirated or not. The only thing that would bother me is DevTeam getting sued.

  • If they won’t/can’t do it there will be someone that will/can do it ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Masterchecker

Appreciate that they stick to there icodex

  • Jacob Nรธrgaard

You know, I’m almost positive Apple WILL let iPhone 4 and iPad users utilise Siri, but it will remain an exclusive for iPhone 4S.

  • soccerkrzy

I don’t understand how it’s piracy. Jailbreaking is exploiting and changing Apple’s software code to begin with, wouldn’t porting Siri’s over just be tricking the phone into thinking it’s an iPhone 4S? Wouldn’t it be unlocking Siri’s code since it’s embedded in iOS5, or would they literally have to copy the Siri code and insert it into something else to work?

    • CrazyBraulz

Can someone explain how it’s piracy? If apple doesn’t sell it, and it goes to other idevices for free, I wouldn’t consider that piracy. So it would suck for the dev team to give it to us for free, but I myself would consider donating more money if this is done ๐Ÿ™‚

      • Parminder

        Is it not Piracy….
        1. When Video Camera for 3G, Game Center, Multitasking, Face Time on 3GS etc..
Comm on Dave Team, i love to donate to you instead of an upgrade to iPhone 4S.

      • CrazyBraulz

    • Milamber

I’m guessing that it can’t be done without distributing files that apple owns.

Regular jailbreaking doesn’t contain any of Apples’ copyrighted code; it acts on the legal IPSW that Apple provide or talks straight to the phone.

My guess is that in order to get Siri ported, they’d have to package it up in similar to an IPA or something like that and distribute that (not sure why, but still) and they aren’t happy doing that.

    • kokhean

They cannot redistribute parts of Apple’s software legally. Parminder, the Video Camera for 3G is a third party app, it is legal. Game Center, Multitasking and FaceTime are intentionally disabled, but they are only hidden, so it is possible to enable them legally. But I guess that Siri is not hidden in the software for iPhone 4’s iOS 5 firmware, that’s what MuscleNerd is talking about.

  • Joel

Why do they have to take credit for the software in the first place? Anon release on a torrent done everyone is happy. In my opinion the feature is a novelty, I’ve never used voice control on any of my iPhones. Probably only would if I was drunk but then it wouldn’t understand me.

  • Come on keep looking for legal options if u don’t want piracy

  • Itsyaboy

Y can’t they create a diff alias and juSt release it to the public who would know ?? I don’t get it What’s so hard about that

  • Itsyaboy4

Why can’t they create a different alias and just release it to the public who would know ?? I don’t get it What’s so hard about that

  • jedoonat

‘Think different’ There has to be another way besides piracy. If I were in their shoes, I wouldn’t want to risk getting sued by Apple.

  • KiraXD

screw the siri app… someone just make that glad0siri app quick!

  • z3z

To the ppl who said do it, did you think about the future of JB? If the guys are sued, and leaves the scene, who’s gonna JB for you to begin with?

  • Kriss631

I don’t mind if it is I want Siri on my phone lol
It took me years to get an iPhone and now I have the 4 I don’t want to upgrade and plus I wouldn’t mind if I pay 8 bucks just to get Siri on my phone it is all worth it ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Steve

Can anyone with a 3GS confirm if Find My iPhone is possible with iOS 5?

  • Joseph

I would like to remind you all what the late Steve Jobs had said,

Why join the Navy if you can be a pirate ?

  • Jorge

Please please please. Having Siri ported to older devices like 3gs will definitely give the phone another year’s worth. ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Apple will probably market a Siri App for the iPhone and iPad, I’d pay $4.99 for it.

  • wliilam

omg just pirate and give to some one sketchy to put on cydia you don’t have to directly put it on cydia

  • First thing I need is iPhone 4 unlock beyond 01.59.00 basebanddd rather than porting siri…

Somebody need to put the untethered jailbreak and unlock into the top priority!!
