Late last month, the iPhone Dev Team officially released their jailbreak “backup plan”, which was released because Comex was not able to meet his Christmas ETA. The new jailbreak method, called “Jailbreak Monte” used your saved iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blobs to give your iDevice the first untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1.

The method required you to have an Apple developer account to get a hold of the 4.2 beta 3 IPSW (although the firmware could be pirated, the iPhone Dev Team is strictly against piracy).

Sunday, via Twitter @MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev Team announced that the untethered jailbreak Monte has been successfully ported back to the 4.1 kernel (SHSH blobs) for iOS 4.2.1.This means that you will now be able to use your saved iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs to get an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1…

Additionally, the Dev Team is now working on porting it forward to iOS 4.3 beta so that we may all enjoy an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.3 as well!

There wasn’t any release date announced for the redsn0w 0.9.7 beta that would make use of your 4.1 SHSH blobs, but the Dev Team’s track record speaks for itself. I’m sure we can expect it soon.

And don’t forget, the Chronic Dev Team also has an untethered jailbreak that they demoed earlier this week. It’ll be fun to see who releases it first! Bring on the untethered goodness!

Who’s ready?

  • Koppis

That’s still no good if I started with 4.2.1 :/

Do you think I should pirate the beta or wait a few weeks for the Dev Team’s JB?

    • Joel

You can still get your shsh files from apple using tiny umbrella cause they’re still signing them. Doesn’t matter what version of the iOS your phone came with.

      • Dr. Evil

The only shsh files tiny umbrella is getting right now is 4.2.1 and 4.3 beta 2

You can no longer get 4.1 or 4.2b3 shsh because apple isn’t signing them anymore

    • shaun

if you started with 4.2.1, then yes it is a good idea to wait for greenpois0n. with redsn0w you will get nowhere unless you’ve been previously jailbroken. you can expect gp within a week from today, as they only had one bug to fix. I don’t think it is a good idea to pirate the beta because they are asking nicely to not, if you were going to get a hold of it anyway, once you have it there is a crucial method that you have to undergo to access the file that only the dev teams know and has access to. Don’t worry it won’t be long now until gp is released for many and redsn0w for others.

  • Jaso

Even if you can pirate the beta. Do you know the next step? Lol think man.

Only the Dev know how to use the beta.

  • How about those still jailbroken on 4.0 ? I have an iPhone 4 that jb’n & unlocked on 4.0 . Haven’t upgraded because I didn’t want to lose the unlock option

    • Night

As per my understanding it does not matter. As long as you saved the 4.1 SHSH Blob using tiny umbrella which you could have done regardless of the iOS version. (Please correct me if I’m wrong)

      • pn2bade

No, SHSH blobs does not preserve your baseband. That will be updated to the latest version of whatever firmware you’re using. I’m pretty sure that pwnagetool has an option to keep your baseband to your current version when you upgrade.

  • Anaptiras

Kickstar correct me if i’m wrong but you can already use your 4.1 blobs to get an untethered jailbreak of 4.2.1. The big news from the Monte side is that you will now be able to untether your iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak using iOS 4.1 IPSW files. No blobs required. Hope i helped guys.

    • Kickstar13

You’ve got it wrong. You cannot currently use your 4.1 blobs to get a untethered jailbreak on 4.2.1. Before an untethered jailbreak for 4.2.1 (using Monte) was only possible with saved 4.2b3 SHSH blobs for your device. Jailbreak Monte uses the saved blobs to untether the jailbreak by “recyclng” (for example) 4.1’s exact JB exploit on 4.2.1 wasting no exploits. So if you don’t have 4.1 or 4.2b3 SHSH blobs saved then currently you will not be able to have an untethered jailbreak on iOS 4.2.1. That’s why it’s essential to save your SHSH blobs not only for downgrading purposes but for jailbreaking as well. So make sure to save your 4.2.1 SHSH blobs using TinyUmbrella while Apple is still signing them!

  • Daniel

Even if you are on 4.0 as long ad you opened
Cydia while 4.1 was being signed, your blob should be saved on the Cydia servers. You can see what blobs are saved at the top of the opening screen on Cydia.

  • Dr. Evil

Im a member of the developers program and have legal access to the 4.2b3 firmware but i had to have my iphone replaced and as a result it has 4.2.1 with no blobs saved so neither the 4.2b3 method or the 4.1 blob method is gonna help me and it wont help anyone of the millions of people who have bought an iphone since apple stopped signing 4.1 and 4.2b3 firmware. Their has to be a better solution.. Come on Geohot your our only hope… I can only assume that it would be in the best interest of the cydia community to have as many phones as possible jailbroken so i dont see why their waisting all this time and energy on a jailbreak method that only helps a limited number of people. why dont they find a real untether solution that works for everyone.

    • Burge

Wait for greenpoison that will help you , jailbreak 4.2.1 no blobs

  • Mena

I don’t believe the information provided in the article is fully correct. Being keen to jailbreak, I did a lot of reading since Sunday and it appears that Monte will fetch the required 4.1 file for you (Apple is still actively distributing the required 4.1 files). This mean it doesn’t matter if you just got your iPhone and never had the chance to safe any previous blobs or other files.

    • Dr. Evil

Some of the post i’ve read have hinted blobs wont be needed as well but as far the tweet below from musclenerd as well as the tweet posted in this article above both indicate that blobs will be needed. Dont get me wrong, I truly hope your right… but from what i can tell, it appears that his motivation from doing the port to 4.1 blobs is solely to prevent accusations of piracy or legal threats from Apple over the use of 4.2b3 firmware to make it work..

@musclenerd-“Turns out the 4.1-blob version of Monte wasn’t so hard :)”

    • Kickstar13

Actually, that’s incorrect. Jailbreak Monte wont get any of your “files”, it will simply let you use your iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs to get an untethered jailbreak on 4.2.1. The main concern previously with Jailbreak Monte was the 4.2b3 IPSW was only (legally) available to Apple developer accounts so many people decided to pirate the 4.2b3 IPSW (which the iPhone Dev Team was strongly against). Now there will not be ant piracy concerns as the 4.1 IPSW is (legally) available to all users.

      • Mena

Oh okay, that would be a shame. I was basing it on this reply:

MuscleNerd @ryankennell redsn0w gets that SHSH for you 🙂
3 days ago in reply to ryankennell

  • nick

I agree with Dr.Evil this is getting ridiculous.

  • Dr. Evil

Yea i seen the tweet from musclenerd and it caught my attention too “MuscleNerd @ryankennell redsn0w gets that SHSH for you”

But that was in reply to “@MuscleNerd now i just need my 4.1 SHSH extracted from my i4 on 4.1 :D”

So basically musclenerd was just telling him that he wouldnt have to manually extract em but that redsnow would fetch the blobs from cydias server

Very Important Question: My father has recently bought new iphone3GS. It came with iOS4.2.1 So now its obvious that he wont have his SHSH blob saved anywhere. What can be the solution for them who have recently bought new iphone? In my case, my father’s iphone is factory unlocked, so he just wants to jailbreak his phone. Any solution? I am sure Seb can help me.

    • Dr. Evil

As far as saving blobs you can download tiny umbrella and it will save the blobs for 4.2.1 (it doesn’t have to be jailbroken to save the blobs) but the only jailbreak solution for right now for that phone if it’s running 4.2.1 is a tethered jailbreak using redsnow 0.9.6

  • bonneville1992

to damn complicated for me, i wish it would have the one button limeraim didljust to many steps ect… i’m just not that savey, adult aDHD i think. but i have to give everyone credit for being able to figure all this stuff out.
