Beware! Fake Apple Billing Information Emails Circulating

When you are as big as Apple, bad guys will always seek to use you as a means to take people's money, and unfortunately there is a new scam making the rounds.

According to The Mac Security Blog, the latest method of stealing people's money comes courtesy of fake emails which purport to be from the iPhone maker, claiming that the user's billing information is out of date. Obviously, the "helpful" email offers a link that gives the lucky recipient an easy way to make things right.

Of course, that link doesn't take you to Apple's billing pages, but rather a third party who wishes to steal your information...

Warning: MobileMe Phishing Scam Poses Security Risk Via Email

It may be nearly Christmas, but that isn't stopping the bad guys from trying to rip us all off, and the latest victim is Apple's MobileMe service.

The phishing method is a familiar one – send an email to a few thousand people, ask them for their login credentials and hope that some fall for it. It's low-tech, but it unfortunately works more often than you would think.

As The Mac Observer writes, customers of Apple's MobileMe service are the latest to receive such phishing emails, with recipients being warned that their iDisks have been found to contain a virus. The way to get rid? Email off your login details, obviously...

iOS 5.1 Beta Will Expire on January 14th

A word of caution to those of you who will be downloading and installing the new iOS 5.1 beta that Apple seeded earlier today.

According to jailbreak hacker iH8Sn0w, iOS 5.1 beta will expire on January 14th, 2012 at 8PM EST. This means that you have to update to a newer beta version or the official firmware before that time, or else your device will be unusable until you restore...

Warning: Skype for iOS Has a Vulnerability that Allows Hackers to Steal Your Data

If you're using Skype for iOS version 3.0.1 or older, you might want to think twice before opening messages from people you don't know. According to a security expert, a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability exists in the Chat section of Skype for iOS on both the iPhone and iPod touch.

Apparently, Skype fails to properly encode the "full name" of the sender of an incoming chat message, allowing the sender to add malicious JavaScript code that can be executed as the message is opened...

Apple Cracking Down on Non-Developer iOS 5 Users

Apple opened up iOS 5 Beta 1 to developers earlier this summer, and since then, there have been 3 updates. Given the nature of human curiosity, you can guess that it hasn't just been developers taking the new firmware for a test drive.

There's a few ways for non-developers to acquire a copy of iOS 5, but the most popular method of late has been by purchasing a UDID slot from a person or business with an Apple developer account. It looks like those days may soon be over...

Warning: Don’t Update to iOS 4.3.5 if You Care About Your Jailbreak

With the release of iOS 4.3.5 and 4.3.10 earlier today, I think it would be safe to remind you to stay away from the "update" button if you care about your jailbreak or unlock.

If you run a stock iPhone or iPad then go ahead and update to the latest firmware. But if, like most iDB readers, you heavily rely on a jailbreak/unlock, make sure you do not update...

iOS 5 Beta 3 Set to Expire on August 18

If you updated your iPhone, iPad, iPod or Apple TV to the latest iOS 5 Beta 3 release, you need to know that, according to iH8Sn0w, it will expire on August 18, 2011 at 8pm EST.

So what will happen at that time? Well, your iPhone might explode, your iPad will implode, and your Apple TV will fly back to its original factory in China. More seriously, I'd assume that it wouldn't let you use your device until it's updated to a newer beta or maybe even the official firmware...

Germany Issues Warning Concerning Comex’s iOS PDF Exploit

JailbreakMe 3.0 has garnered some serious attention over the last 48 hours. The last report we heard was that the site had been visited over a million times, and the PDF exploit had been downloaded over 500,000 times.

The exploit must have also grabbed the attention of Germany's Information Security team, because the group just issued a country-wide warning for all iOS products. The Mobile Safari vulnerability exposed by Comex in his new jailbreak tool has really made some folks nervous...

iOS 5 Beta Set to Expire August 4th

If you are currently running the beta build of iOS 5 on any of your iDevices, you might want to read this. That goes double for folks using the firmware that don't have an Apple developer's account.

Known jailbreak developer iH8sn0w warned the Twitter nation yesterday that the iOS 5 Beta 1 has an expiration date. Once expired, the firmware will lock you out of your device until it's downgraded or iOS 5 officially launches...

Warning: New Facebook Scam Wants You to Believe in the iPhone 5

There is a new scam going on on Facebook right now, which involves you, your friends, and the yet to be released iPhone 5. Here is how it works. You see in your stream that one of your friends commented on an article titled "First Exposure: Apple iPhone 5." Because your friend commented on it and because you really want to know about this iPhone 5, you click on the link as well.

You are then directed to a domain ending in .info (that should be a bad sign in itself), where you are asked to enter a captcha code to prove you are human. That should really be a second warning that this is not so legit...

iOS 4.3.3 is Out – What Now?

Apple just released iOS 4.3.3 and as usual when a new firmware is out, we try to make sure we warn you about the potential risks. Experienced iPhone users might want to skip this post, but if you're new to the iPhone and especially jailbreaking, read on.

If your iPhone is jailbroken/unlocked, the first thing to do is to make sure you do not update to iOS 4.3.3. Updating will supercede your jailbreak, rendering it useless. As always when Apple releases an update to the software, make sure you hold on until new jailbreak/unlock is available...
