watch screen

The iPhone 6, before it launched, was expected to feature an ultra-durable sapphire screen. So everyone wanted to get their hands on the material and put it through the ringer, to see how it would hold up in both every-day and not-so-every-day usage.

Well the Apple Watch, set to launch later this month, actually does have a sapphire screen, so naturally people are going to want to put it to the test too. In fact, the folks over at iPhonefixed already have, and they’ve uploaded a video of the torture session.

Unfortunately, restrictions on the video are preventing us from embedding it in this post, but you can check it out here. Spoiler alert, the screen is pretty impressive, withstanding key swipes, a hammer and a power drill without incurring any noticeable scratches.

The Apple Watch goes up for pre-order tomorrow at 12:01am Pacific Time. If you plan on getting one, be sure to check out our post on how to be best prepared for when pre-orders go live.

Exactly why i’m getting the stainless steel version 🙂

    • johnsm

because you will try to hammer and drill your screen?

      • Fanboy 

Because it will be scratch resistant to anything I knick it against

      • @dongiuj

Stainless steel isn’t scratch resistant. It will scratch over time.

Anywhere else this is posted? I can’t get the video to play past 10 seconds.

      just embedded a YouTube version

        Thank you

Sapphire glass on a watch makes sense as its attached to your body but for phones they should stick with gorilla glass. Sapphire is trash against drops which is a bigger worry than scratches for phones.

  • misterz

Nice screen. Those are some pretty light hammer hits. The guy definitely does not want to find the breaking point.

    • Eni

He is trying the scrach test not the break test

  • Jamessmooth

Thank goodness, this is what I expected. NOW let’s see how that ion-x glass holds up.

  • Jon20

I’m sure someone will create tempered glass screen protectors for these watches.

This is nothing new. My 10 year old Seiko watch has a Sapphire screen as well. Most decent watches do.

  • artwilbur

Those are some pretty dang weak hammer taps…

  • artwilbur

But how scratch resistant is the actual metal?

  • iPhoneWINS

    mi iphone 6+ cannot take a feather…lol

*Apple Watch Sport does NOT have sapphire display!

  • Techsticles

Apple has ruined the fun of buying their tech. Now they unveil the product, then have preorders a week or so later. Then you have to stand in line for an hour at UPS on a Friday night if there are delivey issues and you want your new shiny toy on the weekend.

The original video is a joke. The guy doesn’t know how to keep his hands to himself, gentle tests and no reflection from the glass to see the scratches, he also says that ion-x is more durable than sapphire, and that dancing at the end… facepalm
p.s. Pretty excited for my 28mm Sports Black Watch though
