Apple’s AirPods Pro sent a shockwave through the earbud industry when they became some of the first wireless earbuds to support active noise cancellation. Fast-forward to today, and even Apple’s newer AirPods Max over-ear headphones support this feature along with transparency.
But Apple isn’t the only brand pumping out earbuds and headphones with active noise cancellation and features similar to that of the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max. Sadly, the company limits iOS’ native controls to the first party audio consumption devices — requiring the use of third party apps to control third party accessories (eww).
Sonyfy is a new and free jailbreak tweak by iOS developer Sem Visscher that attempts to fix this, at least for Sony-branded headphones that support noise cancellation. It does this by adding support for toggling noise cancellation mode on or off for compatible Sony headphones to the Control Center interface just as you’d expect from AirPods Pro or AirPods Max.
According to the developer, Sonyfy currently supports Sony Headphones such ad the WH-1000XM3, WH-1000XM4, and WH-H910N. It may also support other unlisted headphones by Sony, but those haven’t been officially tested to know for sure.
With the Sonyfy tweak installed, switching noise cancellation mode on or off for any of the above Sony-branded headphone models is just as easy as doing the same for Apple’s AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, which means a serious upgrade for accessibility and the user experience.
It’s unfortunate that Apple doesn’t offer out-of-the-box support for at least some of the market’s best noise cancellation-supporting headphones or an API for headphone manufacturers to tie into for a flush user experience. Sadly, Apple views this as a way to make its own products stand out as superior on its own platform, which is something the company is particularly known for doing (just ask Tile).
Those interested in giving the Sonyfy tweak a try can download it for free from the Packix repository via their favorite package manager app. The tweak supports jailbroken installations of iOS & iPadOS 12, 13, and 14 devices and is open source on the developer’s GitHub page. Please note that the tweak is only intended for Sony-branded headphones.
