  • The unreleased feature is still in the early stages of development.
  • Moving data between platforms is currently unsupported by WhatsApp.

Easier WhatsApp switching between platforms

That’s per WABetaInfo, which tracks unreleased features in beta versions of WhatsApp for iOS and Android. While this is no guarantee that the company will launch any feature that’s currently being tested, it’s a pretty good indicator of what’s to come down the pike.

The app currently does not support moving data between iOS and Android.

So, when will you be able to enjoy this new feature? According to the publication, this is something that is currently in the early stages of development. In other words, it’s unclear whether this feature might arrive with the next WhatsApp update or a future one.

Currently, users can transfer their WhatsApp chats and other data to a new phone by restoring their WhatsApp back-up from Google Drive or a local backup. On iOS, WhatsApp backs up data via iCloud which makes moving your data between your old and new iPhone a breeze (the company is also working on password protection for your WhatsApp backups in iCloud).

The Google Drive method is used on Android. To successfully restore a Google Drive backup, however, you need to use the same phone number and Google account used to create the backup. A new method the company is testing should make it a cinch to move WhatsApp data freely between the iPhone and Android devices without having to start from scratch.
