Apple may be developing its own health hardware products

One might be able to argue that Apple is already developing its own health hardware products, with the Apple Watch leading the way. However, there’s room to expand, and the company may be ready to narrow its focus even more.

There’s no doubt that the Apple Watch, while being a smartwatch, is also a health product. But according to a job listing discovered by MyHealthyApple, Apple is looking to develop its own health hardware products. The job listing shows that Apple is looking to bring on a Senior Engineering Project Manager, who would join Apple’s Health Hardware group. That’s part of Apple’s Health Technologies division. Both groups have worked on Apple’s other health-related products, including hardware and software.

The job listing actually says Apple is developing its own health hardware products. That would appear to be separate from the Apple Watch. And this job appears to show that Apple is ready to start developing its own products, rather than simply acquire other products (like the Beddit sleep tracker).

Apple Watch Excercise Goal

Here’s how Apple describes the role, specific to this job listing:

Apple Health Hardware EPMs are responsible for building and communicating project definition, development milestones, project schedules, validation/FA/CA, and project status in the development of new products. An EPM should be able to prioritize issues and track the details as well as be in touch with the big-picture issues.

EPMs are fearless organizers who are ready to work with the highly skilled Hardware, Software, Mechanical Design and Industrial Design teams to identify and resolve potential risks to the schedule and quality of the product. The EPM will interact with these engineering design disciplines plus Safety, Reliability, Marketing, Packaging, Manufacturing, Component Engineering, and other resources inside and outside Apple.

The EPM is also the key interface to the suppliers, driving build readiness at the factory and managing the build itself. Success is defined in terms of the quality and timeliness of the pre- production builds and the start of mass production.

The job listing also seems to suggest that Apple’s already well down the line of development for whatever these products are. Of course, there’s no word when these things might actually see the light of day. But the fact that Apple is going down this route certainly makes sense. Health and fitness is a major focal point for the company and has been for quite some time.

It will be interesting to see what these devices are, though. Maybe it will tie into Apple Fitness+ in some way?
