Starscape: A curious new aesthetic for banner notifications on jailbroken handsets

Banner notifications are a critical component of the notification system found on iPhones, iPod touches, and iPads. Whenever you miss a notification, regardless of which app it’s coming from, the operating system displays a banner to keep you in the loop of what’s going on.

Like many things in Apple’s fully integrated software ecosystem, banner notifications aren’t aesthetically customizable. With that in mind, it’s easy to see why banner notifications are often the topic of interest with respect to jailbreak tweaks.

Starscape by iOS developer bedtime is one of the latest of such banner-centric tweak releases, and it can be installed by jailbreakers to achieve a new and bold banner notification aesthetic that looks impressive regardless of whether you’re accustomed to using Dark Mode or Light Mode.

In the screenshot examples above and below, you’ll notice that Starscape provides a bold new appearance for notification banners, complete with a squarer interface and a mysterious drop shadow to captivate your eyes’ interest.

With Dark Mode enabled, Starscape makes the banner notifications appear a dark gray; conversely, Light Mode makes the same banner notifications appear white, albeit with a similar command of design.

The new aesthetics have a somewhat polarizing look and feel over iOS’ (and iPadOS’) native notification banner appearance, but I will say that I find reading text via the new banners to be easier on my eyes, likely because of the starker color contrast.

Starscape doesn’t come with any options to configure, and so what you see is essentially what you get. For those who like what they see, Starscape can be had for free from the developer’s repository via any package manager. The tweak supports jailbroken iOS 13 devices.

If you don’t like what we see, well… better luck next time.

Those who aren’t already using bedtime’s repostiory can add it to their package manager of choice via the following URL:
