Jailbreakers can get festive with Snoverlay 2, which adds animated snowflakes to any interface

The most wonderful time of the year is rapidly approaching once more, and lots of families will be turning to festivities as a means of drowning out the absolute horrors that 2020 brought to families all over the globe.

If you’re one of the millions who will be celebrating the holidays this year, then why stop at household decorations and holiday baking when you can trick out your iPhone or iPad too? Apart from setting a festive wallpaper, a newly released and free jailbreak tweak called Snoverlay 2 by iOS developer Ryan Nair can make animated snowflakes rain over the top of every interface you view on your handset.

If the tweak’s name wasn’t already self-evident enough, we’ll just go ahead and say that this is the second iteration of the original Snoverlay tweak released back in 2017, although this version brings compatibility for all the latest operating systems and device types.

In the screenshot examples above, you’ll see that the tweak can display snowflakes over not only the Home Screen, but also over the top of application interfaces. The latter is optional, however, since some users may find this to be a bit excessive, if not distracting. Fortunately, the option is still there for those who like to go all out during this time of the year.

Below, you’ll find an animated GIF that depicts what the snowflake animations look like:

Once installed, users will also find a dedicated preference pane in the Settings app where they can configure a few options to their liking:

Here, you will be able to:

  • Toggle Snoverlay 2 on or off on demand
  • Enable wallpaper-only mode (Home Screen and Lock Screen only)
  • Configure how many snowflakes appear at any given time via a slider
  • Enable snowfall rotation to match the device’s orientation (landscape or portrait)
  • Choose between white or blue-colored snowflakes

Snoverlay 2 is light on system resources and appears to be a lot more configurable than its predecessor. Those interested in giving the tweak a try can download it for free from the Havoc repository via their package manager of choice. Snoverlay 2 will work with all jailbroken iOS 7 through 14 devices and is open source on the developer’s GitHub page for anyone who wants to learn more about how it works.
