Select Roku streaming devices now being updated to support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit

Back in September, it was confirmed that some Roku-branded streaming devices would be getting an update to support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit. Now, more than a month later, that update is finally rolling out.

Today, Roku officially announced that it has begun rolling out the update for select Roku streaming devices. With this new software, which bumps up the version number to Roku OS 9.4, both AirPlay 2 and HomeKit are supported. Here’s the list of supported streaming devices, according to Roku’s announcement:

  • Roku Ultra
  • Roku Streambar
  • Roku Smart Soundbar
  • Roku Streaming Stick+
  • Roku Premiere

And, in the coming days, Roku says that supported 4K Roku TV models that update to OS 9.4 will also support AirPlay 2 and HomeKit.

With regular automatic software updates, the Roku OS enables consumers to easily get to the entertainment they want via the new features we add over time,” said Ilya Asnis, senior vice president of Roku OS at Roku. “With Roku OS 9.4 now available on streaming players, we are adding all-new ways to navigate and control content-rich experiences on Roku devices as well as ensuring Roku devices provide a great entertainment experience for customers, regardless of what other technology products they prefer in their homes and particularly with the addition of Apple AirPlay and HomeKit.

With AirPlay 2 support, customers will be able to stream content directly to the device from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac. With HomeKit support, customers will be able to use either Siri or the Home app to control things like the volume on their TV, power the device on or off, change the source, and more.

The update should be available for all supported streaming devices from Roku in the coming days.
