Dish will discontinue Slingbox services, apps and hardware support in 2022

Dish Network subsidiary Sling Media has confirmed plans to permanently discontinue its Slingbox services, apps and hardware support in two years. As a result of this unpopular decision, every last Slingbox from the company will become a brick in 2022.

The Slingbox servers will go offline around November 9, 2022. Dish has said that at that point all Slingbox devices and services will become inoperable. In the meantime, Slingboxes will continue to work, but the number of supported devices “will steadily decrease as versions of the SlingPlayer apps become outdated and/or lose compatibility.”

Slingbox allows the user to beam their own TV over the Internet. According to the company, they’re shutting down Slingbox in order to “make room for new innovative products.” Curiously, Sling’s own FAQ states that Slingbox won’t be releasing any new products, as evidenced by the screenshot embedded ahead.

Sling TV, an over-the-top streaming platform owned and operated by by Dish Network, is unaffected by this move and will continue to exist.
