Clips 3.0 brings multiple aspect ratios, HDR recording with iPhone 12 and more

Apple today announced Clips 3.0, a major new version of its video creation app for the social age, with features like HDR recording on the latest iPhones, an overhauled interface, support for both landscape and portrait orientations and much more.

Clips 3.0 brings a streamlined interface across the iPhone and iPad. On the iPhone, you get full-screen browsers that simplify the process of recording and adding effects to your videos. On iPad, Clips supports landscape orientation, Scribble with Apple Pencil and the use of a Bluetooth mouse or trackpad (including the Magic Keyboard and the Smart Keyboard).

Portrait videos popularized on social media can now be created with ease in Clips. In fact, you can make videos in multiple aspect ratios, including horizontal and vertical (Apple has updated all filters, posters, Live Titles and Selfie Scenes to record in these new sizes).

And if you have an iPhone 12, you can use record and share HDR videos as Dolby Vision files that have more vibrant colors and contrast. “Clips users can record HDR footage directly into their project and add more HDR photos and videos from their Photos library,” says Apple.

Speaking of sharing, the new export options allow you to share content in any supported size. The share sheet in Clips even shows a video preview before sending, a really nice touch.

Clips 3.0 is a free download from the App Store.
