HomePod’s new Intercom feature shown in action on an Apple Watch

The HomePod mini debuted Intercom, Apple’s new feature letting you send audio message from one speaker to another. It’s also available on the full-size HomePod with the HomePod software 14.1. Here’s how Intercom works between the HomePod and the Apple Watch.

With Intercom, you can ask Siri on HomePod to make announcements to other HomePod speakers throughout your home. You can send an audio message to all HomePod speakers in your home or to a HomePod in a specific room or zone. After a HomePod plays an Intercom message, you can reply back.

How to use HomePod as an intercom

Domenico Panacea shared an animation on Twitter showing sending and receiving Intercom audio between their HomePod and Apple Watch running the latest beta software.

Here’s how Apple describes Intercom:

A new Intercom feature offers a quick and easy way for family members to connect with each other at home. One person can send an Intercom message from one HomePod to another — whether in a different room, a specific zone or multiple rooms throughout the home — and their voice will automatically play on the designated HomePod speaker. Intercom works with iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods and CarPlay, so everyone in the household can get Intercom notifications and send Intercom messages from the backyard or on their way home.

Intercom for the iPhone and iPod touch requires iOS 14.2. Intercom for iPad requires iPadOS 14.2. Intercom for Apple Watch requires watchOS 7.1.

CarPlay support for Intercom is coming in the future.
