Apple introduced the notch with the iPhone X and it’s all-screen design. Ever since, the rumor mill has been pretty consistent that Apple plans on shrinking that notch until it’s gone completely. And it may finally be getting smaller next year.
According to serial leaker Ice universe (@universeice), Apple plans on keeping the notch around for next year’s iPhone lineup. However, the company will reportedly make the notch “shorter” compared to the current version of the design. And that’s all we have to go on, because the tweet doesn’t include any additional information:

Well, that’s not exactly the case, because Ice universe did follow up with a . . . sketch of what a shorter notch would look like between the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13:

A shorter notch in the iPhone 13 suggests the future iPhone’s notch will have the same width. But if it doesn’t cut as far into the display, that may be an okay design to live with until the notch is gone completely.
Now, keep in mind that the rumors swirled around for months that Apple was going to shrink the notch in the iPhone 12 lineup, too. However, with less than a week to go before Apple unveils its next iPhone lineup, that’s probably not going to be the case. And yet, maybe we will see a smaller notch in the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, reportedly set to be marketed as the iPhone 12 mini. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said the smallest iPhone 12 may have a smaller notch, a “narrower” notch.
