The firmware of your Beats products like wireless headphones, earphones and speakers now updates over the air rather than requiring the Beats Updater app for Mac or Windows PCs.
The Beats Updater tool remains available to download from the Beats website, but MacRumors notes that it’s been discontinued in favor of over-the-air firmware updates.
Beats Updater allows users to plug their Beats product directly into the USB port of their computer to check for firmware updates online, but with Apple’s growing tendency to deliver over-the-air updates to wireless products via iOS and iPadOS, the company clearly feels the utility has reached the end of its life.
According to Apple’s freshly refreshed support document, customers only need to pair their Beats device with their iPhone or iPad to have its software updated automatically. Over-the-air firmware updating is supported for the Powerbeats, Powerbeats Pro, Powerbeats3 Wireless, Solo Pro, Beats Solo3 Wireless, Beats Studio3 Wireless and BeatsX products.
“If you paired your Beats with an Android device, download the Beats app for Android from the Google Play store to update your firmware,” reads the support document. Apple acknowledges Beats Updater is officially retired, confirming no new versions will be available.
Requiring macOS 10.14+ or Windows 10 (1607) or later, the Beats Updater app allows you to rename your Beats product, install the latest firmware update by connecting the device to your computer with the cable that came with it, get product information and more.
