LG changes tune, now claims AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support will come to select 2018 TVs

LG has apparently changed its mind as the South Korean company is now claiming that it will be enabling AirPlay 2 and HomeKit compatibility on its older TVs.

Despite previously promising to release software updates bringing support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to older TVs, LG last week wrote on Twitter that it actually won’t be bringing those Apple features to its select Smart TV models manufactured in 2018.

But Monday, LG UK via the same Twitter account it uses for corporate communications said that AirPlay‌ 2 and ‌HomeKit‌ will be coming to its pre-2019 TVs after all.

In addition to this, select 2018 LG TVs now support Apple’s TV app, the company has revealed. “Customers worldwide can now enjoy the Apple TV app on LG 2018 OLED and Super UHD TVs, with UHD TV models to follow,” reads the company’s tweet on the matter. “LG’s 2018 TVs will add support for Apple ‌AirPlay‌ 2 and ‌HomeKit‌ later this year,” the tweet continues.

The company has promised to shared more details when the features become available.

As MacRumors noted, LG has deleted the original tweet claiming it cancelled plans to bring the features to older TVs. The fact that the original tweet was followed by complaints from disgruntled owners of 2018 TV sets may have forced the company to change its stance.

That said, folks with a 2018 TV set like LG’s SK and UK models, as well as the B8 through Z8 OLED models, will be getting support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit late this year after all.

LG in April 2020 reiterated its earlier assurance to bring software support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to its select TVs manufactured in 2018. Support for Apple’s features was originally promised to arrive via a software update that was supposed to arrive by October of this year.
