Google Docs, Sheets and Slides are getting Dark Mode support and other new features

Google yesterday announced a set of changes and new features that are coming to or are already available in its mobile word processor Docs, spreadsheet app Sheets and presentation software Slides, including support for the system-wide Dark Mode on the iPhone and iPad.

According to the announcement, Dark Mode support in Docs, Sheets and Slides is available as of today on Android, but iOS customers will be getting it “in the coming months.”

The Slides app brings a vertically scrollable slide view that you can make bigger or smaller by pinching, making it faster to review slides. It’s coming to iOS in the coming months as well.

The Docs app now supports the same link previews as Google Docs on the web. Instead of taking you to an external browser, tapping a link within a document in the mobile Docs app now opens an info card showing you things like the owner and latest activity for Drive files, or titles and descriptions of public links, along with a visual thumbnail.

That feature is already available on iOS.

Moreover, the AI-powered Smart Compose feature will be rolling out to G Suite customers over the next few weeks, on both Android and iOS, as will the ability to edit Microsoft Office files which launched last year launched on the web.

The user interface for comments and action items in Docs, Sheets and Slides on mobile will be receiving a makeover on iOS in the coming months, the search company said:

With a larger, clearer commenting interface that makes it easier to scroll through and respond to comments and a quick access button to reply and @mention others, having a focused discussion with comments will be even easier.

Responding to comments directly from Gmail is coming, too:

Last year, we introduced dynamic email on the web, which makes it easier to take actions (like responding to comments) right from a Gmail message. Instead of receiving individual email notifications when you’re mentioned in a comment in Docs, Sheets or Slides, you’ll now see an up-to-date comment thread in Gmail, and you’ll be able to reply or resolve the comment, directly within the message.

And last but not least, they’ve extended dynamic email to the Gmail apps on iOS and Android.

Google Sheets, Docs and Slides are available free in the App Store.
