‘Defending Jacob’ creator and showrunner says a second season of the hit series isn’t impossible

Apple TV+ has a lot of high-profile series, put together with amazing creators both in front and behind the camera. Defending Jacob is one such series, and it has become one of the most popular options on Apple’s streaming service. Unfortunately, it’s just a limited series with a single season.

Or is it! Well, yes, it is, for now, but that could change at some point in the future. In a new interview between Variety and the cast and crew of Defending Jacob, a variety of topics are covered. That includes how it was filming the series as a whole, and how great it was to have an actor like J.K. Simmons around. The interview includes showrunner and creator Mark Bomback, star and executive producer Chris Evans (who has won a Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Award!), stars Michell Dockery and Jaeden Martell, and others.

The interview is absolutely worth a watch/read, especially if you enjoyed Defending Jacob. But, as someone who enjoyed the limited series quite a bit, the hint that a second season may actually be a possibility after all certainly caught my attention. There’s nothing definitive, of course, but it certainly feels like the stars are starting to align on the prospect.

When the topic of a second season was brought up, Bomback says from the outset to “never say never”, and that if the right idea were to strike him, “I would be lying if I said I don’t think about it”. Now, this doesn’t mean that Apple is even considering something like this, or that the “right idea” is out there, right now. But that could change in the future, and Apple may have already started laying the groundwork towards this future result.

Reason being, Bomback just this week signed a major, multi-year overall deal with Apple to developer new and exclusive TV series for Apple TV+. At the time of that story’s publication there wasn’t any information regarding what projects Bomback might be working on, and that will probably remain the case for quite some time. However, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that Bomback has plenty of latitude to work on projects, so if he does come up with something to build a second season on, we might actually get it.

Plus, with how popular Defending Jacob has become for Apple TV+, with all signs pointing to it being one of the most-watched series on the platform, it’s hard to see Apple turning down a second season — as long as all the creative folks involved with the first season are involved with the second.

Did you check out the first season of Defending Jacob? If so, what did you think? Would you be interested in a second season?
