Epic Games CEO wants to bring the Epic Games Store to iOS

The Epic Games Store has become a major disrupting force in the gaming industry, taking the popular Steam marketplace head on. To that end, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has ambitious goals for the market.

GameSpot has the report this week (via AppleInsider). In an interview with the publication, Sweeney spoke about his goals for the Epic Games Store, which includes support for mobile operating systems. Yes, at some point Epic Games Store customers will be able to have their digital library on them at all times. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when the Epic Games Store will make its iOS and Android debut.

Sweeney sees the availability of the Epic Games Store on mobile platforms as another way to push the digital storefront forward.

We’d like to bring the [Epic Games] Store to iOS in the future, and we will bring it to Android,” Sweeney said. “We think it’s a good way to help the industry [move] forward and it’s another way where Epic as a game developer had built up this audience around Fortnite and learned how to operate a distribution platform on PC and Android.

“Now, as we’ve done with many things from the Unreal Engine to the Epic Online services, we open it up to all other developers to use with their games and are trying to serve the industry and provide a really interesting alternative to the ecosystem.

This is something that Sweeney has wanted to happen for a bit of time already. The original report says that the company originally planned to debut the Epic Games Store for iOS and Android sometime in 2019. That obviously did not pan out, but the push to make that a reality continues. It’s certainly possible that 2020 is the year it happens, but Sweeney isn’t making any official announcements just yet.

Of course, the question of whether or not this is possible in any meaningful way looms large, at least when it comes to Apple’s App Store. The company is notoriously strict regarding third-party app stores, so the fact that Sweeney wants to launch a large one like the Epic Games Store might not go over so well. Still, it would be nice to see the digital storefront available on Apple’s mobile devices.

What do you think? Will we see the Epic Games Store launch on iOS at any point in the future? Let us know in the comments.
