Spotify’s web player is working in Safari again

Spotify today brought back support for Apple’s Safari browser to its web-based player.

Eagle-eyed readers will remember the Swedish company removed Safari support from the web player more than two years ago, back in September 2017, supposedly because the Apple browser was incompatible with the Widevine Digital Rights Management that Spotify uses.

A support page on Spotify’s website acknowledges the change as Safari is now included on the official list of supported web browsers: Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera.

Attempting to access the web player via Safari used to yield a message saying, “This browser doesn’t support Spotify Web Player. Switch browsers or download Spotify for your desktop.”

Launched in November 2012, the Spotify web player permits people to access and stream their cloud music through any HTML5-compliant browser. The web player looks a lot like its desktop counterparts on Mac and Windows, but it only includes a basic feature set.

Have you used Spotify’s web player yet? If so, what did you think of it?
