Apple pulls NextVR for Android from Google Play following acquisition

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman yesterday alleged that Apple has acquired a virtual-reality startup, called NextVR, and within hours its Android app was pulled from the Play Store.

The move has basically corroborated the Bloomberg write-up.

First noted by Gurman itself on Twitter, the Play Store link for the Android edition of the NextVR app is no longer live, and it’s nowhere to be seen in Play Store’s search either.

NextVR has built itself up relying on virtual reality to broadcasting sports and entertainment events, music concerts and general entertainment experiences. The startup has apps for iPhone and iPad, PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift and Steam, all of which continue to be available.

The company’s website has been pulled as well, replaced with a simple banner on the landing page acting as a thank-you message to its partners and fans around the world.

Apple’s confirmed the deal with its standard statement, saying “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”
