Apple Music’s Beats 1 station hosts like DJs Zane Lowe, Ebro Darden and Julie Adenuga today began broadcasting from their homes, using FaceTime to interview musicians.
Staying home and working from home are the new normals during the coronavirus pandemic, and now Beats 1 radio DJs have joined the trend. They’re using Apple technologies and their iPhones to stream their Beats 1 shows from home, like FaceTime for conducting interviews with popular musicians like Elton John and Hayley Williams.

It’s not clear whether or not the anchors will use iPhones to record the non-interview sections of their shows, but it would be surprising if they opted for smartphones over more professional audio equipment such as condenser microphones and preamps. However, exclusive programs from Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig and more will indeed be recorded on their iPhones.
Engadget enthuses over the fact that Internet radio personalities are able to broadcast from home, but that doesn’t come as a surprise to me at all because they’re definitely doing so with a little help of high-end audio gear and professional home studio setups.

It’s like Hollywood still faking video calling in movies even though underlying technologies have been in place for at least 20 years, but still you rarely see a movie character using FaceTime or Skype on their iPhone (unless it’s an Apple show, of course).
