Netflix will help you discover the most popular content with new ‘top 10’ lists

Netflix has become one of the strongest subscription services out there, providing access to hundreds of hours of content for a relatively low monthly sum.

But, the other side of that same coin is the fact that there is a lot of content on Netflix — even as it regularly cycles old shows and/or movies out on a semi-regular basis. And while the library is shrinking due to additional streaming services launching and reclaiming their content, Netflix still has an exhaustive library.

Which means finding something worth watching — even something that’s being praised on social media or by word of mouth — can be pretty daunting. To help with that, Netflix has confirmed to TechCrunch that it will be launching a new “top 10” list for users. The lists will show what’s popular in film and TV, and they will be updated on a daily basis in each country where Netflix is available.

If you open Netflix, you’ll find a top 10 list that will show the most popular films and/or TV shows across both platforms. However, if you open each individual section, the top 10 list will change to show either the top 10 films or the top 10 TV shows, respectively.

Furthermore, a film or TV series that earns a place on a top 10 list will earn itself a persistent badge that will be present on the content’s poster on the service.

However, in an interesting move, the top 10 list won’t have a dedicated spot on Netflix. Meaning, it won’t always be in the same area every time you open the Netflix app:

The Top 10 list will appear on your Netflix homescreen, but the list’s actual position will vary based on how relevant the shows and films are to you. For example, if you only watched documentaries and horror, a top 10 list filled with teen rom-com’s and comedies may not appear as high on the screen for you as it would for others.

One might think it a little comical that, in an effort to find the most popular content on the platform, Netflix might also make it slightly hard to find the new top 10 lists.

Here’s a Netflix spokesperson on the new top 10 lists:

When you watch a great movie or TV show, you share it with family and friends, or talk about it at work, so other people can enjoy it too. We hope these top 10 lists will help create more of these shared moments, while also helping all of us find something to watch more quickly and easily,” explained Netflix in a statement about the launch.

So, the new top 10 lists will start appearing across all of Netflix, across the globe, beginning today. What do you think? Is this a worthwhile new addition?
