AirTag could charge wirelessly like Apple Watch, should be “completely waterproof”

Apple's rumored Tile-like accessory discovered in iOS 13

Apple’s upcoming Tile-like tracking accessory, tentatively named “AirTag”, could feature wireless charging similar to your Apple Watch and be “completely waterproof”.

The pretty reliable blog Mac Otakara mentioned in today’s Japanese-language report that the alleged accessory could take advantage of magnetic wireless charging similar to inductive charging utilized on the Apple Watch. According to translation provided by MacRumors, the upcoming Tile-like object trackers from Apple will be “completely waterproof”.

It’s unclear whether the accessory might take advantage of an emerging near field communication standard, known as IEEE 802.11ay, that should appear in the next iPhone.

Code strings indicate that the tiny circular accessory could be paired with an iPhone like your AirPods or Apple Watch. The device is apparently designed for attaching to keys, wallets and more, permitting the user to track their items in the redesigned Find My app.

We first heard that Apple was planning to release a Tile-like tracking device back in April 2019.

This is an alleged setup process for AirTags

Kuo’s research note in January said the alleged accessory should take advantage of Ultra Wideband technology found in the iPhone 11 family with the custom U1 chip. According to a sketchy report, Apple could host a dedicated media event on March 31 to announce AirTags, a successor to the iPhone SE and, quite possibly, a few other products as well.

Although Apple may announce the product in March, it will most likely became available to purchase alongside new iPhones in the fall — reliable Apple inlays Ming-Chi Kuo last week predicted that AirTags production would ramp up in the second or third quarter of 2020.
