Samsung’s Oscars ad for the upcoming Z Flip foldable phone warns screen crease is normal

Samsung during last night’s Academy Awards ceremony aired an inaugural television commercial showing off its upcoming foldable phone, dubbed Z Flip. While people have speculated that the company may have solved the bending issue with foldable screens, the 30-second video ad notes in the fine print that display crease is normal.

The Z Flip takes advantage of new display technology which revolves around Samsung’s own thin cover glass that can be bent. But don’t expect miracles, because the fine print clearly spells out that the display crease issue continues to plague the current crop of foldables.

“You may notice a small crease in the center of the main screen, which is a natural characteristic of the screen,” reads the ad’s small print.

And now, watch the video ad for the Z Flip included right ahead.

The commercial invites the viewer to “change the shape of the future.”

Unfolded, the device features a 6.7-inch OLED panel. When folded up, the Z Flip smartphone takes advantage of its smallish screen located on the back which tells you who’s calling and provides controls for accepting or rejecting calls.

As for Samsung’s new take on foldable phones following the Galaxy Flip fiasco, the Galaxy Z Flip will be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S20 on February 11 in San Francisco.

That crease is totally unacceptable for a phone that will probably cost between $1,000 and $2,000. And if you ask me, folding smartphone displays are simply too unreliable for the time being and I don’t see that changing materially very soon.

How about you?
