Free DoubleTake app turns your iPhone into multi-cam studio

DoubleTake

Filmic captured a lot of iPhone users’ interest last fall when they gave a demonstration of their Filmic Pro app running on the new iPhone 11 Pro, for its ability to capture video simultaneously from multiple iPhone cameras. Now the company has released that functionality in a free app called DoubleTake, which is now available for download from the App Store. And it works with iPhone models besides the iPhone 11.

As noted by 9to5Mac, The version of Filmic Pro with multi-camera support is still in the works, but Filmic has elected to release the functionality in an entirely separate app that it’s calling DoubleTake, instead.

Filmic has released the app to showcase the new ability, according to the release notes:

DoubleTake gives you an early look at the multi-cam capability that will be coming to our award-winning cinema camera app FiLMiC Pro.

Filmic has outlined a number of potential uses for DoubleTake, both for professional filmmakers or just anyone who wants to take new and creative videos:

  • Camera visualization, so you can decide how to frame your shot and which cameras you’ll use.
  • Shot/reverse shot, great for recording interviews or shots between actors.
  • Multi-cam capture, to record video of the same subject using two different focal lengths.
  • PiP or Discreet, enabling you to see both capture feeds simultaneously through a Picture in Picture (PiP) window.
  • Split-screen, creating a 50/50 split-screen effect saved as a single video.
  • Lockable focus and exposure controls and a live histogram.

The app is able to be installed on any iOS device running iOS 13, but the multi-camera functionality is limited to iPhone 11 Pro Max, 11 Pro, 11, Xs Max, Xs, and Xr models (if you use the app on another iPhone, you’ll only be able to record video from a single camera).

You are able to select broadcast frame rates of 24, 25, and 30 frames per second. Video is recorded at 1080p, the maximum resolution supported by Apple’s multi-camera capture API.
